when is cannibalism acceptable?

and how do you broach the subject?

I just got back from a soccer game in the andes and I'm stuffed.

last night a friend and I were eating mcnuggets and I made the off hand comment that "this is what americans must taste like".

it got us playing the "if you were in a life and death situation, would do eat a persons butt?" game. I would. without hesitation. fuck, I could have a big ol' bowl of ass right now.

so... tribe... you fingerlicking group, you...

what type of person would you eat if you're stuck in a perilous life and death situation. would you rack of lamb that chubby business man from first class? would try the school buffer of first graders? does eating a chinese person mean you'll be hungry again in an hour?

I wanna know, who would you eat?

... if you had to.

"what you have done, you weren't there, what would you have done?"

"sir, we're not talking about plane crash in the andes, you're the sole survivor of a 35 minute delay."

"thirty five mintues I will never get back!"

"you ate 147 of your fellow passengers... you could have eaten just one but no... WHY?"

"Ack, I never got on that plane expecting to eat anyone! I just tried each one in the hopes that the next would be better! I'm sure your honor has done the same with box of chocolates!"

"No... my wife does it and I hate it... I guess it wouldn't matter if I still loved her but lets face it, I need some time to myself! Case dismissed!"

If you're even half serious with your question about when it would seem appropriate, there were some eyewitness accounts of cannibalism happening during WW2 on the German/Soviet front, and among Japanese infantry. So I guess an obvious answer would be during a time of war.

I've never seen Alive but I read "the book based on the movie" (love those) when I was far too young to do so. I was like this  the whole time.

In any case, I'd probably suck it up and suck it up, given a desperate situation (and the eatee was already dead). Pass me another hunk of copilot.

I remember watching this blurb on the history of communist china where they were telling an anecdote about this community who took Mao's book to the literal extreme and consumed three or so public school teachers on the interpretation of a passage of one of his statements. Town gathering eats learned members, absorbs powers? food for thought.

you don't really brag about these moments... but every so often you hear about how cultures eat their enemies hearts or eyes or liver to gain their strength, courage, etc.

if I'd have to suck down an eyeball, it'd be some one I respected. like col. sanders or shaq or jesus.

i always wondered "are we what we eat?"

you can alter the taste of beef by feeding a cow different grain, true! so would a vegan taste different that some kfc greaseball?

I'd have to say YES! but would want to sample a bit before I made a commitment on a butt bacon.

What about if you're shipwrecked on a desert isle with nothing but a scalpel and a shitload of morphine?

there were tribes in New guinea that were cannibals up until early last century...they had to stop due to diseases that were transmitted from spinal cord matter, nearly wiped themselves out

eating each other was their highest source of protein as their environment was not optimal for cattle

when in new guinea........

If i had to do it, i'd definitely pick a younger female - one that was slightly plump (hopefully that would indicate good marbling). My guess would be males would be too tough. I'd prolly pick one the same way i'd pick a chicken...and you damn well sure i'd try a bit of everything (chinese ppl, we eat everything, no waste)

Actually we taste like pork, and there is very little variation in the flavour of pork related to what its fed.

Polar bears are doing it too

Polar bears turn cannibal
TENILLE BONOGUORE

Globe and Mail Update

Two polar bears have starved to death and two others were found dead this year in the region where scientists previously discovered unprecedented cannibalism within the population.

Scientists were stunned to discover that two mother polar bears had been stalked, killed and eaten near their Beaufort Sea dens, and that much larger male bears cannibalized a young male during the spring of 2004.

Now, four more dead polar bears have been found in the Alaskan and Canadian regions of the Beaufort Sea, and researchers are getting very worried.

What was initially thought to be a curious event could indicate a radical shift in the behaviour of polar bears as they battle dangerous drops in nutrition levels, said the lead author of a report into the 2004 deaths.

Dr. Steven Amstrup, polar bear project leader for the US Geological Survey, Alaska Science Centre, said cannibalism is not unheard of in bear populations, but it usually happens after an has animal died for other reasons, such as during a fight over territory.

What sets the 2004 deaths apart is the calculated manner in which the bears appear to have been sniffed out, stalked and killed by large males bears hunting for food.

“These are very rare events. The fact that we observed three in a row is very profound,” Dr. Amstrup said.

This year, researchers found two females with radio-tags were found dead from starvation in Alaska and the remains of a third.

Canadian researchers found one dead polar bear in their study region.

“We've never seen anything like that before,” Dr Amstrup said. “Two of the dead bears were extremely emaciated and appeared to have starved. We don't know what the cause of the starvation was. We're concerned these could be another symptom of changes in the habitat, but we don't know enough yet to know.”

The radio-collared bears had not exhibited any unusual roaming habits before their deaths, he said.

While the 2004 deaths could be due to a rogue bear, or could be a regular occurrence not witnessed before, Dr. Amstrup said the trigger was more likely nutritional stress caused by dwindling food sources.

“Four of the last five years have been record ice retreats in the polar basin. That gives polar bears the option of staying on land, which isn't too common here, or staying on the sea ice further off shore,” he said.

Both options appear to cut access to food, he said. The report states that adult males in the southern Beaufort Sea region were in poorer condition than bears to the north and west. Males concentrate on breeding during spring, as opposed to feeding, and are the first to show adverse effects to large ice retreats.

“Most wildlife respond to changes in the environment in a series of steps with rapid transitions. We can see a gradual change over time in the condition of sea ice. We might not see a gradual change for polar bears. They might reach a threshold and have to respond in a different way. There might be a very major change in the distribution of polar bears,” Dr. Amstrup said.

Two cannibals are feasting on a young boy.

Cannibal #1 - "How's the meal going?"
Cannibal #2 - "I'm having a ball!"
Cannical #1 - "Well then you're eating too fast!"

one million years ago, when i worked as a cook we would often have this conversation.

and the end result of it all is that you should make friends with a butcher, 'cause he knows all about getting the best from your friends.

and for me, enough spice and coconut sauce would make the stringiest junkie taste damn fine.
