UP - new Pixar flick

I like that one of the protagonists (the boy scout) is obviously asian-american. I think this demographic has been overlooked or imagined too poorly for far too long. He looks like how a fat little asian kid should look like, how I picture KMW as a child... they did a good job on him.

and his voice is cute.

I think Disney's on some kind of cartoon affirmative action kick. This year they're also introducing their first african-american princess.

I find that too many of the newer animated movies get too caught up in throwing star-power behind the voices. Really, I don't care of Lindsay Lohan is the voice of a character, or Raymond, or Jim Carrey, or Jack Black - if anything I find that having famous people voice the characters, then having the characters mimic the people they are voicing is more distracting than anything.

Animation is a great opportunity to get drawn into the stories/characters in them and not get sucked into the "Celebrity" behind the character.

I think one of the only exceptions for me was Ellen Degeneres in Finding Nemo.

And Robin Williams as the Genie in Aladdin! They were able to create different scenes depending on the direction of the jokes he wanted to include in the script, but that wasn't pixar.

yup, if dreamworks spent more money developing a great story/script, and less money hiring will smith/jim carrey/mike myers, then maybe they could compete. if they were smart, they would throw bucketloads of cash at brad bird and/or andrew stanton.

pixar's done its share of celebrity voices too, including owen wilson and paul newman in CARS, tom hanks and that home improvement guy in TOY STORY, et al, but their usage of celebrity voices is much less distracting.

pixar uses celebrity actors to fit the character, while dreamworks makes the characters to fit the actor. at least that's how it seems to me.

disney's always tried to cater to other ethnicities, as seen in ALADDIN, MULAN and POCAHONTAS, although they often get blamed for "honkifying" those characters.

correction: this would be disney's first *animated* black princess. apparently, by using the word "animated", they get to break barriers twice.

I'm gonna skip the 3D until I can get some weed brownies together for a second viewing. I'm fine with the digital awesomeness of AMC for now.

it's playing in 3D at AMC. the new 3D technology is far superior to the IMAX version, and it's not limited to IMAX screens.

unfortunately, they are playing UP in auditorium 24 at AMC, which is not their best.

apparently, they are saving their two best auditoriums (#6 and #7) for STAR TREK and DRAG ME TO HELL.

go figure.

Wait, is Up in 3D in EVERY theatre? Man, it's the future.

apparently, you need a special projector to show the new 3D movies. only two auditoriums have it at AMC. UP is being shown in the smaller of the two, because they want to keep STAR TREK in the bigger theatre.

we saw MONSTERS vs. ALIENS in 3D at AMC and it's pretty damn impressive compared to the previous 3D technology.

I saw MONSTERS vs. ALIENS in IMAX and it was also unbelievably impressive. Is Up only playing in 3D? Definitely will see what it looks like if so.

I'm shocked with Cars 2, it's bottom of the Pixar pile for me....I would have thought Incredibles 2 would be close on the radar, especially since they quasi-teased it with the baby at the end of 1.

I'm not - while cars wasn't their best movie it was certainly one of the most popular with kids. The marketing and toys from that are still going really strong, it doesn't surprise me in the least that they are bringing out a sequel.

I'm thinking maybe UP might be our first movie in a theatre with Elissa - how would it be for an almost 4 year old?

It sounds like it might get kind of emotional sk8, but I'm sure it's fine.

Up is magnificent, a beautifully executed story about love, friendship, obsession and what it really means to go on an adventure. It is an incredibly emotional tale that will get your average moviegoer to cry no less than twice, but possibly a third or fourth time if you’re prone towards crying in films. Not at all subtle in its attempts to be a tear jerker, it plays upon the notion of familial attachments ranging from a husband’s pining for his wife, a boy’s desire for a father and a dog’s love for his master.

Actually the whole review doesn't have any spoilers if you want to look at it:

Review with Hardly Any Spoilers

UP is an excellent film. really well thought-out and executed, with some very memorable characters.

it is not, however, at quite the same level as pixar *masterpieces* like WALL-E, THE INCREDIBLES, RATATOUILLE and MONSTER'S INC. almost, but not quite.

many of the funniest moments were spoiled by commercials and previews, unfortunately, but that happens all too often these days.

it is a real tear-jerker at times, especially in the opening 10 minute montage where they show the entire life of the old dude leading up to the start of the movie. this entire sequence is beautiful.

bottom line: everyone should go see this movie. but don't expect it to be pixar's best movie ever, as some of the more retarded critics have claimed.

flashy - the 3D is really not a major factor in this movie, and not worth the hassle of wearing the glasses for 1.7 hours. if i saw this again, i would opt for the regular 2D version. (you can watch much of it without the glasses - and i did, occasionally, when i wanted to give my eyes a break - as many scenes have no 3D at all.)

kate - the movie would be fine for an almost 4 year old. the story is easy to follow and the characters would be hilarious for kids that age.

I'm bringing Owen (2.5 years) to this on Monday afternoon. If he can sit through Cars then he can sit through this.

First movie ever! :) If you don't count A History of Violence at Movies for Mommie's when he was 1.

Saw it last night and it was great, but not better than Wall-E, as some reviews have been saying. The 3D, while not spectacular, did add a bit to the film for me. It was very subtle, but it made the film seem like a diorama come to life - not shoehorned 'omg its in my face' as many 3D movies seem to be.

The opening scenes were brilliantly done. They do a great job of developing the main characters and there are some refreshing new takes on Disneys traditional familial relationships. The animal characters are also really good and restrained enough that they don't ever fall into Jar Jar Binks territory.

Great movie with less of a 'message' than Wall-E, but with more/better character development. 9/10

Just got back. Didn't bother with the 3D. This moving is excellent. I'd say it's top 3 Pixar for me. Wall-E, Incredibles and Up top my list. Not sure what order.

See this.

eh, it was ok.
not the best of pixar, though it had the chance to be.
the character development with the old man and his relationship with the chubby asian kid was excellent.

unfortunately the dogs flying airplanes by biting on bone chew-toys really blew it for me.
i hold pixar to a higher standard of story telling than such trite crap.

we saw the 2d version rather than bothering with the glasses and hassle.
