Web Hosting Company Recommendations

Hey All,

Putting together a website which may require a decent amount of bandwidth(at least 2,000 gigs, but if i can get more for a good price, booyah).

I'd like at least 2 Domain names thrown in, and at least 500 gigs of disk space for content.

I've been looking at Netfirms, but would prefer a bit more drive space for the price.

I'd like to spend as little as possible, at least until things get going.

Any and all recommendations are supremely welcome!

Cheers!

Dan
PS- and no, its not a porn site. :p

500 Gigs is alot of space. If you're not concerned with website speed (not download speed, but the speed it takes to load pages) and could settle for like 98% uptime then dreamhost has some ridiculously oversold plans that could accomodate that.

The problem is that lots of hosts offer unlimited disk space and bandwidth for cheap (netfirms looks like this), but they do so by loading each server with hundreds of sites (most of which never use their allocations which is how they can offer these prices.) The result is that your web server is CPU and memory starved so unless it's serving static pages, it can get very slow. You will also be sharing the pipe.

http://www.canaca.com were okay, that's what i used to host with. They have plans that meet your needs for cheap but again, i got download speeds of about 230kb/s off them for big files, but my site ran like a dog (and i got no traffic!).

If this is some sort of business then you might be better off looking at getting your own managed server, and a guaranteed pipe (but now your monthly costs increase 10-20x) There are places like http://www.layeredtech.com which will setup a whole server for you and you can put whatever you want on it, or you can just buy your own, set it up, and send it to a datacenter.

Generally, for fun sites that arent getting monster traffic, plans like dreamhost and canaca are probably okay. If you expect to make money on and want to provide quality of service then you need to break out the real bank. That being said, there's no harm in setting up on a monthly plan and just switching hosts if you outgrow them. Your liability is like 14.95. Just make sure that if you register a domain name through them that they don't keep control over it. It sounds like your names are already registered with a 3rd party so you have control over where it points, that's good.

If you see a deal that looks good, head over to http://www.webhostingtalk.com and do a search on them. People are whiners but you will get a pretty good idea of what kind of crap the host is pulling after poring through some of the posts.

Mediatemple.

I've been with them for a while. Amazing service. Amazing upload and download speeds. Downtime is almost nil and good pricing.

Wouter and I have been with Dreamhost since 1998, no complaints (yet).

I've been with Dreamhost for 2 years now. No problems from my corner either.

canaca started using my domain to send out spam emails.. tried contacting customer support a number of times via phone & email.. never heard a thing back - so I moved my domain from their servers - and the 200+ pieces of email I was getting returned stopped being sent.. would not suggest them to anyone looking for a decent hosting company - or ever need any support whatsoever.

tried dreamhost on the recommendations of a few others here - had constant issues with uptime, site being unavailable due to the shared hosting scheme they have in place.. cheap beyond cheap.. but if your site is mission critical and doing anything other than serving static pages.. i'd be careful

haha i bet their sysadmin fucked up the mailserver config and allowed universal relaying. I'm all about VPS now, that way if something like that happens i only have myself to blame, however, i'm pro so it wont (j/k)
