What the hell is a compliance officer?

I've been approached with having an interview with a company for a compliance officer, but the thing is, I'm not totally sure what the job entails. Looking around on the web hasn't really told me much, as it seems to be as vague a position as a business analyst.

Anyone? Shed some light on this? Anyone?

Well in the Competition Bureau of my Department, they inspect things, businesses, etc... make sure they're complying.

Sounds really funny, but the truth.

Like that flea markets are selling 10K gold and not 9K gold.
And that the Tommy Shirt is really a Tommy shirt, etc...

At the company I work for, an investment firm, the complaince officers make sure we are complying with all rules and regulations.
They monitor all activity, and investigate trades that may look suspicious.

They bother us a lot with trivial things. And we have to spend time explaining why we did certain things to please them.

They check all new accounts opened to make sure everything was done properly and everything complies with policy and procedure.

compliance in my industry (fashion) involves making sure all our vendors are following our rules and following up when they don't. it also involves alot to do with trademark laws and industry regulations (labeling act, metal stamping, blah blah blah)
