Worker buried under mountain of frozen food
Man presumed dead after skids collapse
Brampton plant suffers extensive structural damage

    KAREN PALMER
    STAFF REPORTER

A 57-year-old Brampton man was presumed dead last night after five racks filled with skids of frozen food collapsed and buried him under a nine-metre mountain of heavy, frozen foodstuffs.

The man was a half-hour from finishing his midnight shift at VersaCold, a food storage and processing plant on Walker Rd. in Brampton, when the racks collapsed around 7 a.m.

"He was last seen re-packaging a skid at the time. That's how we know where he was located and that was basically from the assistance of other employees," said Constable Wendy Sims, a spokesperson for Peel Region police.

Although no one is certain why the 15-metre-high, 30-metre-long racks collapsed, the building suffered extensive structural damage that forced police and firefighters to call off the rescue mission around 1:30 p.m. yesterday.

As the racks tumbled, they dropped hundreds of skids of frozen food that each weigh 816 kilograms or more than three-quarters of a tonne.

A portion of the roof caved in and a support beam in the building buckled, causing a seam in the building's siding to split, leaving a metre-wide gap that revealed crates and skids piled to the ceiling.

"We just weren't willing to put other people at risk. Police, plant employees, fire (crews), it just wasn't worth the risk to put them in harm's way," said Gary Jarrett, assistant division chief for Brampton Fire and Emergency Services.

"The freezer is melting and as a result, things are falling. It's very unstable. The roof collapsed and as a result of that, everything is just in the way," he said.

Food suppliers use the VersaCold facility to flash-freeze anything from ice cream to steak fillets. The food is then boxed, piled on skids and stored in the building's freezers until it is ready to ship.

The Walker Rd. facility is VersaCold's largest processing plant, with 8.6 million cubic feet of storage space.

Temperatures in the building's freezers range from minus 29C to 4C and, while rescue workers were frantically digging through piles of boxes of food to reach the trapped man, temperatures dipped to minus 26C.

Boxes of food pulled from the building were heaped into giant metal waste bins and hauled away. Although moving it and storing it in one of the building's other freezers could likely have saved the palettes of frozen food, Jarrett said workers were too focused on saving the man to worry about food spoilage.

Although police, firefighters and employees passed back food items piece by piece at a frenetic pace for almost seven hours, Jarrett said they'd only managed to move about 10 per cent of the food that had fallen and buried the victim.

"There's huge volumes of frozen food in there," he said. "There's a huge amount of food that has to come out of that freezer in order to safeguard (the building)."

Although it was too early to put a number to the damage, Jarrett said the figure would definitely climb into the millions.

"The damage estimate is huge here. There's going to be a huge economic loss to this factory and to the people here. I don't have a figure yet," he said.

Officials from the labour and health ministries and the Technical Safety and Standards Authority investigated the accident, but are still uncertain what caused the collapse.

The plant has been closed and the recovery attempt has been put on hold until structural engineers can guarantee the safety of the building. Jarrett said a plant manager told him they will help employees with an employee assistance package.

i used to work right next to that building. it really is sad.

my dad had a serious accident at work and it's the scariest thing ever. no one expects to go to work, and come home in a wheel chair or never come home at all.

At first, rescue workers were betting that he was alive, but then they realized that the steaks were too high. ;)

Hmm, the posts in this thread seem to disagree with what you wrote.

"Rest in peas" to mention but one.

I know his family would get a kick out of that one right about now.

what's wrong with the world, mama?
people livin like they ain't got no mamas
I think the whole world's addicted to the drama
only attracted to the things that'll bring the drama
overseas ya we tryin to stop terrorism
but we still got terrorists here livin
in the U.S.A, the big C.I.A
the bloods & the crips, and the KKK
but if you only got love for your own ways
then you only leave space to discriminate
and to discriminate only generates hate
and when you hate, then you're bound to get irate
    madness is what you demonstrate
and that's exactly how anger works and operates
man ya gotta have love, this'll set us straight
take control of your mind and meditate
let your soul gravitate, to the love ya'll

