Why you should get vaccinated (against infectious diseases)

Thanks Ruby. I thought H1N1 was all hype, but if you tell me it's killing people my gender and age, and that the vaccine has been sufficiently tested, I'll go ahead with it.

+1 for not winding up in the ICU at 29.

Strange, I know a lot of women who would swear off drinking even a drop of alcohol, taking even one drag off a cigarette, who would reduce or completely cut out consumption of fish/seafood, etc., all in the name of protecting their baby. "why would I do/consume anything that could potentially harm my baby?" When its for their baby, it all makes sense - do whatever you can.

Now, when it comes to protecting ourselves (and the population, don't forget) from an alarming influenza virus, we start to say "well, I wash my hands regularly, get a good diet and don't inject drugs. Therefore I'm OK, I don't need to take the extra precaution that a vaccination provides." So, all of a sudden "doing everything that you can" isn't that important.

Funny eh?

and, re: the cold:

1) there is no vaccine for the cold, so you don't have a choice do you?
2) for influenza, and H1N1 in particular, you do have a choice. And if the vaccine is recommended for you in particular, and you elect not to choose it, you are making a choice not only for yourself, but for your neighbours, coworkers, the city, people who share your subway car...

actually, a single drop of wine, or even a glass every now and then is perfectly fine and quite common in some European countries.

I'm sorry, but I'm just not buying into the 'those around you' argument today. People get colds, everyday - they don't have vaccines for that... yet!

There are basic hygiene practices that reduces the transfer of germs immensely, not to mention the basic rule of thumb, if you *think* you might be sick or getting sick, avoid the sick.

By that argument, you're suggesting that anyone who gets sick with any virus should be held up in quarantine till they're well again.

Sorry, but that gets a big WHAT-EVER from me.

You are incredibly fucking stupid. You need a vaccine to prevent stupidity before anything else.

Christ, and you have children...People should seriously need a license before procreating.

You needed TRIBE to tell you this!?

The level of stupidity in the various H1N1 threads is absolutely mind boggling and downright frightening.

Thanks to Ruby and the good Doctor for infusing some COMMON sense and intelligence in to this mess.

This is way off track but just because something is commonly practiced doesn't mean it's perfectly fine. Fetal alcohol syndrome exists on a spectrum, meaning just because your kid isn't actually retarded doesn't mean they don't have learning disabilities or reduced executive functioning that could have been prevented or mitigated by not drinking during pregnancy. It's also very under-diagnosed.

Prenatal alcohol exposure is the leading known preventable cause of
intellectual disabilities and neurobehavioral disorders in the developed world
affecting as many as 40,000 newborns each year in the United States alone,
more cases annually than autism or other commonly known birth defects such as Downs syndrome, cerebral palsy, cystic fibrosis, spina bifida and sudden infant death syndrome, combined.

People go out of their way to prevent Down's, spina bifida, and SIDS yet for some reason snub their nose at the risk of giving their child a lifelong intellectual impairment that is preventable by simply abstaining for 9 months because French women drink or other nonsense.

is your daughter is going to get the big WHAT-EVER from you when you give her H1N1? especially when she is way more susceptible to it?

Leogirl, can you please, for those of us trying to give you at least some benefit in this pile of doubt, provide your reasons for not immunizing you and your family for H1N1 and other diseases?

I think the best thing anyone can do in regards to any health matters is to ALWAYS make an INFORMED decision for themselves and their family and when I mean by INFORMED, I mean NOT TRIBE.

There is too much egotistical and judgmental attitude than educational information and it's only a waste of time and energy.

LeoGirl, don't ever let anyone dictate what kind of mother you are, people are too quick to analyze other people's lives than your own.
You're a great mother, don't ever forget that and you don't own anyone any explanations, especially on a message board.

ila it's fairly well reported in the news that the people who are having the worst reactions to swine flu are young women. It's still a relatively small risk because most cases of the flu are mild but I wouldn't brush it off, the "I'm healthy and young" argument doesn't seem to hold as much weight for this virus.

The vaccine has been tested exactly the same way the annual flu shot is, it hasn't been rushed, it took the same amount of time to make as other flu shots and has already passed international clinical trials.

I have asthma which puts me in a special risk group so I'll be getting the shot if I can get it. I prefer dead viruses to live ones.

disclaimer: i'm only discussing h1n1 flu vaccination.

no it has been fully tested, that's still continuing:

WHO | Pandemic influenza vaccines: current status

although, tests thusfar show any side effects as being similar to the regular vaccination.

i love how we've degenerated to name calling (not you ruby) for those that are expressing a different opinion.
