Worry

I don't usually use tribe to deal with my anxieties, but this is different.

I haven't been able to get through to my parents in three days. This is unlike them, as they're not active, social people, so they're always home, but what's worse is that the phone just rings and rings and rings. So what happened to their answering machine? The answering machine is always on.

I emailed mom but no response, and she usually checks her email every day. I emailed my brother but no response. Just now I got the bright idea to call the high school (momsy's a teacher) but of course no one's answering at 5.

Has anybody heard if there are phone lines down up north? It makes the most sense, but we live right on the Trans Canada highway, in the past when phone lines went down they had em fixed in no longer than a day and a half.

i'm sure they got pelted by all the snow we've been having and the phone lines are down.

but if you're really worried, call the OPP and they should be able to send a car over to check.

If you're truly worried (I'm sure they're fine), simply call your neighbours and ask them to check up on them.

If you don't know their number, call the cop-shop - they WILL do this for you, especially if you raise concern that there may be a problem.

anyone else you can call in the area?

This thread had better have a happy ending.

It stands out as a sobering reminder of reality in the midst of the rest of the snarkiness.

DEE

don't worry hun. just relax and try the high school where your mum works in the morning

i'm sure everythings fine

SMILE and relax

:)

If there's a power outtage, the answering machine won't work, nor will they be able to use the phone if it's not a corded phone.

Could totally be that.

wait, i just re-read that and realized you wrote "three days" ... did they go away for a couple days and not tell you? or maybe you forgot they were going out of town? or maybe their phone isn't working.

you'll find out they're ok
and you'll all have a good laugh at whatever it was that made them inaccessible for a couple of days i'm sure

but make some calls and try and find out

1-888-310-1122, OPP.

They'll be able to help you out. Find out if the power is out in that area. If you can't come to a logical explanation, they'll send a car out (it's pretty routine stuff).

Yeah, I said "bright idea" to call the school cause I'm such an idiot foir not thinking of it before now--all last night I was trying to think if I have a single fuckign friend left that lives there full time to call. (I don't.)

I'm not panicking enough yet to call some random store--where'll they'll liekly know who I am but I won't know them.

I will breathe and relax nad go to the comedy show I had planned to tonight and in the morning I will call the school and my mom will be there and all will be well.

Then I get to yell at her for not warning me of whatever situation is affecting their phones.

Hey hun, I know how your feel. I'm a worry wort myself. When I was in Kingston, I couldn't get a hold of my mom for 3 days. I had a breakdown and my roommates had to calm me down. It turned out she went to Montreal for the weekend and totally forgot to tell me about it.

Please try not to worry yourself too much. I'm sure they should be fine :)

Oh, and for the record, my parents moved from Australia without telling me and were in Hawaii when the hospital I was in tried to contact them to let them know I had been in an accident.

The nurse came back to me saying that their phone was disconnected, and I was like assholes. Took me 3 days to track them down. They were like "whoops, forgot to mention that part about us moving continents".

They're usually pretty good at keeping me up to date with shit like that, but sometimes they're forgetful and it ends up making me freak out with worry.

THANK YOU ALL

I called the OPP (thanks Kevin) and they said there was no major event in Espo/Massey, but to call Bell to find out about the phone lines.

So after a talking to a very nice Bell guy--which in my experience is rare, maybe they've changed, I haven't dealt with them in3 years--and waiting a considerable time while he checked--he comes back to tell me that there are ongoing repairs happening on our line, one of the UNDERGROUND wires, which is why it's taking longer than usual cause they're digging our frozen yard up.

So they've gotta be fine--probably pissed off and all preoccupied, probably why she hasn't checked her bloody email, but fine.

Jesus. I would have an anyeurism, right then and there.

As much as I disparage my folks sedentary lifestyle (especially as they're totally unhealthy) they never do anything or go anywhere, so I can always contact them.

Internet may run through the phoneline as well, Lys.

:)

At home yes, at the school no. School's a different phoneline too, obviously.

I'm such an idiot to not think of calling bell--I'm such an idiot usually, but here we have a prime example--I can't thank you enough, if I hadn't called the opp, they wouldn't have suggested bell and I'd spend tonight worrying as well.

So weird...I'm worried about my parents right now too. They were on a flight from Vancouver arriving early this morning...the flight has arrived, according to the airline, but there's no answer at their house and no message from them (I left them a voicemail to call me.)

My mom has done stupid stuff before where she doesn't think about the fact that we might be worried, but my parents are together and I don't know what's going on.

my brother was supposed to fly into toronto recently - i didn't know what time his flight came in -- chick who organized the event he was coming to sing at told me it was supposed to arrive at 8:30 ... she went to the airport, waited for the flight, my bro didn't show. She waited an hour, he didn't show.

so she freaked otu and called me and insisted that something must have happened to him as a woman on the flight said she saw him (my bro is sometimes recognized by people) on theflight, that he sat behind her. then he never showed at the luggage area.

i was like, are yous ure? because where would he be? he wouldn't have left from teh airport without his ride etc. etc. etc.

she got me all freaked out.

so i called my mom and pretended i knew nothing, just asked her what time my brother's flight was. turns out it was an 8:30 PM arrival not AM like the stoopid event organizer thought. YEESH. Freaked me out for nuttin!

haha

So who's your brother?

Since this thread is back, I'll tell you the events since: received this email TODAY!

Hi, babe!
I don't know if this will actually work, but I thought I'd try. FYI: we
are without telephone and internet at home because of a frozen broken
line. Goodness knows when it will get fixed. Spring maybe. We have been
leaving the cell phone on, but because we're in a rather dead area, it's
touchy.
And I won't even mention the weather. Grrrrrrr.
How was your resignation received? Looking forward to the new job?
If this message does get through, try emailing me back here.
Love you!
Mom

This was sent from her school address, so she hasn't checked her hotmail, which is where I sent my "Why can't I call you, what's going on?" email.

It's nice of her to think of me on her own--three days later.
