Who wants a free holiday? vote now

I'd really like to know who the other practically 50% are that are voting against the holiday.

We should send them all to work when we're sitting at home honouring our forefathers.

A "free" holiday? As opposed to the ones that we currently have to pay for?

The interesting thing about this poll is that the results are almost exactly 50/50 (within one vote when I just checked now). I have a feel it is "fixed" or is being done to proove some point.

interesting that it's actually split 50/50 for having the holiday. dum non-slacking canadians.

what ever happened to that Labatt (or Molson) sponsored holiday in June? or was that just a sneaky way to get my non-existant hotmail addy so they could spam me?

I just got this via email a few minutes ago.
I said to my manager - I can't believe it is 50/50.
He couldn't either - verbatum "the work is still there we just have to try to cram in all this extra work in an even shorter time span - I would definitely vote no"

riiiight that is exactly what I was thinking

Make that first four, cuz you just commented on it again.

this is a holiday for everyone right?

it would include schools and such?

Can you name a holiday that workers get but students don't?

I argue for Canada to become a world culture we need to take a week off for a festival/street party celebrating life. Every major culture throughout history has had a celebration that lasted a week. We've focused on efficency and lost our humanity.

Screw one day I think Canada Day should be a week long event and should have days to celebrate culture and history and art.

the 50% voting no, obviously haven't been told that they will have a holiday. who cares what it's about. labatt tried to get an extra holiday added last year didn't they? who cares... we need mor vacation time in the summer. it stimulates the economy anyways.

I think we should be celebrating Martin Luther King day here. I know he was American, but what he meant to the civil rights movement is universal.

I also think the 50/50 split is more about whether they support a holiday that Honours Prime Ministers as to another type of celebration.

Wouldn't Lincon make more sense than? I mean he actually did abolish slavery and made all "men" equal.

Just out of curiosity was there ever a time when property owning black men couldn't vote in Canada? Was there ever a time that black men were not able to legally own property?

i realize there was a period where to vote you had to be male, and previous to that I was pretty sure that you had to own property.

Umm... NO! Lincoln would not be more appropriate. Emancipation Proclamation my ass, it wasn't until a man from Atlanta Georgia single handedly changed the attitude of a nation with only the power of his voice did the real emancipation start to take place. Like the Americans I think we should be celebrating his birthday because he was a great man, that most of us can identify ourselves with.

Should we celebrate it here? Maybe not. I do. Yes Canada had slavery. As for your other points... I don't know, don't care.

Actually, for a certain period of time, Canada still had slavery while a few neighbouring American states had already abolished it. That meant black slaves were sneaking OUT of Canada to find freedom in the States (a kind of reverse underground railroad!).

People often forget that abolishing slavery has always been a local decision.

I can understand why business owners would oppose losing a day of production or sales. Across the entire economy, a statutory holiday does indeed cost billions of dollars.

On the other hand, I think a substantial economic benefit would be realized from increased travel (ie. going skiing on this long weekend), and increased liquor sales (speaks for itself!).

lincon and martin luther king both did wonderful things. please don't argue that point. it was two different time periods, and one made the other possible. which was a greater accomplishment does not matter, it just matters that both were done.

you could always create a holiday that celebrates the contributions of all people in the fight for equality.

My mom used to always get Rememberance Day off work (she works for the government), while we had to go to school.

Maybe a bunch of Americans posted the link on various American message boards and are getting everyone to vote No.

This poll is bunk.
