If you like the beatnik movement, check out City Lights Bookstore (261 Columbus Ave). There's a nice scuzzy bar right beside it.

Or check out Lombard Street

I took a double decker bus tour that where you could jump on/off... and found it to be a great way to get a cheap overview of the city on my first day. The tour guide was hilarious and was a great resource for recos on places to explore further. Also, they had no issues with us drinking beers so that made it even better.

The shopping down in Haight Ashbury was really good.

If you do Alcatraz, do it first thing in the morning on the first boat. Ignore the Ranger's speech or wait at the bottom of the hill and walk up as soon as he's done and you'll be the first ones in the cell block and you can do it quick without other people showing up in any of your pictures. I liked Alcatraz but some people see it as waste of time so if you do it first thing and get out quick you can be back on land at like 11am and then cruise down to the Wharf.

go for dinner at Range. the food is good, cocktails are great, atmosphere is nice, and the bill is easy on the wallet.

eat a burrito in the Mission District and check out all the cool murals in the alleys.

At the pier, your can get fresh seafood chowder in sour-dough bread bowls. When I say fresh, I mean like mother fuckin' FRESH--like caught within several hours.

Also, there are really high quality Thai restaurants. I became hopelessly addicted to Thai iced tea while I was there.

Make dinner reservations at A16. It's loud, but always rammed and the food is good. Plenty of hot women there on the regular.

go hiking in the hills near berkeley university. it's absolutely gorgeous and it's free. if the weather is nice you can see the whole bay area too. totally killer.

i'd also like to recommend the sushi place across from the bohemian club. it's incredible, but i forget what it's called. you can go check out conspiracy hq before or after the meal too... 'weaving spiders come not here' is the motto, and there's all these super evil sculptures of owls and skulls and shit. totally dope.

1015 is a lot of fun on the right night, and there's tons of free daytime festivals and park gatherings.

have you been to tribe.net?

neat little list of places to hit

carl craig is playing Mezzanine that friday

mos def hit the piers for the chowdah and crab. they are pretty lax with drinking in public too btw

if it's a nice day just walk around lower and upper haight and do some window shopping + you can get right to the tip of golden gate park (which isn't really near the bridge but still)

man too much to squeeze in over a weekend. i love that goddamn city

thanks, everyone, for the suggestions. :)

we ended up hitting ocean beach (big waves but too cold to swim), drove across the golden gate bridge, drove down lombard street, hung out at fisherman's wharf, checked out sausalito, hit stinson beach (where i dove in and managed to stay in for about 50 seconds as it was fa-reezing) and a bunch of other stuff. we wanted to check out ruby skye, but they cancelled their saturday night party when felix da housecat cancelled.

between two of us, we ate about 14 pounds of dungeness crab over 2 days at fisherman's wharf. so good!

then, on the last day, we hit the six flags park, DISCOVERY KINGDOM, which was aight.

i should mention: i was very surprised to learn that san franciscans consider their SUMMER to be SEPT-OCT. apparently that is the only time when you can swim/surf in the ocean without a wetsuit.
