TURIN, Italy — Sweden shocked the United States with a 3-2 shootout win in a women’s Olympic hockey semifinal Friday.
Pernilla Winberg scored first in the shootout and Maria Rooth followed with the clincher as Sweden won the shootout 2-0, thanks largely to goaltender Kim Martin who stopped Natalie Darwitz, Jenny Potter and Angela Ruggiero, Krissy Wendell.
Martin was the story of the game, stopping 37 of 39 shots through regulation and overtime. She Martin also held off the U.S. during a power play in the overtime.
“We really believed it, that’s why I think we won,†Martin told CBC. “Everything went for us today.â€
American goalie Chanda Gunn turned away 15 of 17 shots before the shootout.
It is a major upset in the sport. Canada and the U.S. have met in the final in all nine world championships and both Olympic Games, but it will be Sweden playing for its first gold medal Monday.
“This is going to be huge,†Martin said of playing in the final. “This is history.â€
Sweden will meet the winner of today’s later semifinal between Canada and Finland for the gold medal Monday.
Rooth scored twice for Sweden, including a short-handed goal. Kristin King and Kelly Stephens scored power-play goals for the U.S.
The U.S. scored with a man advantage in the first and second periods before Rooth scored a pair to tie the game heading into the third period
