Where's the place to get dreads?

Last time I dredded my hair I was all 15 and did it myself. I wish I had done it properly dammit! Gah... I'm not nearly stinky enough....

Anyway, I've been growing my hair for a while to dread it again and I was wondering what the best place to get them done in Toronto. I really want to do it up proper. I was just going to wait for the insects to do it for me, but they keep pushing for the pompadour and it's getting out of hand.

Pretty Eclectic is a salon that specializes in dreads, they're located somewhere on Queen West (sorry don't remember the address). They also have a website. And I don't have that on me either.

*shrug*

There's also this service called...sumthin-sisters. Needle, thread, crochet...perhaps? They use this technique where they use crochet needles to upkeep dreads and it works really well from everyone I've spoken to.

There's also Dreadmaster Drew on King @ John. He's one of the best out there.

If you wanna do it up ghetto style, there's a place called Natty's or something in the heart of mississauga on Hurontario just south of Dundas. You may have to fake a jamaican accent to get in. :)

My friend went there to get cornrows done once while really hung over. He barfed after two rows and got kicked out.

LOL.

Yeah, my friend gets hers touched up every 1/2 year or so(some people do it more often) and it costs her ~120$ a pop.

used to be you could appropriate a people's symbol of spirtituality and anti-colonialism in the name of mindless Western boho-coolness for twelve bucks! Where we headed as a society?

The best thing to do is get someone to piece and backcomb them for you. It usually takes about 3 or 4 hours. You look like Sideshow Bob for a few days, but it won't cost you anything. It also depends on how many and how big you want your dreads to be. The most important thing to remember is NEVER put wax or any sort of junk in your hair, if you do you will either have to remove it later or risk having your dreads smelll awful. If you have a pothead friend buy them an eighth and set them to work. If you want any specific info about how to piece them or hand roll them just PM me.

mr tall- I have never had a problem finding a job with dreads, not in downtown Toronto. Most people with dreads woundn't want a job that required a certain hairstyle. It would be different if I were applying for an office job or a job in fine dining.

kerouacdude- We live in the west, everything here is appropriated from some culture. What exactly is a white hairstyle? Does that mean that black people shouldn't use hair relaxers because it means they are trying to be white? Dreads are just hair, most people I know with them aren't making a claim about Rastafari culture, black people included.

Spend the money. Dreads looks really dirty and shitty if not done properly.

I think what the previous post meant:

Shitty dreads=unemployed hippy flower child

Proper dread= not unemployed hippy flower child

they're east of bathurst, right near velvet.

well, i was trying to make a joke at 3 in the morning. But to your point, dreads have a real specific history that isn't akin to someone straightening their hair. As for your last sentence, don't you think that's a little sad? That everything's up for grabs, and doesn't have to mean anything anymore? Everything I've ever read indicates that the majority of believers find it annoying at least and disrespectful at worst when people go nappy just for the hell of it.

At the very least you must agree it's bemusing that something that could get you killed in Uganda or Kenya or more recently, scorned for in Jamaica (including by most blacks) gets worn by people who've known very little discomfort.

what's the difference between a white person having dreads, and a white person having a nose pierced? or some tribal jewellery in their face. or a white person doing their makeup in traditional japanese style?

i guess you could consider it misappropriated, but it's kinda small minded. to say that only people from a certain place or culture can look like this, and do these things. where's the room for appreciation and enjoyment of each other? ESPECIALLY in canada.
