When is the Party over?

One thing I think bears mentioning is that as people get older their social needs mature and deepen. While when you're 16 it's a blast to go to a party full of good looking positive people and engage in the typical party small talk ("hey, how's it going, what you been up to, yadda yadda yadda) as time goes on this is not as fulfilling. I think a lot of us have noticed over the past couple years that getting together with friends in a more intimate environment conducive towards proper conversations is more rewarding than just going to a party with a whole whack of peeps. For example people here have best gotten to know each other through things like the house party, barbecues, or the cottage trip.

If you go for the music at a party as I do, that typically means that your state of mind isn't really focused on socializing as a primary objective. If you're going to hang out with people, it's not the optimal medium for that. I talk to a lot of people at parties, end up running into acquaintances from past parties, and meet a whole bunch of new people as well - but really when you think about it, while there are many people around you how many do you actually get to know on a meaningful level? I think the truth of it is that in the party scene we overestimate people who are really not much more than acquaintances and if we don't see people outside of a club/party context then those relationships don't develop much further than that.

Word! to Libradragon, Subsonic Chronic, alexd and @m. (and others.)

Stop partying when you don't like it anymore. I've had stretches of 8 months when I don't go out at all. The things is, I LOVE THE MUSIC AND I LOVE DANCING. I party sober most of the time (well, I do drink, but I'm working on cutting this out of my clubbing experience, as it's just a waste of money, and I can drink like a fish), and going out and hearing sweet music blasting over a good (loud) system and spazzing out is great fun for me. Yes, I'm older than the average clubber. So what? Everyone needs to decide for themselves.

gRoOviegurl: Just a suggestion, maybe you should think about not being so judgemental towards how other people live their lives. Saying someone is "disgusting and pathetic" because of something they do which has virtually no bearing on you, and they're not hurting anyone, is kinda fucked. What the fuck do you care if some woman is over 40, but she's into the music and loving it? Who knows, maybe she's more in love with the music and the feeling of the scene than you are. Look to the beam in your own eye before the mote in you neighbor's, or some such cliched old saying shit. Just a thought.

Fuck anyone who tells me what they think I should be doing based on my age. FUCK YOU, I tell them. FUCK YOU. You go and live your life in all its rat in a maze glory. I'll live mine the way I want. If you're happy, I'm happy. If I'm happy, well, I'm happy.

BBB.

Happy. -> :) :p :D

..not ->   <-that's mad.

Continuing to play the devil's advocate, sometimes I find that I prefer to listen to music on my home system (which sounds incredible) and I have no shortage of music. Going out to hear stuff played out is a nice way to see what a DJ brings to the tables (ha-ha) live, but live sets are not exactly hard to get a hold of, and most DJ's spin pretty similar sets by date. Further, if you're a trainspotter like me, it's a lot easier to listen to a part of a set over again and go hunting for the track than it is to find out what it is in a club.

That being said, I don't see myself partying forever but paradoxically I don't see myself stopping anytime soon. I still get a kick out of a room going completely off and the sound of subwoofers as big as cars.

Sorry, I can only read that if you edit it, put everything in BOLD and put the font size to the maximum. The eyes aren't what they used to be.

ZZzzzzzz... WHAT? I didn't order any sardines.

Some very Interesting topics raised in this thread.

As a retired raver - all i can say is - I still love the music, more than ever, but I just am very selective in choosing the events I go to. I still try to make it out with my girl - when I get the itch to dance and hear a fav. deejay. But still being the snob - i still refuse to pay cover or wait in lines.......so I don't make it out all that often anymore as my name does not hold the clout it used to in some circles....LOL!

When you get older <insert Oldskool party reference here> - the whole party lifestyle begins to lose its lusture - especially if you are in a relationship with a like-minded thinker. But we still make the effort to hit a jam every so often...

Honestly I'd much rather play golf with my boys and then join the ladies in the backyard for a full-on raging barbeque (with my personal series of fav. outdoors tapes) then spend all night in a dark club and all day sleeping it off.

But I think the most important thing I have gotten out of this thread is simply that "Evil will always win because Good is Dumb..."

super word up at deep, that's exactly what I was thinking.

I go to clubs/parties to hear music, dance and engage in shallow conversation with the other partiers. However, I find myself going less and less lately, I think for three reasons:

1. I actually can't take the all night journey anymore, it makes my next day useless.

2. I go only for the music, so I'll go and see a specific Dj that I want to see, but I won't go just for the sake of it. Often (Like when Howells was in T.O. 2 weeks ago) I'll party it up with my friends at a house party, then slide over to the club 10 min before the dj I want to go and see is supposed to go on.

3. Clubs aren't nearly as social as lounges/bars.

Okay, thanks to deep I can't get spaceballs out of my head. This movie rawks and was my fav. Mel Brooks one by far (except maybe Blazing Saddles).

So In honour of a great flick that had slipped my mind until today....

One thing that sucks about going out when you get a little older is that your tolerance of crowds has somehow been removed from your personality somewhere along the way. We only go to events which we know will have some room to actually move around in - last time I was at System I almost freaked out cause of the shoving, overcrowdedness and violation of the fire code.

Even when I was going to all-ages parties, I much preferred the ones where the venue vs crowd allowed for some breathing space.

Also, if you are older, you run the risk of some cheese-eating high-school kid asking you if you're a narc! :D
