Remember these tips:
Retard or mentally unstable wins over the better film.
Epic wins over anything.
American Dream film always win (i.e. "cowboy" attitude, or "America is the bestest place evar", even if it is metaphorical and takes place in Scotland).

Most likely, since his only real competition seems to be Denzel Washington in Training Day. Will Smith is too new, Sean Penn comes across as pandering (to me) and what does it say to you when I can't remember the fifth nominee?

Honestly, it's long overdue for Denzel. I thought he was absolutely brilliant for his work in Malcolm X, Mo Better Blues, Mississippi Masala and is usually the best thing even in a shit movie. But the thing that pisses me off is that he'll get it for something that is not quite up to par. He's very good in Training Day, but he's playing against type, which is too bad, since it's the fact that he's playing a bad guy that gets him recognized, not the fact that he's had a solid body of work.
I'm also hoping that Halle Berry gets the Oscar for Monster's Ball. She did a very touching, full bodied (pun not intended re:topless shot) range of work in that film. She's a great actress and that was one of the more memorable roles I saw this year.

i agree- halle barry has been good in a lot of things, but usually less artistic films. monster's ball is the best movie ive seen in years... i hate movies that 'escape' life, instead of being about it
