If you had to choose one song write now to define who you are/where your are in life what would it be?

Post the lyrics, it becomes more intriguing that way

At the risk of being completely blacklisted...
at some point in my life I declared that
"To the Moon and Back" by Savage Garden was my song... now..not too sure.

"it's mine, but you can have some, with you I'd like to share it...and if I share it with you..do do do do....YOU'LL HAVE SOME TOO" ~~ Raffie

I've chosen to interpret it in a more mature manor now that I'm older...it's a lot more fun that way.

Not a Pretty Girl - Ani Difranco

I am not a pretty girl
That is not what I do
I ain't no damsel in distress
And I don't need to be rescued
So put me down punk
Wouldn't you prefer a maiden fair
Isn't there a kitten
Stuck up a tree somewhere

I am not an angry girl
But it seems like
I've got everyone fooled
Every time I say something
They find hard to hear
They chalk it up to my anger
And never to their own fear
And imagine you're a girl
Just trying to finally come clean
Knowing full well they'd prefer
You were dirty
And smiling

And I am sorry
I am not a maiden fair
And I am not a kitten
Stuck up a tree somewhere

And generally my generation
Wouldn't be caught dead
Working for the man
And generally I agree with them
Trouble is you gotta have youself
An alternate plan
I have earned my disillusionment
I have been working all of my life
And I am a patriot
I have been fighting the good fight
And what if there are
No damsels in distress
What if I knew that
And I called your bluff
Don't you think every kitten
Figures out how to get down
Whether or not you ever show up

I am not a pretty girl
I don't really want to be a pretty girl
I want to be more than a pretty girl

REM - Losing My Religon

Oh life is bigger
It's bigger than you
And you are not me
The things that I would go to
The distance in your eyes
Oh no I've said too much
I set it up

Thats me in the corner
Thats me in the spotlight
Losing my religion
Trying to keep a view
And I don't know if I can do it
Oh no I've said too much
I haven't said enough

I thought that I heard you laughing
I thought that I heard you sing
I think I thought I saw you try

Every whisper
Every waking hour
I'm choosing my confessions
Trying to keep eye on you
Like a hurt lost and blinded whore
For oh no I've said too much
I set it up

Consider this, consider this
Hit of the century
Consider this, a slip
That brought me to my needs
Hail, what if all these spinacies
Come fading around
Now I've said too much

I thought that I heard you laughing
I thought that I heard you sing
I think I thought I saw you try

That was just a dream
That was just a dream

That's me in the corner
That's me in the spotlight
Losimg my religion
Trying to keep a view
And I don't know if I can do it
Oh no I've said too much
I haven't said enough

I thought that I heard you laughing
i thought that I heard you sing
T think I thought I saw you try
That was just a dream
Try, cry, why, try
That was just a dream
Just a dream, just a dream
Dream

Olivia Newton John - John Travolta - Summer Nights shut up

Summer lovin', had me a blast
Summer lovin', happened so fast
Met a girl crazy for me
Met a boy cute as can be
Summer days drifting away
To, uh oh, those summer nights

Well-a, well-a, well-a, uh!

(Tell me more, tell me more)
(Did you get very far?)
(Tell me more, tell me more)
(Like does he have a car?)

She swam by me, she got a cramp
He ran by me, got my suit damp
Saved her life, she nearly drowned
He showed off splashing around
Summer sun, something's begun
But, uh oh, those summer nights

Well-a, well-a, well-a, uh!

(Tell me more, tell me more)
(Was it love at first sight?)
(Tell me more, tell me more)
(Did she put up a fight?)

Took her bowling in the arcade
We went strolling, drank lemonade
We made out under the dock
We stayed out till ten o'clock
Summer fling don't mean a thing
But, uh oh, those summer nights

(Tell me more, tell me more)
(But you don't gotta brag)
(Tell me more, tell me more)
('Cause he sounds like a drag)

He got friendly holding my hand
Well, she got friendly down in the sand
He was sweet, just turned eighteen
Well, she was good, you know what I mean
Summer heat, boy and girl meet
But, uh oh, those summer nights

(Tell me more, tell me more)
(How much dough did he spend?)
(Tell me more, tell me more)
(Could she get me a friend?)

