Zelda. IMO the king of game franchises.

Ok. I inadvertedly hijacked the Bed Bugs thread so I figured I'd start a new thread instead.

As the title states, to me, The Legend of Zelda is the king of Video game franchises.

No franchise has come out with as many killer, AAA, must have, can't miss titles.

It is the epitomy of fantasy action/adventure gaming.

From gameplay controls, to puzzle solving elements, to level design etc., no franchise has had as much "borrowed" from it then this one.

Ocarina remains the highest rated game of all time on gamerankings.com

So where are all the Zelda fans out there?

P.S. If anyone brings up the Phillips CD-i, they get a kick to the junk.

Zelda, Final Fantasy and Mario all rock.

I just bought a SNes on eBay so I can play FFIII, Mario World and A Link To the Past again.

The new Zelda: Wind Waker r0x0rz!

Super Mario 3 is king but I can't give Mario the prize because Mario Party sucks ass... unless high/drunk and even then it's only moderately entertaining.

Now I need to get a PSOne and FF7 again.

The series went downhill after that one in my humble opinion.

Although FF: Tactics was a refreshing change of pace.

Sonic the Hedgehog had a good run but has kind of disapeared.

I honestly don't know who I'd pick for best franchise. Tomb Raider?

I <3 FF7... 88 Hours spent... Knights of the Round rocked ;)

Cloud was strong enough with his 5 Counter Attacks to kill anyone I battled :p

Tomb Raider is stagnant......same gameplay....just using the T&A to sell copies.

The Mario games....(not the spinoffs like DK and the like) are still the best and each one just gets better and better.

Mario Bros
Mario 2
Mario 3
Mario 64
Mario Sunshine

It's Mario Kart, god damn it.

And Mario Kart Double Dash!!!!!!!111one1one is awesome.

Mario Sunshine was OK, but a bit disappointing.

Zelda:Wind Waker was a great game, but there were some aspects I was unhappy with. A couple of the quests seemed like "filler" material, and it could have used two more proper dungeons, more challenging gameplay and a little bit more creative endgame.

I know!

And those stupid Ultimate Weapons sucked my balls....I had to level up so much before taking on Emerald and all he got me was a Golden Chocobo!

I mean c'mon...I breeded one ages ago!

And I'd say a game that lead to a lot of others... spin off, etcwith the most success for sure...

Woflenstein... it's what shaped the way for my FPS IMO.

Agreed, but we are looking at it from a vetran's gamers perspective....to a little kid who's never played Zelda before this game could be quite difficult.

A harder final dungeon would have been nice though.

88 hours is NOTHING. I've probably spent at least a couple of thousand hours with the Quake series alone.

And over 100 hours so far (in less than a month) on Project Gotham 2.

And it's not the quantity of gameplay, but the quality that counts.

I love the Mario Series but in terms of pertage AAA hits, Zelda still rules supreme.

Not a single one of it's games was any less then a stellar hit (critically AND financially), and every one innovated something new beyond the previous one (be it in terms of gameplay, graphics, style etc).

Wind Waker did leave a bit to be desired. But that's when you compare it to the Zelda games before it because the bar has been risen so high.

Compare it to similar non-Zelda games, and it still shines above them (IMO).

Also I think Mario has been spread a little too thin amongst too many different games.

In regards to FF, IMO every 3 or so games is pretty much the same in terms of gameplay, style and whatnot.

Well, of course. Zelda hasn't had anywhere *near* the number of spinoffs that Mario has therefore it's logical that Mario would have a higher percentage of spinoff titles that don't do as well. But if you just look at the core series of games, the Mario titles are every bit as strong as Zelda's.

The original Super Mario is still the highest selling video game of all time. And if you want to talk numbers-wise, the Pokemon series is definitely way up there, especially with their Gameboy and Gameboy advance titles.
