This is why Ukraine matters.



Being the second largest country by area in Europe and has a population of over 40 million, Ukraine ranks:



1st in Europe in proven recoverable reserves of uranium ores



2nd place in Europe and 10th place in the world in terms of titanium ore reserves



2nd place in the world in terms of explored reserves of manganese ores (2.3 billion tons, or 12% of the world's reserves)



2nd largest iron ore reserves in the world (30 billion tons)



2nd place in Europe in terms of mercury ore reserves



3rd place in Europe (13th place in the world) in shale gas reserves (22 trillion cubic meters)



4th in the world by the total value of natural resources



7th place in the world in coal reserves (33.9 billion tons)



Ukraine is an important agricultural country:



1st in Europe in terms of arable land area



3rd place in the world by the area of black soil (25% of world's volume)



1st place in the world in exports of sunflower and sunflower oil



2nd place in the world in barley production and 4th place in barley exports



3rd largest producer and 4th largest exporter of corn in the world



4th largest producer of potatoes in the world

5th largest rye producer in the world



5th place in the world in bee production (75,000 tons)



8th place in the world in wheat exports



9th place in the world in the production of chicken eggs



16th place in the world in cheese exports



Ukraine can meet the food needs of 600 million people.



Ukraine is an important industrialized country:



1st in Europe in ammonia production



Europe's 2nd’s and the world’s 4th largest natural gas pipeline system



3rd largest in Europe and 8th largest in the world in terms of installed capacity of nuclear power plants;l



3rd place in Europe and 11th in the world in terms of rail network length (21,700 km)



3rd place in the world (after the U.S. and France) in production of locators and locating equipment



3rd largest iron exporter in the world



4th largest exporter of turbines for nuclear power plants in the world



4th world's largest manufacturer of rocket launchers



4th place in the world in clay exports



4th place in the world in titanium exports



8th place in the world in exports of ores and concentrates



9th place in the world in exports of defense industry products



10th largest steel producer in the world (32.4 million tons)



Ukraine matters. That is why its independence is important to the rest of the world. These resources are why Russia is chomping at the bit to take it.

Makes a lot of sense. There's been a lot of talk about how Russia is on the precipice of economic collapse again and is unsustainable as a country with its lack of exports and internationally competitive industries.

Russia's military is in a similar mindset as the US military is - lots of tough talk/swinging dick posturing, but little appetite for any action that isn't an easy win. Their own people are speaking out against the aggression.

Ukraine was very smart in getting their military back into shape and disciplined, after Russia started overtly messing with their politics and when Trump tried to strong arm them for dirt on Biden for the election - they saw that they had to rely on themselves if they wanted to protect their border.

I don't think I've ever witnessed bravery on the level of the 13 soldiers that told the Russian warship to go fuck themselves (actual words), knowing fully that they'd be annihilated with that response. Or the soldier that sacrificed himself blowing up a bridge to slow down the Russian advance. And their president - a former comedian who's down there on the frontlines with the troops, saying recently "I need more ammunition, not a ride out of here" when NATO offered to extract him from the country. Unbelievable example being set in the way of leadership - and hopefully other countries might take note.

Side benefit - all the bravery in the Ukraine has caused the Freedom Convoy to shut the fuck up and shown them as the snake oil salesmen that they were.

You know things are going bad for Russia when Sweden says it's going to get involved and Germany's following suit.

Ukraine is claiming to have inflicted nearly 10 times the number of casualties on the Russian forces than what Ukraine has suffered - US intelligence confirms that the Russian army is unmotivated, incompetent and undisciplined on the field - and says that the Ukraine's estimates aren't unbelievable or an exaggeration. The Russian operation is believed to have been expected to have wrapped up by the weekend, but the timetable feel apart in the first couple of days as they underestimated Ukraine's ability to repel their attacks.

No wonder Putin's trying to bully with the nuclear threats - he badly miscalculated the outcome of this. He's not going to be able to walk away from this like he has before. He knows he'll hang one way of another, if he even tries to go the nuclear route.

Putin is going to be the hot chick in the bachelorette party at a seedy club that everyone is trying to spike her drink for the rest of his life. Here's hoping he gets the Polonium Cocktail that he so eagerly liked to use on others.

I can't help what lesson China is taking away from watching all this....

i'm still curious about the timing of the convoy protests. I wonder what time may yet reveal to us on whether he was hoping to distract the west - i mean it feels like a plausible conspiracy theory to me that he was juicing the algorithms on these in social media and accelerating them, hoping those would light up even more (outside Canada too) so that when he went ahead and did this to Ukraine, capital cities in North America and Europe would be too busy managing trucker convoys to deal with the invasion.

Prepared for this to be completely proven wrong, just saying it's plausible

You've probably gone too far to think winter related malcontents are being mastered by a puppet as a planned factor for the invasion. More than likely just some synchronous welcome noise :)

No don't think *mastered* but more like "juiced" and "accelerated" through some amount of active measures.

Considering the leadership that Zelensky has demonstrated and the long record of setting a very good example to his own people, and that has put other world leaders to shame by comparison, I think the resistance to panic will hold.

Long game wins this, and spells defeat for the Russians. It's striking how similar the "sow fear" tactics that Putin and Trump used to underline their points when against the rops.

Various countries are taking sides and then pouring weapons and resources into an active war zone.

This is now World War III. It's just a question now of how large it becomes.

An accident or a strike on purpose of a US target will bring them into this confrontation as well.
