Weekly Jungle Nights???

Well, Turbo is no more, Syrous is on hold, Whisky Saigon (does anyone even go?).....where are all the jungle nights? This summer there were a million to choose from a week, now they have all disappeared. Are Flava Saturdays the only night? SOOOO what's going on?

starting in the new year there should be some new ones...

I know that there will be a DnB night on Thursdays at the Living Room starting in January... and Syrous should have a new night/venue soon as well..

Think of how few jungle nights there are in the clubs right now then consider what someone under 19, like myself, must be going through...

I'm seriously hurting!!!

I'm also begining to wonder why the hell I didn't just stay in the UK when I had the chance. As far as my drum&bass addiction is concerned, it feels like I've come back to nothing.

Nothing on Friday's it seems...hmmm..that sucks. This would probably be a good time for someone to step-up and claim the Friday night Jungle title. hhmmmmm....

Well, I guess it's Phat Beat Friday's for me! Never been to NV before, how is it??

The Syrous night is starting up on December 21st, so they'll reclaim Friday nights again. From what I hear, it's going to be better than before too, so don't worry.

how will it be better than before?? It was an alright night, but

1)it was too expensive
2)the crowd was 80% knobs and thugs

they kinda have to change these two things to make it better.....it was definitely never a question of talent, or even venue....mainly crowd.

How do you change a crowd??

No offense taken, nebu kad, I'm not involved with Syrous, I just support them. I was a rotating resident at Turbo, but I had nothing to do with the night.

I think the new night will address those concerns. I'll wait for Syrous to make the announcements though.

And you change a crowd by changing how you approach the night. We need to stop relying on imported UK headliners, and focus on local talent. I know it's been said a million times before, but I think it will really happen this time. If some of the patrons are lost in the process, so be it. As you said, a lot of them are "knobs and thugs" anyway, so it's no big loss. The crowd will rebuild around local support. Toronto will finally be an independent city, not an extension of the UK.

You let ME in.

My level of frustration with this is through the roof right about now. There is next to nothing junglewise in this city for an 18 year old. (A city that is selfproclaimed as being the drum&bass capital of North America??)

I don't understand why people seem to have this misconception that opening the door to someone like myself would result in a mass influx of those GhettoTrashTryHardWannabeJunglistThugs. Judging by Syrous fridays it sounds like the 19+ crowd is already plagued with them.

Age does not equal maturity.

The only thing that putting age restrictions on drum&bass events is effectively doing is shutting out the future of this city's scene.

Amy, you're right that age does not equal maturity. Unfortunately, it's a lot harder to make a profit with an all ages crowd because of the law. In order for a club to allow smoking in Toronto, it must be strictly 19+, or have a completely separated smoking room. Therefore, clubs are 19+, because they can't shut out all the smokers or they'll simply go somewhere else.

Also, however much you want to deny it or hope otherwise, the bottom line is all about the money. A club like Turbo makes far more money from bar sales than they do from ticket sales. So a 19+ night with only 200 people will still generate more revenue than an all ages night with 500 people who don't drink.

Sad but true.

i don't know if kingston has different by- laws than TO or just sketchier clubs, but we have all ages events were you can smoke and drink (you have to be 19+ to drink)

The laws are different in all cities. I'm pretty sure in Kitchener/Waterloo/Cambridge, you can't smoke ANYWHERE, even if it's 19+.

Smoking laws are cracking down!

i remember a time when there was a drum and bass night almost every single day of the week.

sunday = nasa, milanos, up & down
monday = caddy's night @ the comfort zone, as well as chixdigit
tuesday = funglejunk
wednesday = limelight
thursday = urban unit had a night briefly iirc @ the comfort zone...the bottom line kru also had a night....briefly. there was a ragga night @ the runyx (on dundas) for a short time..and of course...nasa.
friday = beat junkie/lifeforce fridays (system and then turbo)
saturday = guaranteed big party with headliner.

There's jungle at the Audiowerks with the HighRollaz on thursday nights, they also have a monthly there the last Saturday of every month. After Dec. they're moving to a nicer location directly West of the limelight, I can't remember what it's called. Small crowd (obviously) 19+, never met an asshoel there and that ain't no intelligent shit they're playing there, it's righteous, and mean, pure dirty basslines. There's Drum n' Bass there on Wednesdays, I think that's the Ganja Smile guys, very tiny crowd, Pablo, DJ Spinz I think he is, has a night for his record label BlaydRunner on the last Friday of every month. There's Jungle as Whiskey Saigon on Fridays along with a whole bunch of other stuff, breaks and so on or at least there was for a couple of weeks. I guess Wed. System is still on. and of course Milano's.