It turned colder; that's where it ends
So I told her we'd still be friends
Then we made our true love vow
Wonder what she's doin' now

Summer dreams ripped at the seams
But, oh, those summer nights

(Tell me more, tell me more)

Neil Diamond - Sweet Caroline

Where it began
I can't begin to knowin'
But then I know it's growin' strong

Was in the spring
And spring became the summer
Who'd have believed you'd come along

Hands, touchin' hands
Reachin' out
Touchin' me
Touchin' you

Sweet Caroline
Good times never seemed so good
I've been inclined
To believe they never would

But now I
Look at the night
And it don't seem so lonely
We fill it up with only two
And when I hurt
Hurtin' runs off my shoulders
How can I hurt when I'm with you

Warm, touchin' warm
Reachin' out
Touchin' me
Touchin' you

Sweet Caroline
Good times never seemed so good
I've been inclined
To believe they never would
Oh, no, no

Sweet Caroline
Good times never seemed so good
I've been inclined
To believe they never would
Sweet Caroline

puuuuure cheese. i listen to this overandoverandover again in times of need, as well as aretha franklin's r-e-s-p-e-c-t and cake's i will survive. can't help but hold my head high after that.
biggrin.gif

reach for the sky and hold your head up high, for tonight and everynight, you're a superstar.
and don't you be afraid, think of all the friends you've made, like any other night you've got your name in lights, you're a superstar.

in a world that gives everything, don't you know that it don't mean a thing at all, at all for a superstar. you gotta find a raindow, tell the world what everyone else knows, don't let them tell you again about life, 'cause you know you're a superstar.

so reach for the sky and hold your head up high, for tonight and everynight you're a superstar. and don't you be afraid, think of all the friends you've made, like any other night you've got your name in lights,
you're a superstar.

everything you are today, is what you want to be. so don't be someone else when you be the best so easily. if you try, and believe, my baby you'll succeed, and your eyes will make you see, you're a superstar.

oh damn. one more.

squint your eyes and look closer
i'm not between you and your ambition
i am a poster girl with no poster
i am thirty-two flavors and then some
and i'm beyond your peripheral vision
so you might want to turn your head
cause someday you're going to get hungry
and eat most of the words you just said

both my parents taught me about good will
and i have done well by their names
just the kindness i've lavished on strangers
is more than i can explain
still there's many who've turned out their porch lights
just so i would think they were not home
and hid in the dark of their windows
til i'd passed and left them alone

and god help you if you are an ugly girl
course too pretty is also your doom
cause everyone harbors a secret hatred
for the prettiest girl in the room
and god help you if you are a pheonix
and you dare to rise up from the ash
a thousand eyes will smolder with jealousy
while you are just flying back

i'm not trying to give my life meaning
by demeaning you
and i would like to state for the record
i did everything that i could do
i'm not saying that i'm a saint
i just don't want to live that way
no, i will never be a saint
but i will always say

squint your eyes and look closer
i'm not between you and your ambition
i am a poster girl with no poster
i am thirty-two flavors and then some
and i'm beyond your peripheral vision
so you might want to turn your head
cause someday you might find you're starving
and eating all of the words you said

For the minute it's Travellin Man by the Mighty Mos Def. Lyrics and all, but you really gotta hear it (obviously...)
It's off DJ Honda's second album.

Intro:
yeah yo yo what time the plane leavin?
ahhh alright, i see you at the airport
*samples of "r-r-r-r-rock on"*

Chorus:
Memories don't live like people do
They always remember you
Whether things are good or bad, its just the memories

Memories don't live like people do-o
Baby don't forget me, I'm a travellin' man
Movin through places, space and time
Gotta lotta things i got to do
God willin' I'm comin back to you
My baby boo

I'm a travellin' man
Movin through places, space and time(space and tiiiime)
Gotta lotta things i got to do
But God willin' I'm comin back to you
Baby boo
I'm leavin

Verse 1:
Well go 'head and leave
The call heard 'round the world from the wives of MC's
These cats is playin all that half a pound
A garment bag we snatch it down
Ain't got the state but we could prob'ly run a blacker town
Scenarios like this is tear jerkers
For the modern MC I ain't a blue collar worker
'Cuz this thing called rhymin' no different from coal minin'
We both on assignment to unearth the diamond
When you start climbin'
And then I start shinin'
You be strugglin' and strivin'
And they think you prime-timin'
Matain and keep silence make note and observation
This confrontation
This is the daily operation
A concentration
Stay focused on my recitation
'Bout to reach my destination with the balls of hesitation
Baby make the preperation 'cuz this ain't no recreation
This is Pro Ball!
And we lettin you know y'all
At the show y'all
Doin' this for dough y'all
Get the phone call
And I'm ready to blow y'all
'Bout to go y'all
Been a pleasure to know y'all
And I'm lettin' you know that...

