further to the canada thread...& ps don't leave there is no other country in the world like it...i am dismayed by the following news i heard yesterday while teaching a class of grade 8 kids (our future tribe readers)...

the toronto board is selling kearney...what!!!!!! this is where i spent way to many weeks learning how to canoe & play the awesome predator game, roast marshmallows, portage & live on trail mix for days at a time...

they are cancelling music...too expensive to keep schools equipped with instruments...plus how can you have future scientists, & financial experts wasting their time playing the flute or trumpet...

they are cancelling birchmount (the track & field day for good old scarborough board of ed was held here...when i used to be an athlete i would run 800m here every may)...

no more school trips...why take kids to the art gallery, or museum...

the grade 3 & 6 tests which every kid & teacher stress over...yet there is no program in place for official follow up to these tests...just publish the scores & let the press eat up who's best & who's worst...

it's a real shame what has happened to our education system...i for one would hate to see us become similar to the us system...sure wealthy neighbourhood kids can fundraise for new equipment, but what about the schools who service inner city areas???...

i don't know...education means so much to our future, yet we treat it like we're running any other publically traded company...cuts and more cuts to make the shareholders happy...

Idunno.. but I'd rather send my kids to summer camp, and have them join afterschool leauges then have them join teams and go on trips run by disgruntled strike-hungry teachers.

I bet the minister of education and all his pions make a shit load of money.
But, it's a tough job. And you have to pay them alot, to get them to do quality work!

:p

actually it should probably read the education system in general & not just toronto[insert]'[/insert]s...trust me i'm far removed from any sympathy for teachers...

but at the same time when activities disappear which helped shape my experience growing up i can't help but feel a little sad...these kids will never have these opportunities...

anyways...time to get outside...

Oh man, I loved lake St.George. I remember the staff telling us that if the dividing doors between the boys half of the building and the girls half were opened at night that the fire alarm would go off. Pure jokes.......ah to be in grade 7 again.

(in case you're wondering, the fire alarm didn't go off)

What about families who can't afford to send their kids to summer camp?

I said I'd rather, not I'd rather everyone.

There are still governemnt sponsored programs I'm sure for the less fortunate. Afterall, this government is almost socialist.

Educating people on how to enjoy life is also important. The education system is the easiest and possibly the cheapest way too do this. Taking a group of 30 kids canoeing might turn 3 or 4 of them onto the sport. Taking a group of thirty grade eights to see theatre might be the only occasion many of them ever experience it. Taking music out of schools means fewer students will learn to play instruments and be able to read music. Schools need more varied programs to let kids experience more outside of the classroom to give creadnace to whats taught in the schools.

Dumb idea!!!!!

(I don't even think it even makes basic economic sense!!!)

It's so sad. I live right by my old elementary school and has seen what happened.

We used to have a playground, complete with two diamonds, a soccer field and a HUGE wooden jungle gym (?). But now they've stripped down everything. ALl that's left is the field, and the diamonds that are never used.

:(

There's so many memories I've had there. It's too bad the kids of this generation won't have the same kind of freedom and experiences as we've had. What happened to kids being kids? Learning comes through other experiences as well, they aren't just taught in the classroom.

I can't agree with you more. People need variety, KIDS do. We can't all become writers, scientists or mathematicians.

Oh and what were you doing teaching grade 8 kids? :)
