The Mom Thread

mcbee I hope you like the book, I should really get it because I need some inspiration on being more zen haha! I was talking to another mom about how hard it is to just be with your baby when you feel like you have a million things to do, but the larger issue is just how little is actually within your control and just accepting that every day. I found the worst was the early baby stage and now it's a bit better because L is more independent, but I still struggle with wanting to be functioning at my old full capacity and not being able to yet.

Glad to hear the 1 nap a day is a nice time, when L has 1 nap only he's much more likely to have a night terror so we know he's not ready yet, but if there's too much excitement on a given day he will skip a nap, and he seems to be switching to one nap but then every few days he's too tired for it and has a run of 2 nap days. I think part of the issue is we don't have a perfect schedule and put him to bed a bit too late sometimes so again I'm just looking forward to a time when we just have to ensure one good nap and a decent bedtime.

amy, we got black out blinds for both our room and Brooklyn's room from Blinds to Go....I think they were about 150$ each window.

:)sarah

I forgot to mention that we have glass sliding patio doors plus a big window in both our room AND the nursery! Hence places like blinds to go get pretty pricey :(

I have had clients who fit bristol board onto patio doors/windows for a temp fix. Do whatever it takes to get that nursery DARK! Your battle will be minimized big time.

Just remember, getting more sleep is *priceless*. :)

Wal-Mart is definitely a cheaper option, but they might fall into the "ugly" category. Doesn't matter to me though - I'm sleeping!

Your post makes a lot of sense, thank you very much for that. I think I probably put too much thought into it, because I am just trying to figure out what the "right" thing is. I really struggle with my type of personality sometimes, I set high expectations of myself and expect things to be perfect. I don't stress when they don't, but I come down really hard on myself if it happens.

I was desperate to do the "right" thing and impose some sort of schedule on Zoë in the first few months and I made myself abjectly miserable doing it because it just didn't suit her. Go with the flow and take any advice with a grain of salt has now become my mantra.

And I'm now 14 and a bit weeks preggo for the second time, and we just found out last week at the ultrasound that it's TWINS - surprise! So everything I thought I was ready for has flown out the window! LOL. I actually wanted to ask for a recommendation for some sort of belly/back support belt - I remember there being some posts about that a while ago but I can't find them. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm already feeling kind of heavy, and the difference in the size of the tummy from morning to evening is crazy...

Congrats Barkley, wow twins, awesome!

This week L has been happy to only have 1 nap, but it's the morning nap, so he's barely making it through our family time although if we do outdoor stuff before dinner he's not melting down. Today on the way home from the park he fell asleep on my back (he has NEVER done that!) at 6:15, I was able to transfer him to bed and give him a bottle and was hopeful he would do well with the early bedtime, but instead he woke up an hour later really unhappy (crying and saying "no no no" over and over), then he went back to sleep at 8 after watching his show and is still sleeping. And of course I'm wondering if he'll be up even earlier than usual but I know they say early bedtimes are better for babies, stay tuned! I found this article on dropping the morning nap and we're going to try some of the suggestions to see if that helps: Dropping a Nap Without Drama

Thanks, ladies!! We seem to have gotten over the initial shock all right, I'm sure it'll be crazy when they arrive! I think I'm most distraught about having to get rid of my little Echo and upgrade to a MINIVAN right now... ha!

Zoë will be about to turn 3 when they arrive, and they appear to be fraternal so we could have a boy/girl combo in there. We were due for some twins in the family - my grampa had twin siblings and my mum was disappointed when she didn't have twins, so she's pumped now!

As far as dropping naps goes, we found going down to one nap to be pretty straightforward - Z went down to one nap at around 11 months at daycare and we phased it out on the weekends by 14 or 15 months. We just kept her busy and didn't let her sleep until about 11:30 or 12:00 and put-down time just gradually got a bit later. She really only started napping well once we went down to one nap. Now we're getting rid of her one nap - it was always short but now she can't have more than 30 minutes or night-time sleep goes to hell. She skips her nap altogether some days and is only marginally crankier in the evening, so I guess she's ready.

If you have the butterfly it's not made for front-facing, that would be the gemini (which is also a great carrier). She might like being on your back, and with the butterfly it is really easy.

Yeah, I have the butterfly. Wasn't something I was thinking about when I bought it. Ah well. Live and learn. So hard to know what features are important when buying baby gear. Now I know!

You make the back carrying look easy! I will have to find the dvd that it came with and watch it again. Next time, I'm feeling adventurous I will try it. :)

Barkley, congrats!!!

Will you find out the sexes??

Anyone know off hand how much the costco halloween costumes are? I know they already have them out. I know, seems early! I already bought Presley's snow suit and hat!

Because the butterfly has baby in the harness, they can't get into too much danger if you put baby on your back, but I suggest having someone else present to help you out the first time and doing it when Presley is in a good mood.

You can do it two ways:

Putting baby on back in Beco Butterfly - YouTube

Beco Butterfly 2 Front to Back or Person to Person transfer; Stay Put strap - YouTube

I prefer the second method. L would always fall asleep on my back when he was younger and I wore him in the butterfly, transferring him out was a bit difficult but it was so nice.

And yes because L is used to it I can throw him on my back and pull a carrier up over his back without any internal harness, I have had people on the street offer to help because it must look pretty dangerous, but L is used to it and doesn't try to escape, and I always do it over grass and I stay fairly low just in case he gets frisky and I need to put him down, as he gets bigger it gets easier because he's almost in the right position if I just have him on my hip. I love that I can wear the carrier around my waist and let him roam half the time and then wear him when he gets tired of walking, strollers have their place too but I find them too clunky in a lot of situations.

I just ordered a 'safety harness' aka leash for him and a wrist tether (Buy LittleLife Safety Wrist Link from Canada at Well.ca - Free Shipping), and I am already planning on how I can attach the wrist thing to the carrier so when it's around my waist he can walk and I can have my hands free. I like to let him walk as much as possible but when the roads have a lot of traffic I think it will be a big help, he still thinks it's hilarious to run up to the road, I feel like I'm playing defense when we're in the front of our house. I'm hoping we'll only need to use it for a few months while he learns the difference between the road and the sidewalk (early morning joggers who run on the road are not helping at all).

Good good reminder geminigirl, I want L to have a costume this year and they sell out so early! I have all of L's winter stuff except boot liners, I am ready, it had better be colder this year than last because he wore his snowsuit exactly once and was a total waste of money unless it fits him this year.

I got Matteo a fireman's costume at Costco for $15. Really good quality stuff. I may just get him to wear the jacket cuz the reflectors on it are really good. lol

He loves wearing it NOW, never mind Halloween!

I personally love this store...

Halloween Costumes - Adult Costumes, Kids Costumes for Women, Men, Boys, Girls, Sexy Costumes, Costume Shop

The store can turn into a zoo when it gets closer to the day, but you really can't beat the options, it has everything, on every size, shape, etc. Everything Halloween this store has it and I have not found anything coming close to this.

And when I mean everything, I mean I was Flava Flave for Halloween last year.

This year however, I will be a woman in labour for Halloween, and I don't need a costume. Although I think it would be kind of fun to dress up and just sit in the birthing tub.

Actually, the more I read what I wrote, the more I am tempted to do it. lol :)

I'm super short, and I was huge, and I found the one I got at Motherhood Maternity really useful. It took a huge weight off me, but then again I never had twins...

but hey Congratulations!!!!
