Woman downs whole bottle of cognac at Beijing airport security control

A Chinese woman reportedly downed a full bottle of £120 cognac at security control after she was told she was not allowed to take liquids on board her flight – which she was then prevented from boarding.

The woman, who has been named only as Zhao, was deemed too drunk to fly by staff at Beijing Capital international airport when she collapsed shortly after drinking the bottle of Rémy Martin XO Excellence.

Police and airline staff then reportedly denied the woman access to the flight, concerned her inebriation would be a safety risk.

She is believed to have purchased the cognac at a US airport and was in transit through Beijing, where she was due to take a domestic flight to Wenzhou.

Staff told her she was not allowed to carry the bottle in her hand luggage because it exceeded the 100ml limit, and apparently not wanting to waste the purchase, she drank the entire contents.

One local paper described how she had started shouting at the departure gate before collapsing. “She was rolling on the ground, shouting,” a police officer told the Beijing Times

She was taken back to the airport lounge in a wheelchair and the airport’s medical staff were called to assist her, the officer added.

The South China Morning Post reported that the woman woke up seven hours later and thanked police for assisting her, and that family members had arrived to escort her home.

I went to duty free in Toronto last weekend and had a bottle of vodka and a bottle of scotch. Fortunately for me the cashier was smart enough to remind me that with a Beijing stopover, the bottles would be confiscated. I always thought that the sealed duty free bag would be allowed through.

Besides that... Beijing airport sucks.

Yup, Beijing airport does suck. Hong Kong airport for the win!

I'm surprised they sold her the bottle at Duty Free. I've been denied purchase at Duty Free's because they look at your ticket and see that your next destination is not final (especially if you do not have access to your checked luggage), so therefore the error is on the part of the American Duty Free. Some people may disagree with me on this but you cannot expect every single shopper to be aware of these intricate rules.

the gentlemanly thing would have been to open the bottle, and ask everyone in line if they've ever tried remy martin xo and/or would like to take a belt. Now THAT would have been a plane ride to remember - everyone just slightly buzzed - and you come off looking like a suuuper chill chinese lady.

Yes! That would have been awesome, hahaha.

Oh, here's another tip for buying alcohol and traveling. Normally when you arrive back to Canada you're exception is only 1 bottle of hard liquor (or two bottles of wine or something). Well, anytime I go away for 2+ weeks I always bring back 4 bottles. You just have to know that Duty Free will only sell you 1, so buy them in the country before you get to the airport.