Chorus:
Memories don't live like people do
They always remember you
Wether things are good or bad, its just the memories

Memories don't live like people do-o
Baby don't forget me, I'm a travellin' man
Movin through places, space and time
Gotta lotta things i got to do
G-d willin I'm comin back to you
My baby boo

I'm a travellin' man
Movin through places, space and time(space and tiiiime)
Gotta lotta things i got to do
But in time I'm comin back to you
Baby boo
I'm leavin

Verse 2:
But God willin' I'll be back home
To drop these heavy ass bags up off my backbone
Around the world with a catalog of rap songs
My baby girl is walkin, been away for that long
But no you haven't well least that's how it seem to me
My home town is like a whole different scenery
The old timers on the stoop leaning leisurely
The new jacks up in the bar smokin greenery
Easily taken for granted when you up in it but its sweet scented
When you been down for a minute
Move around city damage
Break it down with the vintage
The innovative
Classical B-Boy image
Collect the winners
'Cuz thats the reason that we came here
This thing is not a game here
The fortune not the fame here
From New York to the Cakalaks
Cali in the Cadillacs
Chicago know we innovate
Infiltrate Virginia State
DC make me stimulate
Philly know we penetrate
Georgia make us generate
Like suns as they create the pace
They celebrate to my jams in foreign lands
Even your mans in Japan know who I am
Minasan, like everybody out in Nippon
Say ichiban, may God have well where your getting from
Phenomenom, 'scuse me that's a phone call
Its the show y'all
Tryin' to get this dough y'all
'Bout to blow y'all
Been a pleasure to know y'all
And I'm lettin' you know that...

Chorus:
Memories don't live like people do
They always remember you
Wether things are good or bad, its just the memories

Memories don't live like people do-o
Baby don't forget me, I'm a travellin' man
Movin through places, space and time
Gotta lotta things i got to do
But in time I'm comin back to you
My baby boo

I'm a travellin' man
Movin through places, space and time(space and tiiiime)
Gotta lotta things i got to do
But G-d willin I'm comin back to you
Back to you

I'm leeaaavvvvinnn'!
I'll be back to you
I'm leeaaavvvvinnn'!
I'll be back to you

All over the world we go
DC all over the world we go
VA all over the world we go
The ?Cakalaks? all over the world we go
London all over the world we go
Japan we go over the world we go
Paris we go over the world we go

Today - by Smashing Pumpkins

Today is the greatest
Day I've ever known
Can't live for tomorrow,
Tomorrow's much too long
I'll burn my eyes out
Before I get out

I wanted more
Than life could ever grant me
Bored by the chore
Of saving face

Today is the greatest
Day I've ever known
Can't wait for tomorrow
I might not have that long
I'll tear my heart out
Before I get out

Pink ribbon scars
That never forget
I tried so hard
To cleanse these regrets
My angel wings
Were bruised and restrained
My belly stings

Today is
Today is
Today is
The greatest day

I want to turn you on
I want to turn you on
I want to turn you on
I want to turn you

Today is the greatest
Today is the greatest day
Today is the greatest day
That I have ever really known

"Just My Imagination" - Cranberries

There was a game we used to play
We would hit the town on Friday night
And stay in bed until Sunday
We used to be so free
We were living for the love we had and
Living not for reality

It was just my imagination [x3]

There was a time I used to pray
I have always kept my faith in love
It's the greatest thing from the man above
The game I used to play
I've always put my cards upon the table
Let it never be said that I'd be unstable

It was just my imagination [x3]

There is a game I like to play
I like to hit the town on Friday night
And stay in bed until Sunday
We'll always be this free
We will be living for the love we have
Living not for reality

It's not my imagination [x3]
Not my [x18]

Muh tunes, from the moment I first heard them:

