WoW... An Online RPG Funeral Gets Ambushed

World of Warcraft or otherwise known as simply, WoW is one of the most popular and successful computer games in history. It is a Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game that 6 million people pay $10 -15 per month to play. This type of popularity creates a sample size that is large enough to reflect the forces that control it. In Layman's terms, with this many people playing this online game at any given time human nature tends to get a stronger representation.

The first "reality" check was a bug that caused a plague to outbreak and affect people's characters in certain cases instantly killing any player below a certain level.

The second "reality" check was when this group of Warcraft players otherwise known as a guild interrupted a memorial service. Apparently, some dude dies in real life who is a popular WoW player. The people in the game think it would be nice to have a memorial for the player so they log into his account, take the character to a lake, and set it up for everyone to come pay their respects.

A bunch of dudes decide this would be a great time to ambush everyone so they run over a hill, kill the dead guy's character, and then wipe out everyone who was there to show their respects. They filmed the whole thing and put it on the net for everyone to see.

I think if I was a big enough Wow fan that people thought to have a service for me in the game, I would totally get this and think it weas funny.

Also, doesn't this really represent a realistic view of what would happen in a chaotic world that had warring factions.

This is a great thing to bring up in my Internet and Public Life class.

Love how they have scatman playing during the ambush. That track's a classic.

This has to be one of the best things I've ever seen on the net.

Understanding the dynamic of online RPGs this must've sent off a shockwave of horror, but the real beauty exists in what a reality check it had to evoke in those who wanted to get furious about the incident but suppressed it in favour of maintaining denial of how attached/obsessed they are with the game. Having said that there is indeed a fundamental disrespect at hand here, but if any place existed to carry out such a contemptuous act with trivial consequences, the WoW is it. Every village needs a scoundrel.

Awsome.

I like hearing about the things that happen in this game because of the world it maintains and the things that happen in game. Some of the stuff is rediculous. I think to some extent this game does help us know what waring factions are like. Its ridiculous- but people take this game pretty damn seriously.

I think based on what I could read in the video that in fact the person was both liked, and hated in WoW. They have quotes from him at the start. Seriously jerk quotes. It appears he treated those in other guilds with less than no respect. So although his guild appears to have turned out for his wake on WoW a good portion of the other people he interacted with thought he was a complete dick. So they got together and attacked his wake in a final act of revenge.

I could be wrong. But from the way it's presented and from what I can read that is the case. In which case, this is hardly suprises me that this could occur inside a gaming environment.

made me snicker and giggle and hoo-ah as the carnage ensued. I loved that inside-guy's comment "nice day for a funeral..."(paraphr.) while he's standing in line to pay his respects... BY KILLING THE DEAD GUY!

It's so awesome.

I read that one time in everquest the guy who wrote the game was having some kind of big assembly and forgot to put his invulerability on, so some dude just up and killed him in front of the whole server.
