in my most splended mightiness of mighty I have introduced you all to soulseek, audiogalaxy and morpheus when they were just starting out, and I feel it is my duty as royal dicknose of dickery [title given to me affectionately by Slipperypete] to tell you now about Direct Connect
Morpheus and the network it runs off apparently went tits up earlier this week. Most importantly it's network is centralized, meaning it can be shutdown.
Direct Connect has been receiving a lot of accolades from geek circles for a while but I could never get the client to run properly. Until now - evidently there is an open source version of the program that is even better than the one the original creators made, called Direct Connect +. It's an optimized client that has a much cleaner interface and seems to run better too.
In short, this thing rocks. It's not as simple an interface as audiogalaxy but in turn you have access to much more than just MP3's - you can share any type of file you want. It is truly a decentralized network, running off "hubs" which are started by users, so there isn't a real easy way for things to be shut down. Basically you connect to a hub, and on the hub there are users whos files you have access to. You can connect to multiple hubs at once. Hubs can be privatized as well.
Heads up - check it out, this has a lot of promise.
