Tiesto goes Techno?

Tiesto goes Techno!?

Most people probably don't know that DJ Tiesto used to play techno music as well a couple of years ago. Only recently he revealed in an intreview with Dutch magazine Bassic Groove that he would love to play a techno set at Awakenings.

Awakenings is the main underground techno event in The Netherlands at the moment. According to a poll in techno-magazine Raveline in Germany, DJ Tiesto was voted #7 in the top 10 of best International DJs by readers of the magazine. DJs such as Rush, Umek, Carl Cox, Richie Hawtin, and Adam Beyer top the list, but he leaves others including Dave Clarke behind him.

Rocco Veenboer of Monumental Productions - the driving force behind Awakenings events and the annual Awakenings festival (that takes place in the same area as the Dance Valley festival) - posted a public poll on his website asking whether or not he should book DJ Tiesto for his festival. Eventually, it was a close call as 54% voted against it. Although it won't happen this year, Rocco adds that he understands why people would voted against the idea. However, he would have like to see Tiesto play on an open air stage, and has therefore decided to post the poll again next year.

Tiesto must be extremely busy these days. In May this year he gives a solo concert/DJ set in Holland with a full orchestra of vocalists and string players for 25,000 people in a football stadium. He has also announced a series of parties in small but intimate venues in Holland over the next few months. During the Winter Music Conference in Miami he will play at Space alongside Mauro Picotto on Wednesday 19th March. On the same night Club Arc from New York throw a techno party on the terrace with Marco Corola, DJ Remy, Bill Patrick and Olivier Berge before Arc raise the roof again at club B.E.D in Miami on Saturday in association with Tortured Records featuring Billy Nasty, Umek, and Rolando.

Do not forget to check out all the other events at Club Space that are bound to be massive! WMC 2003 will feature extra long sets at Space from Danny Tenaglia (Tue), Sasha & John Digweed (Thu), Paul van Dyk (Fri) and Deep Dish (Sat). Besides his gig at Space on the Wednesday, Tiesto will play the Ultra Music Festival on the Saturday, before he leaves the country to play on the other side of the world. The weekend after Miami he's in Helsinki (Finland) to play at Club Colors - a whole crew from MTV will follow Tiesto when he plays there, and a DVD about him will be released by his label Black Hole later this year. wha!?

have you guys heard him mix before!? i haven't either.... 'cause he fucking doesn't! well ok he does, somewhat...neat little transitions here and there, some transferring from one track to the other that requires some beatmatching, but nothing like actually layering.
but he doesn't even compare to the techno gods.

watch, some Tiesto lovin' person will post here saying 'oh yeah!?'... listen to this or something... i've only seen him once before and i was not impressed with his technical skills.

I thought when he first came to TO for Wintergalactic he spun trance on 3 decks. At least, I recall reading a review that stated that (on this site).

I dun wan get inta this now...

I watched him mix once at that u8tv loft thing one night. He had some fancy tricks as far as trance is concerned.

But the one thing I can't understand it the Techno style here. He will not be anything special because that is not his game. Trance is his thing and he should stick with it.

true... he does, however, enjoy jumping on top of tables and waving his arms about... you know, to get the crowd all hyped and shit.

I mistakenly went to see Tiesto(Epic trance not my bag) and on three seperate occasions, he would mix in a teckno track that would absolutely raise the roof off the place. If he came here to play a teckno set, I'd check it out.

yeah i'd like to check him out as well....

as for some of y'all who say he ain't really anything special at mixing.....well Trance (especially Epic trance) isn't that hard to mix at all.....no need to layer much as you woudl in techno........but as far as I know, Tiesto is technically perfect his skills are soo much more honed that many other DJs out there........hearing him play Techno would be very, very special thing.....

you stole the words right out of my mouth...

it's true there's hardly any layering of sounds in trance at all, but minimal mixing is still required... it's usually really short mixes that don't take much skill at all, however i think you guys are really underestimating tiesto's technical skills behind the decks... he's been at the fore front of the game for a long time now folks... i'm pretty sure he knows what he's doing.

When I went to see Tiesto, behind the fluffy crap they calll trance, there were quite a bit of bang'n beats. So......... when I had decided to listen to one of his CDs..........well needlessss to say it went outta my car window @ 120 km/hr. His set that I saw was atleast 1/3 techno-ish-sounding..............which most techheadz would frown upon.......fuck it, I frowned upon it to. But there were moments that actually got me thinking I "MIGHT" just enjoy some of his set.

To stop bababling, I will say that I am quite sure he could drop a sweet techno set.

Yeah, most trance DJs don't do too much in terms of mixing... although there are the few that do one hell of a job. Christopher Lawrence and Mifody come to mind. They mix for extended periods of time with well planned and thought out mixes that actually create a new sound with their records. Their approach to mixing is that of a musician's standpoint. Mixing in key and in rhythm to create something new. There aren't many trance DJs like them, but they are absolutely phenomenal!
I've caught myself saying, "I don't understand whats going on here", while listening to some of their work!
Those two guys are the only trance DJs who have thoroughly impressed me with their skills. Do you guys know any comparable performers?

Cheers,

Jake

what do you mean exactly??? skill makes the difference between a good DJ and an awesome DJ....

in a world full of DJs you need something to set yourself apart from the rest....one of those things is skill....the skill to read the crowd, to mix in a blink of an eye, to know your equipment in and out, etc, etc...