If I should die this very moment
I wouldn't fear
For I've never known completeness
Like being here
Wrapped in the warmth of you
Loving every breath of you
Still in my heart this moment
Or it might burst
Could we stay right here
Until the end of time until the earth stops turning
Wanna love you until the seas run dry
I've found the one I've waited for

All this time I've loved you
And never known your face
All this time I've missed you
And searched this human race
Here is true peace
Here my heart knows calm
Safe in your soul
Bathed in your sighs
Wanna stay right here
Until the end of time
'Til the earth stops turning
Gonna love you until the seas run dry
I've found the one I've waited for

The one I've waited for

All I've known
All I've done
All I've felt was leading to this
All I've known
All I've done
All I've felt was leading to this
Wanna stay right here
'Til the end of time 'till the earth stops turning
I'm gonna love you till the seas run dry
I've found the one I've waited for
The one I've waited for
The one I've waited for

Wanna stay right here
'Til the end of time 'till the earth stops turning
I'm gonna love you till the seas run dry
I've found the one I've waited for
The one I've waited for
The one I've waited for

^^^Lamb - Gorecki

Why do I feel so alone in a crowd of people I know?
Is it wrong to feel so insecure and so unappealing?
Why walk around in disguise with a fake grin on my face?
What would it prove?
What would I gain?
I'd still feel so out of place.

Damned if I do
Damned if I don't
But I won't turn out like you

Midlife crisis at the age of 22, who knew?
I need some answers cross the street
And down the avenue I stopped
For the woman and paid five bucks
Got my palm read and she said:
"You shouldn't be smiling boy,
This life line says you're already dead."

Just keep on moving forward never turning back.
But with every step ahead I take they pull me two steps back.
They pull me two steps back.

Damned if I do
Damned if I don't
But I won't turn out like you

^^^LOA - Damned if I do

If tomorrow never shows
I want you all to know
That I loved you all, you're beautiful
And I had myself a ball

I've wasted so much precious time
Been skating along these fine lines
Now these weeds have grown where the sun once shown
And my life has passed me by

And my life has passed me by
I don't know why
I keep searching for something that I never found
While these weeds get deeper as I turn around
And time grows older and I've grown colder
So long has passed that I forgot to count

These weeds have grown where the sun once shown
And I can feel it

Today I cut off all the ties
Been led blind for all this time
But somewhere in between the lies
Are the hearts and minds of those who tried

And although I've heard your lies...
I keep searching for something that I never found
While these weeds get deeper as I turn around
And time grows older and I've grown colder
So long has passed that I forgot to count

These weeds have grown where the sun once shown
And I can feel it

This space between us...

She gets a lot of flack but no one ever seems to listen to her actual lyrics. She's a great songwriter and producer.

This track speaks volumes of what I'm going through right now:

Turn Off the Light

It’s getting so lonely inside this bed
Don’t know if I should lick my wounds or say 'woe is me' instead
And there’s an aching inside my head
It’s telling me you're better off alone

But after midnight
Morning will come
And the day will see
If you will get some

Chorus:
They say that girl ya know she act too tough tough tough
Well it’s 'til I turn off the light, turn off the light
They say that girl you know she act so rough rough rough
Well it’s 'til I turn off the light, turn off the light
And I say follow me follow me follow me down down down down
'Til you see all my dreams
Not everything in this magical world is quite what it seems

I looked above the other day
Cuz I think I’m good and ready for a change
I live my life by the moon
If it’s high play it low, if it’s harvest go slow and if it’s full, then go

But after midnight
Morning will come
And the day will see, yeah
If you’re gonna get some

I’m searching for things that I just cannot see
Why don’t you don’t you don’t you come and be with me
I pretend to be cool with me,
want to believe that I can do it on my own without my heart on my sleeve

I’m running, I’m running, catch up with me life
Where is the love that I’m looking to find
It’s all in me, can’t you see
Why can't you, why can’t you see it’s all in me?

Where is your logic (turn off the light, turn off the light)
Who do you need (turn off the light, turn off the light)

And I say follow me follow me follow me down down down
'Til you see all my dreams
Not everything in this magical world is quite what it seems

Follow me follow me down down down down
I do not need I do not need nobody (turn off the light, turn off the light)

Where is your logic
Who do you need
Where can you turn...

