I think killing animals for consumption is alright, but animal cruelty is different. Skining a cat live if the most horrible thing to do. I agree that they should be punished, but 10 months in jail? That's a little too much I think. It's only a cat.
I agree that animals should have rights, but where do we draw distinctions. When I was younger I used to break off the wings of flies and put them on a hot stove. Is that animal cruelty then? Should I be put into a jail cell for that? Or do we place sentences according to the cognitive abilities of the animals? Higher cognition = more jail time? If we do serve sentences for animal cruelty I think it should all be the same. We're all animals, and a cat is just as an animal as a human being is, therefore one should get the same sentence for cat cruelty as if it was a person.
