Wikileaks.org, due to release all those classified and secret US documents today, has been shut down by a massive DOS attack.

the US state department must be really shitting their pants about whats in the documents if they're launching an attack like this (obviously making the large assumption that the attack is coming from gov't computers).

maybe they dont have the legal grounds to seize the domain.
Piracy sites already have a precedence to be shut down, no?

Also worth noting is that wikileaks has put a 1.4 gb AES encrypted file out on the torrents they are calling "History Insurance" which probably contains all the documents and just needs a key to open. Or perhaps it contains the paths to other locations where the documents exist. Who knows how many times that has been downloaded? A lot I bet.

If you are a traveler to the USA it might not be a good idea to DL it or have it on your computer (even if you can't open it) because if discovered, you might wind behind bars.

It is not for me and most of the world though. They had to make that DOS announcement via twitter!

i want to download that, but being in the US makes it seem like not the best idea possibly.

Maybe it wasn't working before but it is now.

    What does it mean?

Maybe they blocked a lot of the DOS hits on the servers to open it up again, or maybe the DOS was caused by a million journalists around the world trying to check their site every 30 seconds.

A lot of the documents are out now on the Guardian site and some on the NYtimes site. Nothing involving Canada yet though.

I also find it really bizarre that the US network security was so lame that a 22 year old private could DL all that material, all of it well above his pay grade or need his to know. It is strange really. I wonder if they have improved their security in that respect?

It's down for me, and I couldn't be bothered to torrent the stuff. I'll wait for a reporter to do the sifting and analyzing for me.

Kady O'Malley at CBC is pretty hyped about this and is all over it. If anything in there is relevant to Canada I am sure she will sift it out of the pile. Follow her on twitter @kady

    China hacking

There is concern over the alleged growing use of large scale computer hacking by the Chinese government. Cables reports claims that a network of hackers and private security experts has been employed by China since 2002and that it has hacked into US government and business computers, those of Western allies and the Dalai Lama.

The cables quote a Chinese contact telling the US embassy in Beijing that the Chinese government had been behind the hacking of Google's computer systems in the country in January.

    Pakistan stand-off

The cables show US concern over radioactive material in nuclear power stations in Pakistan, with fears it could be used in terror attacks. They reveal the US has been attempting to remove highly enriched uranium from a research reactor in Pakistan since 2007.

In a May 2009 cable, US ambassador Anne W Patterson says Pakistan had refused a visit from US experts. She quotes a Pakistani officials as saying removing the fuel would be seen in Pakistan "as the United States taking Pakistan's nuclear weapons".

    Biometric spying on UN

A cable to US diplomats issued under US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's name tells them to collect "biographic and biometric" information - including iris scans, DNA samples and fingerprints - on key officials at the UN. They are also ordered to find credit card details, email addresses and passwords and encryption keys used for computer networks and in official communications.

The officials covered include "undersecretaries, heads of specialised agencies and their chief advisers, top SYG [secretary general] aides, heads of peace operations and political field missions, including force commanders".

At least nine similar directives covering various countries are included in the Wikileaks release, both under the name of Mrs Clinton and her predecessor, Condoleezza Rice.

Saudi king urges US strike on Iran

The King, Foreign Minister, Prince Muqrin, and Prince Nayif all agreed that the Kingdom needs to cooperate with the US on resisting and rolling back Iranian influence and subversion in Iraq. The King was particularly adamant on this point, and it was echoed by the senior princes as well. Al-Jubeir recalled the King's frequent exhortations to the US to attack Iran and so put an end to its nuclear weapons program. "He told you to cut off the head of the snake," he recalled to the Charge', adding that working with the US to roll back Iranian influence in Iraq is a strategic priority for the King and his government.
