I hate a wicked time at this party...

although, a friend of mine went nuts for a while...that was weird.

I personally liked the weird little yellow room in the basement by the second room...pure ghetto.

I had a great time. I was expecting a little more of a "live" performance from nuclear ramjet though.

Who was that on before them? was the guy with the dreads quivering virgin? I thought they were fucking great.

my only complaint is that Satori was playing in that closet they were calling a second room. Party after party this man consistently receives the best reviews, and yet for some reason he gets stuck playing for the coat check line. That's just not right.

hmmmm,

got there about 1:30, and i had a little trouble catching up with the vibe of the party. was somewhat disgusted by the smell in there, did somebody piss on the dancefloor? but i got over it or got used to it. there were too many flailing goa-hippies in the crowd. people who dance with 'windmill action arms' should be confined to a corner where they can only smack each other.

caught the end of dread guy, he was pretty good. got me moving.

nuclear ramjet started way, way, way, way too slow and it kind of nuked what energy i had left. my feeling is that at 2 am, the party should be in full swing, we do not need a half hour of chirps and tweaks to build things up. they were pretty good by the time they got going but by then i was already feeling that i'd be happier elsewhere and i acted on that.

good to see pete. i spotted basic and mcbee but didn't say hi because i'm an asocial jerk.
wink.gif

bottom line, wasn't worth the money because i didn't have the energy by the time i got there, but that was my problem not the party's.

What a party!

This was everything that I'd hoped for on new years. The same, awesome crowd of psychedelic fiends (including the weirdos. hehe...) and wicked, bad-ass music to shake my ass to.

I too was a little surprised to get there and find Satori spinning in the coat-check lineup (c'mon, that wasn't a "room" at all...) but hopefully they'll put him back in the main room, where he belongs, for the next jam.

The team of Quivering Virgin and ____ (was it jeb?) were pretty good leading up to Nuclear Ramjet. Nuclear Ramjet got started pretty slow but got better towards the end. The real story of this night was whoever was on at the end. If I saw his name elsewhere I'd probably remember it, but damn, this guy had some awesome tracks! Nice way to end the party, even if it did end a little early (6am!), at least I was nice and worked in by then so leaving wasn't too bad of an option.
But even the last guy had his share of dodgy mixes, just something I've grown to ignore at the psychedelic parties (another reason why Satori should be getting more play in the main room with his tight mixing.)

What a nice surprise for Kevin and Sara to show up unexpectedly(!!), Rosey it was nice seeing you too, as brief as our encounter was... hehe.. And Melissa (ms. fit)! So good to see you, I don't see nearly as much of you as I'd like to.

The last DJ on was Senix from France - ya nice tracks for sure! As for the mixing, the set up in that room was fucking crap. The soundsystem wasn't really up to par and there was almost no monitor volume at all. That coupled with the fact that you could only here one channel at a time on the mixer made it quite difficult to mix AT ALL, so that's just the way it goes some times.

All in all, a good night out though.

Peace out,

dam

I have to confer with Dan, here, in that we were promised a completely different sound-system than the one we ended up having to set up ourselves (cannibalizing from the other party upstairs that kindly donated speakers and amps). The shape of the room, as well, is not conducive to sound, and it was a shitty venue. I have to apologize for much of this, as there are very few venues to book on NYE, and we were completely neglected by the resident sound guy - Steve McLeod - who not only didn't provide the gear promised, but didn't show up at all due to personal issues.

Similar things happened in the basement, which should have had 2 more rooms with speakers in each, and although Satori was relegated to the shitty (we did our best to clean and cover) basement, there was little time on the main stage to give out without shortening sets further. Satori's crew (thanks, Evan) were called at 8PM to bring their own tables as our second set never showed up, and we had three DJ's for the second "room" cancel altogether.

To top this off, NR didn't arrive at the venue until 11:45!!! To supplement this problem, the mixer they needed was missing with the rest of the gear and we had to improvise just to allow our headliner to play. The tardiness of their arrival made for shortened sets for everyone afterwards.

Even given these problems, it was a wicked night, and I apologize for the venue/sound problems that we had, and personally apologize to Nick for what happened with his set and the room/gear (3:30-5:00 set for R6 - ok?). I'm so happy that we had the turn-out that we did, and that everyone appeared to have, and that, I think, most of the problems that we had didn't really affect the vibe of the night or the good time that people seemed to have. As for the ending time, we arranged for at least another hour to be held at Area51 without additional cover, so nobody can complain that there wasn't anything to do at 6AM. I promise that next year we'll have a bigger, cleaner, more roomed, nicer smelling, CLEAN and LOUD sounding systemed party in a different venue. We proved with Union that a PsyTrance NYE party is viable and wicked-fun, so there will be a UoT II to look forward to!

