-=The NHL 2002 Playoffs=-

Wow...as i was sifting through the beloved Tribe Board, i noticed that there wasnt even a NHL playoffs thread??! !? ..and were supposed to be Canadian!! :D

So.....who looks good this year..and who dosent? Now that the NHL second and REAL season begin, are we going to see some upsets? I personally think this WILL be the year of upsets. Alot of teams who were *supposedly* going to kick some ass this year, have been anything but impressive. I see some teams (and some powerhouses at that) taking an early exit in the first round.

EASTERN CONFRENCE

(1)Boston Vs. (8)Montreal - Boston has been a dominant team this year, and especially in the second half. They have a well balanced offence which relies heavily on defence...the Habs are on the same boat except on the fact that their offence isnt quite up to par as Boston's is. The wild card in this series is on what emotional level Montreal will be with the return of the much beloved Saku Koivu. Will this inspire Montreal to the point of a HUGE upset? Maybe..just maybe. Montreal in seven.

(2)Philadelphia Vs. (7)Ottawa - Ottawa is a team which I think is SO cabable of defeating this powerhouse Philly team..only because of Philly's shaky goaltending...however, look for Philly to pound Ottawa into submission. Philly in six.

(3)Carolina Vs. (6)New Jersey - New Jersey has been stepping it up lately, and has shown that the addition of Langenbruner and Newendyk (mind the spelling) has done quite a bit for their team. NJ in six.

(4)Toronto Vs. (5)NY Islanders - NY has been looking good as of late, and has shown that this team, however young they may be, are a team to be reckoned with. Their only downfall is obviously inexperience, and age. something the Maple Leafs certainly do not lack. Toronto in six.

WESTERN CONFRENCE

(1)Detroit Vs. (8)Vancouver - What a monumental task it must seem to the Canucks to have to take on one of the best teams EVER, let alone this year. Detroit has absolutely EVERYTHING from defence to goaltending to offence. Unfortunately for the Canucks, this powehouse Detroit team will overcome, but not without a little trouble from the 'Nucks. Detroit in six.

(2)Colorado Vs. (7)Los Angeles - Colorado is showing their true colours by making a hell of a run in the second half of the season. A very impressive team which looks to go extremely deep in these playoffs...LA just dosent have the team to do any sort of serious damage to Colorado..ESPECIALLY if Forsberg makes it back soon. Colorado in Five.

(3)San Jose Vs. (6)Phoenix - San jose has looked like a fine team all year, with a few hiccups here and there. Phoenix has looked troubled, and has lacked any sort of good strong defence. Look for San Jose to dominate this series. SJ in five.

(4)St Louis. Vs. (5)Chicago - This will be a great series, depending on which Blues team actually shows up..if its the uninspired one which has reared its ugly head in the last half of the season, chicago shouldnt have many problems taking this Blues team down. But you cant count out the Blues IF they get on a roll nd start playing like we all know they can..this in the end will determine this series. Chicago in seven.

So there you are..a quick look at this years playoffs (and my humble predictions :D), i think itll be a great one. Especially for the LEAFS who have been playing some stellar hockey as of late and look like they're ready to finally go deeeeep in the playoffs..and i mean STANLEY CUP FINALS deep. :D

So share your predictions, arguments or whatnot...and let the playoffs BEGIN!!! :D Yay!

I dont think you can write off LA kings so easily. I think that one will either be an upset or COL in 7.

Same thing with Ottawa. While theyre 7th seeed it doesnt mean anything. Both teams match up well and their goaltending isnt that great so I'd say its a crapshoot for that one.

Leafs: well, normally im a super pessimist but this time around its wierd. I feel nervous. and when that happens its usually good b/c i think they can actually do it. to go thru the injuries they have (are) and make it to 4th is wicked. i think it will be Tor. vs. Det. in the finals.

if anyone wants in on a pool let me know ive got a mega one set up. 118 entrants, 10$ to enter, pick any 18 players with 6 defensemen minimum. and one goalie and the team that will win it all. and you get 45% of the pot if you win.

My prediction is that by the end of the playoffs, CO2 will have learned to spell "conference". :p

EASTERN CONFERENCE

(1)Boston Vs. (8)Montreal ~ Boston in 5.

(2)Philadelphia Vs. (7)Ottawa ~ Ottawa in 7

(3)Carolina Vs. (6)New Jersey ~ Jersey in 5

(4)Toronto Vs. (5)NY Islanders ~ Leafs in 6

WESTERN CONFERENCE

(1)Detroit Vs. (8)Vancouver ~ Detroit in 4

(2)Colorado Vs. (7)Los Angeles ~ Colorado in 5

(3)San Jose Vs. (6)Phoenix ~ Sharks in 4

(4)St Louis. Vs. (5)Chicago ~ St. Louis in 7.

No reasons, just picks.

The series in the Eastern conference can go either way so your predictions are fair, but I disagree with some of your picks for the Western conference.

Wings vs Canucks - The wings are winless in 7 or 8 and the Canucks are going in on a high. Look for the Canucks to give the Wings a lot of trouble. The Canucks are the highest scoring team this year. The serie will probably go 6 or 7 games either way.

Avs vs Kings - Kings are a very good team this year. Top PK and PP combined team this year. They struggle a little bit going into the playoffs but when they get hot they can put quite a few wins together in a row. You know who's their goalie? Yup, Felix the Cat, late in the season is his time of the year. Forsberg might not be ready till the second round. Again, this serie should go 6 or 7 going either way.

