Apparantly they were doing some demolition worked at the Uptown theatre and a wall gave way.

There was an ESL school next door that took the brunt of the impact apparantly.

A frightening scene gripped the Yonge and Bloor area on Monday morning.

That’s where the Uptown Theatre, which was under demolition, collapsed. And reports say that a number of adjacent buildings were damaged in the incident. One of them is thought to be a a private school called the Yorkville English Academy where as many as five students could be trapped.

Paramedics were rushing to the scene just before 11am.

They chose to demolish the building because it was too expensive to retrofit it with handicapped access to all areas of the building.

The ironic thing is that in the process they might have caused several people to become handicapped .

Cheers ... Ian :)

Not that a handicapped person couldn't go see a film that they were showing elsewhere.

My grandmother used to go there back in the 20's. A piece of our history lost.

I Just walked by there yesterday and we were conversing about what the plans may be for that theatre.

We were wondering if it was considered historic? They appeared to have gutted it pretty severely, but seemed to be keeping most of the support walls / ceilings..

They had the councillor for the area (Kyle Rae? something) talking earlier. He said the theatre had been gutted and renovated so often it no longer was really classified as a historic site.

He also mentioned that the owner of the building expressed concerns yesterday about the way the demolition was being done.
