Found this on youtube:

We Are The World

loved this as a kid. figured there must be others like me and thought i'd share.

my dad even rented the documentary of the making of "We Are the World". All i remember is that Cyndi Lauper had to take off most of her jewelery because it was making too much noise during the recording.

Which it's pretty ironic considering mining exploits for Gold and Diamonds have nurtured their fair share of African strife and atrocities. I guess that's symptomatic of the kind of 'awareness' of such issues in the 80's. "If we give them enough money, they will be better.. and stuff"

An aside:
"We Fuck The World"

Indeed. Star power used for a convenient cause is just an empty gesture in my books. They raised money for relief, but what can be said about how much extra fame & publicity it brought to those involved?

That 'We fuck the World' reminds me of another great relic of the 80's.

Not to mention the bullshit lyrics. Although it's not nearly as pukeoriffic as the Band Aid Do they know it's Christmas lyrics. There's just so much wrong and so much fucking racism/oppression/ignorance/etc in this. Re-reading this I have to remind myself that the message isn't actualy a parody despite reading like one.

Do they know it's Christmas?
It's Christmastime,
there's no need to be afraid
At Christmastime,
we let in light and we banish shade
And in our world of plenty
we can spread a smile of joy
Throw your arms around the world
at Christmastime

But say a prayer,
pray for the other ones
At Christmastime it's hard,
but when you're having fun
There's a world outside your window,
and it's a world of dread and fear
Where the only water flowing
is the bitter sting of tears
And the Christmas bells that ring there
are the clanging chimes of doom
Well tonight thank God it's them
instead of you

And there won't be snow in Africa this Christmastime
The greatest gift they'll get this year is life(Oooh)
Where nothing ever grows
No rain or rivers flow
Do they know it's Christmastime at all?

Here's to you raise a glass for everyone
Here's to them underneath that burning sun
Do they know it's Christmastime at all?

Feed the world
Feed the world
Feed the world
Let them know it's Christmastime again

Feed the world
Let them know it's Christmastime again