DEAD FROM THE WAIST DOWN

The sun is shining
We should be making hay
But we're dead from the waist down
Like in Californ-i-a

Victory is empty
There are lessons in defeat
But we're dead from the waist down
We are sleeping on our feet

We stole the songs from birds in trees
Bought us time on easy street
Now our paths they never meet

We chose to court and flatter greed
Ego disposability
I caught a glimpse and it's not me

Make hay not war
Make hay not war
Make hay not war
Or else we're done for
When we're D from the W down

There's no contracts binding
No bad scene beyond repair
But when you're dead from the waist down
You're too far gone to even care

We stole the songs from birds in trees
Bought us time on easy street
Now our paths they never meet

We chose to court and flatter greed
Ego disposability
I caught a glimpse and it's not me

Make hay not war
Make hay not war
Make hay not war
Or else we're done for
When we're D from the W down

Make hay not war
Make hay not war
Make hay not war
Or else we're done for
When we're D from the W down

When we're D from the W down
When we're D from the W down

D from the W down
D from the W down

Wow, alot of really awesome shit people have posted... I like some of those songs alot...

I guess my pick would be comfortably numb by floyd... though I do know what the song is actually about.. in my interpretation it fits me quite nicely at the momment...

(to help you out, my ideas from listening to the song come alot from the themes in the movie)

An ambient b-side that sounds like it was produced under water. I love this song so much:

Has To Be

Breathe in, breathe out
I say a little prayer
How the gods above
Could be so unfair

Chorus:

I know there's someone out there
Waiting for me
There must be someone out there
There just has to be

Go on, go on
Don't sit there like a fool
You've graduated from
A different kind of school

(chorus, repeat)

I should be glad that I'm alive
It could have been much worse
I might have never loved at all
And never known what I am worth

How the gods above
Could be so unfair

I'm not slagging the thread.

but I find it really hard to get a grasp of what the song is like, by reading the lyrics.

they don't have any musical atributes to them, so the whole song part of it is lost, which is the intention of the thread really.

I tried to read some...it's just hard to follow...

carry on!

I've been listening to Tori Amos' "Strange Little Girls" so I would have to use this one...

Rattlesnakes - by Lloyd Cold

Jodie wears a hat although it hasn't rained or six days
She says a girl needs a gun these days
hey on account of all the rattlesnakes
She looks like Eve Marie Saint in On The Waterfront
She reads Simone de Beauvoir in her American circumstance
She's less than sure if her heart has come to stay in San Jose
And her neverborn child still haunts her
as she speeds down the freeway
As she tries her luck with the traffic police
out of boredom more than spite
She never finds no trouble, she tries too hard
She's obvious despite herself
She looks like Eve Marie Saint in On The Waterfront
She says all she needs is therapy yeah
All you need is, love is all you need
Jodie never sleeps 'cause there are always needles in the hay
She says that a girl needs a gun these days
hey on account of all the rattlesnakes
She looks like Eve Marie Saint in On The Waterfront
As she reads Simone de Beauvoir in her American circumstance
Her heart, heart's like crazy paving
Upside down and back to front
She says ooh, it's so hard to love
When love was your great disappointment

Bjork - It's Not Up To You

I wake up
And the day feels
Broken
I tilt my head
I'm trying to get an angle
'Cause the evening
I've always longed for
It could still happen

How do I master
The perfect day
Six glasses of water
Seven phonecalls

If you leave it alone
It might just happen
Anyway

It's not up to you
Oh it never really was
It's not up to you
Oh it never really was
It's not up to you
Well it never really was
It's not up to you

If you wake up
And the day feels
Ah broken
Just lean into the crack
(Just lean into the crack)
And it will tremble
Ever so nicely
Notice
How it sparkles
Down there

I can decide
What I give
But it's not up to me
What I get given
Unthinkable surprises
About to happen
But what they are

It's not up to you
Well it never really was
It's not up to you
Oh it never really was
It's not up to you
Oh it never really was
It's not up to you
Oh, me, share
It's not up to you
It's not up to you
Oh, it never really was
It's not up to you
Well, it never really was
It's not up to you
It's not up to you
It's not up to you
It's not up to you

There's too much
Clinging
To peak
There's too much
Pressure

If anyone can post the lyrics of "State of Mind" by Goldie, please do it for me. I can't find them.
