THE ONGOING DEBATE.....

it can be cool for a few tracks... but that acid-chirpy-scratchy noise makes me want to jump out a window if I hear it for too long. I find it very antagonizing.

Peace & love. D

acid techno just isn't about squelchin' 303's. sure there are some labels that are devoted to the 303 (stay up forever), but there are many acid techno labels that have no 303's at all (cluster, for example). the lines are very blurred between hard bangin' techno and acid techno in my opinion. however, most good dj's vary their sets in intensity, layering, and style... the same applies to acid techno.

peace

One of my favorite sets ever is Terry Mullin 'NewSchoolFusion'. It's an old acid tape from waaaaaay back. I bought that tape at X-static. Pure tweaky distorted treats with some dirty kicks and tribal rythyms.

That first track was dope (with the wierd voice telling some kind of story about the start of acid house?)

Have you heard the Josh Wink - "Fusion" tape that was in X-static around the same time? I bought it 'cause he plays the Richie Hawtin remix of "Don't Laugh" on it. I ended up digging the whole tape after that, classic acid house mix!

NO, I mean the idea of having DAVE the DRUMMER do a LIVE PA at our party. It'll be the last one he does in North America but he's gonna do it for us. Plus Guy " geezer" Macaffer is doing a LIVE PA also. NOW THAT's HARD TECHNO !!!

^^ good points ^^ Look at labels like Pounding Grooves and Hydraulix...both labels are started by Acid Producers ( Immersion and DAVE Drummer ) but remain strictly techno in sound. However, these records get NO play from European techno dj's .....Hmmmm???? Same goes for labels like RAW, Bionic Orange, Infected, Cluster, Maximum Minimum and sooo many more.
Acid is definately closer to Techno than Trance.

i really like the stuff that julian liberator puts out as julian sandell. in particular, both tracks on the curved pressing (4X4 vs. wedafuqawi) are sweet, and there's no 303s on either of them.

All those labels are techno, yes. But they can also all be very similar to each other. There isn't a lot of contrast between them on a mix-to-mix level--my roommate has been spinning all of those labels and a few others for about 5 years, and they do indeed get repetitive to the point of monotony. I'm not saying that you can't create exciting sets with this style, but they're all very representative of dark/aggressive/hard "emotions"...

To me, it is music that I like to slip into when the crowd/time is right...but for the most part, I don't limit or focus myself on that style.

yea.. I make a distinction between techno and acid-techno. I liked the earlier plastikman variety of acid-techno but what I hear nowadays as acid-techno just sounds like hard trance to me.

^^ You're thinking of London Acid Techno..^^

I agree with you there...most of that stuff is just old school hard trance with more bass.

As for the distinction factor, I think that the "acid' style techno does ll sound the same but there is very clearly a difference between anything ever put out on 4X4 and anything on Hydraulix...as it is for many labels. So i have to say I disagree on youin that it all sounds the same....I've also heard some very up beat happy style acid and some very dark depressing techno on labels like Primate and Eukatech wich are primarily all more funkier..so I think as far as emotion goes any label and sounds has it's up and downs...
