I can't think it's funny how shittily designed these costumes were back then.

You get some vaguely resembling mask to some celebrity and then place a garbage bag over the kid with a sign that will identify him to anyone who has no clue who the fuck the kid is. Man, that's ghetto fabulous marketing brilliance.

I remember in the early 80's of how excited i was to go get an Amazing Spiderman TM (C) costume of this caliber and was mortified to see that when i got it, i had no cool black spider on the front. Instead was a picture of himself swinging through New York, with "Amazing Spiderman" sprawled across the chest area..

I was like WTF! And i just wore the mask with a red & blue jogging suit I had.

ahhhh.. my first run-in with corporate marketing.

If you're referring to the Welcome Back Kotter image, yeah, that's how he got his big break. He also did a movie called The Boy In the Plastic Bubble which was a movie of the week, which is actually kinda funny (not intentionnally).

Travolta also had a small role in Carrie before he hit it big time with Saturday Night Fever.
