tipping your stylist/aesthetician

does anyone know what is the appropriate amount to tip your hairstylist?

your aesthetician?

how about someone that gives you a bikini wax???

and do you give it when you pay at the desk? or give it directly to the person. or do you do it twice?

i always feel awkward giving someone the tip directly.

I always leave it at the desk when I pay everything.
As for the amount...

It's always been a weird situation for me too.

Oh wait I don't go to these! never mind. but if I did, I leave the tip at the front. ;)

mine costs 10 and I'll leave 2$ to 3$ depending on what I thought of the person.

I'm serious this time. I'm a student, I have no money for expensive sissors.

I usually give a tip of $5 for a $15 haircut. I have no problem tipping people like that because they interact with you and give a good cut.

I do have a huge problem though with people who expect tips, especially bar tenders. They make hundreds of dollars in tips per night and their job is to serve people. My job is to be the office bitch and when I do my job well no one tips me.

Tipping Policy

I always employ a "rounding up" method of calculating tips, mostly because I can't be arsed to carry around change. My barber charges $13, so I give him $15 in total.

for the 20 minutes that it takes to wash and cut my hair i pay way too much as it is ... therefore i don't leave a tip.

if i just go to a genero place, and get charged like $15 i usually leave about $2-4 depending on the job.

my barber at tony's place (first canadian place) costs $21 so i give him $25. (the convenience is worth the money)

then i give him another tip by saying either "don't take any wooden nickles" or "don't bet on the horses".

I usually tip about $5 - $10 for a haircut that costs $30.

I also tip $5 to the girl who does my nails and $5 to the girl who waxes my eyebrows.

Anyone know about tipping at a spa (for a massage/facial)? I have a $200 gift certificate that I am planning on using VERY sooN!

The general "rule" is 15-20% for a job well done. Mind you when you are paying $15 for your cut, and you are getting a great cut then you "should" leave more. The tip you leave should represent how you feel about the service you recieved. The better the haircut, leg wax, whatever wax, the better the tip.

I believe the tips are really where they earn their living as they only get a portion of the money that the salon is charging the customer.