    people killin
    people dyin
    children hurt and
    women cryin
will you practice what you preach
and would you turn the other cheek
    father father father, help us
    need some guidance from above
these people got me got me questionin
    where is the love?
    (love) where is the love?
(the love) where is the love?
(the love) where is the love?
(where is the love the love my love)

    it just ain't the same
    old ways have changed
new days are strange, is world insane?
if love and peace is so strong
why are there pieces of love that don't belong
    nations droppin bombs
chemical gasses fillin lungs of little ones
with ongoin sufferin, as the youth die young
so ask yourself, is the lovin really gone
so I can ask myself, really what is going wrong
with this world that we livin in, people keep on givin in
makin wrong decisions, only visions of them dividends
not respectin eachother, deny thy brother
a war is goin on but the reason's under cover
the truth is kept secret, and swept under the rug
if you never know truth, then you never know love
    where's the love ya'll? (i don't know)

    where's the truth ya'll? (i don't know)
    and where's the love ya'll?

    people killin
    people dyin
    children hurt and
    women cryin
will you practice what you preach
and would you turn the other cheek

    (love) where is the love?
(the love) where is the love?
(the love) where is the love?
(where is the love the love my love)

I feel the weight of the world on my shoulder
as I'm getting older, ya'll people gets colder
most of us only care about money makin
selfishness got us followin the wrong direction
wrong information always shown by the media
negative images is the main criteria
infecting the young minds faster than bacteria
kids wanna act like what they see in the cinema
    ..
whatever happened to the values of humanity?
whatever happened to the fairness and equality
instead of spreading love we spreadin animosity
lack of understandin leading us away from unity
that's the reason why sometimes I'm feelin under
that's the reason why sometimes I'm feelin down
It's no wonder why sometimes I'm feelin under
gotta keep my faith alive till love is found
    now ask yourself

    where is the love?
    where is the love?
    where is the love?
    where is the love?
    father father father, help us

now sing with me ya'll (one love one love)
we only got (one love one love)
that's all we got (one love one love)
    and something's wrong with it
    something's wrong with it
    something's wrong with the w-w-world
we only got (one love one love)
that's all we got (one love one love)

By preceding the article with this comment, it seems to encourage the jokes (although I know that that was not Boss Hog's intention).

I personally don't find it too insensitive because most of the jokes are regarding the means of death, and not the person who died.

    Cheers ... Ian :)

If it was one of your family members that had died and you read this thread, would you still be okay with it?

It seems like a pattern, Boss Hog posts something from the news that is sad or tragic and then the fun comments begin to appear.

The article mentions no names, so you would never know for sure if they were talking about a relative of yours or not.

And if it was one of my family members, I would obviously be upset at the incident in a personal manner. But I honestly would not care about all the trivial jokes being posted, mainly because it is something that I would expect to happen.

    Cheers ... Ian :)

That's sad that you expect there will be jokes on this board about people's lives being lost.

Who doesn't expect it? Just look at all the recent threads regarding sensitive topics. They are full of jokes. That just proves my point as to why I would expect it.

Can you tell me a joke that does NOT insult someone (and I mean a funny one, not a "Why did the rabbit ..." type one)? The whole basis of joke-telling is the insult of a different person, group, or culture. Most jokes are a social observation that points out the inadequacies of a person/group/country/etc that is not one of your own.

It is just a matter of what you draw the line at. Some people are more sensitive than others.

    Cheers ... Ian :)

I am not overly sensitive. I disagree with something and I am automatically sensitive.

When topics are of a serious nature like death, I don't think that it's always appropriate to laugh at them.

But it almost proves my point, because you jumped to conclusions and automatically assumed it was an insult about you.

I was not implying anything about you personally. Just that everyone has different levels of sensitivity.

yes, people use humour to help deal with difficult issues and events, but this is just obnoxious. i know that it's tough to feel a connection to people who you have never met, whose names you may not even know, whose faces you'll probably never see, but fuck. is this really necessary? this man's death is not even slightly funny. he got crushed while at work. crushed. a person. fuck. i give up.

using this story as a way to take jabs at suedehead =