Thanks again to all helped make this night happen and all who came and made the effort and fuck-ups well worth it for the good time that I had,

Clay

i'm sure you meant you "had" a good time! laura and i did too. that bit where mike snapped and took off was a bit scarey but all the glove jokes helped lighten the mood. thanks for bringing your friends along, btw
biggrin.gif

wow there were a lot of weird-ass people at the party -- but they were quite entertaining to look at. everyone was friendly, in a sketchy way, except this one bitch in all silver pvc and tacky silver eye make-up that gave me a hard time about after party info.

the goa, was..well...goa, it always takes a bit of time for me to get into it...i don't know how i end up at these sort of parties but i did have a good time, and i'm very grateful that i ran into pete (subsonic) and it was nice to see quirk, twitch, mcbee and basic. best wishes for everyone in the new year!

take care,
melissa

well i'm no 'goa bitch'

so i doubt i can properly review the nite, but i'll try anyways!
heading to this party was part of basic's and mine nye surprise for kevin's friends who didn't think we were coming. parted ways with them at allies and headed off to a second house party with promises to meet up for breakfest the next day! tee hee...we surprised them by arriving at 1:30am...the surprise was great and went off without a hitch, despite dan slipping at allie's and almost ruining it!!

so by the time we arrived we had two nye parties under our belts and were in full party mode!! this was only my second goa party and by no means to i love goa trance. i like my beats full of funk and there was no funk to be found!! however, i can appreciate how everyone there loves it! i came to the party to be with the people i love on nye and help them celebrate and that is waht i did!

at the beginning, i was freezing cold so i couldnt' get into things...once i shook my chill, i was able to get my groove on and dance a bit. i realized i have become a full party princess as the venue grossed me out
frown.gif
especially when some chick who was really fucked up in the chill out room puked on my feet. thats what happens when you are trying to help out a stranger stand up i guess
rolleyes.gif
despite the grossness, i always managed to find a comfy seat thanks to the gentlemanly behaviour of basic! the coatcheck line/room was too bad as i did enjoy the tunes down there. and the last dj who played truly got me dancing...so that is a major feat, getting this breaker chick to dance to goa!! well done!!

all in all, the nite provided me with some AMAZING people watching, some interesting tunes, some wonderful chats, some fucking hilarious laughs and a memory i'll hang on to for awhile.

to the afterparty crew - thanks for the company. can you say 'what a wily ferret?'

to kevin - happy new year hunny. syl is very happy

happy 2002 everyone!

Well first off I have to give serious props to all the organizers (Clay, Hil, BLA, CnJ) for providing a party I could actually look forward to on NYE. I havne't actually enjoyed a party like this since Pleasure Force 94/95.. and boy.. it was quite the time!

Quivering Virgin took the set of the night for me... returning back to his more energetic psy of 99.. his set rocked from beginning to end. Dam, Jebediah and Senix also dropped some heavy beats.

The crowd was nice and mixed up.. and the party itself was dark.. something i've missed for quite a while.

All in all a very impressive NYE party.. everyone I met was having a great time .. already looking forward to UofT II!

Moez- I didn't think you were there when I saw your post for a party review & here it is you want to know how it went! Bring us back some sasktoon berries!

What a nice old school party! I liked descending down to who-knows-where. Sure it was dirty, kids, but it brought back so many memories!

Graver-even if the other rooms were not used for their original intent, it evolved unto a place all it's own! ESPECIALLY with the magic show & Larry the clown who made balloon animals for weed!(I have foggy memories of one guy making him pay- In lieu of my inaction, here it is-Boourns to you fella!)
Sorry to hear about the problems- I think that venue has potential though....

Great to see Kev & Sara- what a surprise you two! Sara now you have to come more often-what you heard(the reason why has been cover already)- wasn't really the best example of Goa -more Psytrance, but I digress...

Cheap Ego- your car didn't really get broke into, did it? If it did- that's it- you can all park here from now own!

All in all, a great night, partially due to Bruno,
smile.gif
- but mostly made by the promoters themselves(specifically bathori aka hilary), who aided us at the last moment by calling us after a frantic 8 pm email that night to confirm our entry to the party!
biggrin.gif
THAT'S classy!

Well, I loved it as always-after being so jaded by the current "scene" this group always pleases, & then some!

Great party. The promoter Hilary was very kind to phone us during the party to sort out our confusion concerning entry. You won't find that kind of dedication often.

The music was good, although the sound quality wasn't. Highlight was Senix; bring this man back! Ramjet were boooring (imhooc).

Decorations and all were cool. A fine array of freaks, geeks, ravers, goths and straight-up wierdos at this event. The clown was interesting. Next we need a midget and a fat bearded lady and we are rolling!

The only disapointment, and a massive one at that, was the relegation of Satori to the basement. This guy could headline anywhere! But graver explained himself so it's cool. But never, ever let this happen again.

It was lovely seeing many familiar faces.

A magazine is doing a spread on Union of Tribes (hopefully Alex will, too) and I need to find some pix for them, electronic or old-fashioned. Does anybody have some that we can use? I can pay for double prints if need be, and if there are any posted on the Interweb already, that'd be perfect!
