What are you having for dinner?

Anybody ever make homemade gnocchi? I can read online how to make it but I want some first-hand accounts on do's & don'ts. I'm referring to a (russet) potato and cheese gnocchi.

Use a starchy potato yukon gold and press thru a ricer... Don't overmix the dough or it will get tough... They are fairly easy to make... I've made it a few times...

Tonight I'm making toad in the hole with some farmer's sausage I got at a butcher in Norwood (about 30kms East of peterborough) Usually I use bacon fat for the yorkshire pudding, but today I'm going to use duck fat since I've had a pot of confit in the oven all day. No sense in melting bacon fat when I've already got a full pot of hot duck fat!

Carrot soup with a hint of nutmeg will be the first course and constitute the vegetable portion of tonight's dinner.

uh oh, are you OK kat? FWIW, I'm only at the shop on Saturdays now and as of the end of the year I officially won't be half-owner of the shop as I've taken a new job caring for my son. Or being a housewife as my dad says.

So, being the good housewife I am last night I made pan roasted chicken breasts, brussels sprouts au gratin and rice pilaf flavoured with cinnamon and cardamom. I made apple crisp too, but was too full to eat any so that's breakfast for the next couple of days.

Today I've started making a 10000 calorie cake (9370 actually) for my son's first birthday party on Sunday. I'm going to make tortiere for dinner tonight, unless I don't have time to make a crust in which case I'm going to make boring old shepherd's pie.

Not much to explain! There's a full pound of chocolate in the frosting so that might have something to do with it! :p

The recipe says it serves 10 to 12, but in reality, especially after a big dinner I'd say it serves more like 15-20.

mmmmm chocolate. For both my girls first birthdays I did banana cake - Maya's was a daisy and bug-shaped cupcakes, Elissa got caterpillars!

I think I've got Maya's planned out for this year - I saw this idea where you make a bowl shaped cake and then cover it in marshmallows to make an igloo!

Dinner has been nothing special lately as we've all been sick off and on - last night was spagettini with meat sauce (homemade but from freezer), yesterday was nicholyn farms sausage, rice and green beans and the day before was habitant french canadian pea soup and crusty bread. That soup is totally one of my comfort foods LOL.

Fancy cakes sk8! I am making my cake in the shape of a circle when viewed from the top, but a square when viewed from the side. Yes, a cylinder. with a 1 on the top. I'm pretty sure the fact that its got chocolate and sugar in it will maintain his interest! I might have to start thinking about fancy shapes for later years though, sounds fun!

Operation: Tourtiere wasn't as successful as I'd hoped. First time making it and I wanted to use the amount of meat I'd already thawed... so I made it deep dish in a springform pan. The crust turned out fantastic and it looked awesome, until I cut into it and it was way too runny (which in turn made the bottom crust soggy). Oh well, try again next time!

LOL!! I agree - you could make it just a random blob of chocolate and sugar and he'd probably be thrilled.

I think my favourite part of the birthdays is making them a special cake. It got harder when Elissa decided she didn't like cake. So far we've had:

Elissa:
Caterpillars (banana cake)
Butterfly (Vanilla ice cream)
Ladybugs (raspberry sorbet coated vanilla ice cream)
Beach (Jello)
Mermaid Seashore (Jello)

Maya:
Daisy and bug cupcakes (banana cake)
Train (1 car chocolate with strawberry jam, 1 car vanilla with apple butter, 1 car jello with sharks)

I love the train idea! Especially the jello shark car!

I should make one of those boob cakes, but it'll be totally appropriate 'cause he's one and that's one of his favourite things.

The train was so easy too - just made cake in loaf pans, decorated them and added oreo wheels!

I'll post a pic of it when I get home.

soup, and some things that were supposed to be tea biscuits or something, they tasted like flour and stuck to my mouth, they were also dropped on the flour before they were put in the oven. I did not eat them.