SJ vs Phoenix - SJ is a very good team, but I have to say Phoenix is the most underrated team this year. Their defence is not too bad, but Markov is injured though. Even that, Sean Burke more than make up for it. This guy is the main reason why Phoenix is in the playoffs. Phoenix in 7.

Blues vs Hawks - This serie can go either way. Depends on how T-Bo plays. If it was based on the first 70 games of the season I would pick the Hawks no doubt about it, but the Blues are coming in strong (including 2 wins vs the Wins) and the Hawks have struggled in the last 10 games in comparison to the rest of their season. Blues in 6, if it goes 7, I pick the Hawks.

Hey now...im giving this Vancouver team ALOT of credit by saying theyll bow out in six. Yes..Detroit has been slacking asof late, but you have to realize that they were so far ahead, that they clinched the presidents trophy and home advantage throughout the entire playoffs LONG before the season actually ended. Not all aplayers were used, and it can be difficult to keep playing (especially for an older teaml ike Detroit)..when you know you have all of that in the bag already.

I agree with the fact that alot of teams can go either way...but im going on hunches here...well except for the Colorado and Kings matchup...i SERIOUSLY think this will be mostly one sided with LA sneaking in a few wins here and there...and im not confident AT ALL with Phoenix's capabilities. Ive been very unimpressed with them..

I CANT WAIT FOR WEDNESDAY TO COME DAMMIT!

Theres just nothing quite like playoff hockey...and i do mean NOTHING!

Hahaha...preach on brotha...theyre aint nada stoppin that team...well except the Leafs ofcourse, but thats only because the Leafs have a knack for beating Detroit in playoff games. Sorry Octopus heads...but its true..ITS DAMN TRUE!

...and oh yeah...in this part of town, we spell conference..CONFRENCE...its a West side thang... :D

Boston - Montreal - Koivu is back, Theadore is playing insane! But the bruins have thorton, samsinov, guerin and some good depth.
Boston in 6

Philly - Ottawa - Ottawa hasn't made it past the first round in like 4 years! They have a really solid team though, and Lalime has had a good playoff run.... Philly has the offensive tools to make up for their goaltending and defensive woes... Primeau is on fire since returning and Roenick never disapoints...
Philly in 6

Carolina - Jersey - I think Carolina luck is about to change! They are a really determined team but i don't think they are prepared for the long run. Brodeur has been stepping it up for NJ! NJ has the experience, skill, and leadership to go far.. and they are finally looking like a team!
Jersey in 5

Toronto - NYI - What can be said? The leafs are almost back to full strength! Joseph is finally back between the pipes and not looking too bad, but how ready is he physically after 6 weeks off? Mogilny has been looking good since returning and Sundin is always a factor. Isls are not to be underminded though. They have a really offensive team and are doing alright with Osgood in net. This will be a wicked series!
Toronto is 7

Detroit - Vancouver - Canucks just barely landed a playoff spot... and the Wings are just waaaay too powerfull for them. Clean sweep
Wings in 4

Colorado - LA - Colorado is another team that just has it all... and the chance (albeit a small one) that Forsberg will return just pushes them over the edge. LA is good too though. Some sweet offensive talent from Palffy and Allison and i still like Potvin in net. They will but up a valiant fight!
Avs in 7

San Jose - Phoenix - Phoenix is starting to show the Gretzky factor, but i dont think they will go far this year. Beating the sharks will be a very hard thing for any team to do! If San Jose had a top notch goalie like the wings or avs they would be soo huge! They will go far though
Sharks in 6

St Louis - Chicago - St Louis is about to run out of steam I say! I've never really liked them so i could be a bit biased. Chicago looks strong with Thibaut in net. Im also a big fan of Daze. This could go either way... but i don't think it will be a very exciting series.
Chicago in 7

this is my favorite time of year...because in a few weeks, the leafs will again loose in the playoffs, and i'll crack a cold one, tip my cap to my 1993 Stanley Cup Champion poster showing the Canadiens with the cup, and prepare for another beautiful summer listening to leaf fans cry...

go habs go..

The best ever!

I am really excited for this years playoffs.......we are having a pool tomorrow, Going to try and decide who I thinks gonna go far.....

NJ over Car
I think the Canes have little chance against a good NJ team.

Toronto Maple Leafs over NYI
GO LEAFS GO!

PHI over OTW
Really hopeing for the Sens to beat the Flyers, but me thinks Philly is too strong...I think Gagne is going to have a good playoffs.

BOS over MTL
Again, I will be cheering for the Canadian team, but I think the beantowners have a real solid squad, and I think they have what it takes to make it quite a ways in the playoffs.

SJ over PHX
This should be a pretty low scoring series in my mind, and I like the Sharks to make a good run.

STL over CHI
Like it has been said B4, this could go either way. I look for Weight and Stillman to step it up.

COL over LA
Again a tough call, depending on which LA team shows up, but with the return of Forsberg(BTW on sportsdesk, they interviewed him, and he confirmed he is starting game 1 vs LA) I see the defending champs partying on!

DET over VCR
Well as much as I'd like to see the Canucks win, I think that with Stevie Y coming back, and Shanny, Robitaille, Hull, Federov, Lidstrom, Chelios, Hasek....Det look like a hell of a team. The line of Morrison, Nasland and Bertuzzi has been totally ruleing as of late, but Detriot cant loose out in the first round. Can they? Massive Detroit Riots and Fires What!

and one final words......

GO LEAFS GO!!!!!!!
