Ben transitioned to one nap a day at 15 months, but I wish I'd pushed him to do it sooner since it really helped his overnight sleep.

andrea I transitioned at 10 months and while it took some time to become the norm it really helped her get over the 5AM wake-up phase

a friend of mine on FB was just asking at what age the majority of babies go from two to one nap. judging by the 15 ish responses, and my own personal experience with Elliot, most of the babies transition from two to one around 1 year old, give or take a month or 3. Elliot was a good morning napper and a crap afternoon napper until i switched him to one long nap immediately after lunch. He had the afternoon nap from 1 year until 3 1/4 years.

we just got back from 10 days at the cottage and Thomas is all outta whack - he's only had one nap today, guess it'll be early to bed for him...

Brooklyn is 14.5 months and still going strong with two naps....every so often, she'll skip the afternoon nap, but she ready, willing and able consistently for her morning nap by 9am. 9:30 at the latest. The past 3 days she's done a 2 hour nap in the am, and 1 or 1.5 in the afternoon. Her night sleep has always been solid....she's been 6:30/7 to 6:30/7 for almost 7 months now. I kind of want her to transition to one nap, so we can do longer outings on the weekends, but on the other hand 2 naps is good!

Reason #9574935740 why I refuse to believe in Western medicine:

So it turns out I don't have pneumonia, I have pertussis, or whooping cough. I looked in my homeopathic manuals from the school that I studied and after checking all the symptoms it was pretty bang on.

Dry cough, worse in the evening and night and often begin the minute the my head touches the pillow on lying down, lasting for over 5 weeks, violent coughing with vomiting throughout the night, bruised ribs, etc...

The hospital told me I have pneumonia and told me that I am supposed to rest and not work out and that my lungs are full of fluid.

Actually, light activity is recommended in this case and my lungs are NOT full of any fluid. Ironically, I started taking homeopathic medicine and some herbal remedies that my manuals recommended and I am actually finally starting to get better, first time in 5 weeks. My husband also has it, but his cough is not as bad and he is almost fine, obviously me being pregnant is going to take a while. I also know that since my antibodies have gotten to my bean, he will be fine when I give birth.

If L only has 1 nap he sleeps worse at night still so I'm still encouraging the two naps. But I do think once he switches he will sleep better at night, or at least longer.

Glad Andrea isn't waking you up at 5 anymore! That sounded so rough. L is up at 6:30, 7 if we are really lucky. He's content to lie in bed for 20-30 minutes so today because it was my bf's turn to spend the night with L I got to sleep until 7:30, that was amazing.

I wish L wanted that much sleep. His day nap time is normally about 2-2.5 hours total, less or more than that makes his night sleep worse and shorter.

I love this age though, lots of fun, the start of independence is so apparent now. And his sleep skills are gradually getting better. He's bonding with his stuffed animals and will hug them to sleep, and he gets tremendous joy from his blankies. A few days ago he was so ready for his first nap of the day he just lay down on the floor in the kitchen with his blanket, and last night while watching our pre-bed tv (in the night garden) he yawned and waved bye-bye to the screen and we took him to bed. I'd like to replace some books with the tv but he's still not that interested that time of day. We are getting ready to transition him to his own room/bed once we move into our new place.

Very cute swimming babies! When they're bigger these things are the best:

They can't fall off and they support the child a lot better than the old kind of water wings.

FYI - The Children's Place is offering FREE shipping on ALL orders today (Monday).
I just grabbed Elliot some pull on pants for school (on sale) as he'll have to go to the washroom on his own so I don't want him to have to fuss with buttons & zippers.

apparently whooping cough is actually making a comeback, notably in Southern Ontario: Comeback of a deadly disease, and where we went wrong - The Globe and Mail

What a shitty time to contract whooping cough! I'm not surprised that doctors initially mis-diagnosed, because the 2 conditions tend to go hand in hand. And, if you actually have fluid in your lungs then its pretty likely that you have both conditions simultaneously.

Yeah, you are absolutely right - I just read about it too the other day. Shitty time indeed, however I am glad I will be done before bean is born, as newborns exposed to this is incredibly dangerous.

I am feeling much better. The remedy and herbal stuff worked. Last night I got 9 hours of sleep, something that has been unheard of in the last 6 weeks. And sleep is KEY for this to get better.

My ribs are still really sore and I still have violent coughs 2-3 times a day, but where I am today to where I was 2-3 weeks ago... I thought I was going to die.

Yep, I still believe home birth is going to be a breeze compared to this. lol hehehe :p
In other news, 26 weeks today - WHERE DOES THE TIME GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO???????

are you saying you know you have pertussis from looking in a homeopathic manual and matching the symptoms or because you had a swab done and it came back as pertussis? there are a lot of similar infections that sound like whooping cough based on symptoms but are not that! if you actually have pertussis - were you at your midwifery clinic recently? it is HIGHLY contagious and extremely dangerous for infants under 18 months. you should alert them and you should NOT go out in public right now.

I am saying I HAD pertussis (which has been confirmed by my midwife based on the swab results) and I am in the convalescent phase now.
My bean right now is safe and sound inside of me, where he built immunity and I am very aware of its effects on newborns. Thus closer to a month before delivery date, it will be assessed in terms of my healing process. I am already on my 7th week and I got at least 10 weeks to go until delivery, so as far as I am concerned (and midwife), there are no reasons to worry.

I think girlnextdoor is thinking about the safety of OTHER newborns that you may have come in contact with when out in public (while in your contagious phase). But if your midwife knows, I imagine she's already checked in with any women that had babies in the clinic when you were there.

Glad to hear your on the mend - pertussis is scary stuff!

Lilah and I are back from our trip home. All that worrying about the flights, and of course it all worked out just fine! She was such a good baby :)

I can't believe how much of a difference 3 weeks can make in a baby at this age. Before the trip she would mainly roll from her back to her front and then get all frustrated because she felt "stuck". Now she's doing multiple rolls to get across the room, turning herself around in a circle, and juuuuust starting to figure out the army crawl (still tends to go backwards instead of forwards). She can maintain a sit for a good amount of time but still loses balance backwards. And both bottom teeth have cut through!

Too bad she hasn't figured out the self soothing thing yet. Ah well, I guess that's what happens when you have a crazy active baby? At least that's what I keep telling myself - hah!

I was so sick, I worked from home for about 2.5 weeks, so besides my husband, I was in contact with noone - I felt pretty lonely actually. :(

My midwife told me that there is noone in the clinic that has had it, but she did tell me there is an outbreak this year of it. I am going to see her again on Aug 2nd and I will ask her to see if she had any other cases.

Backwards crawling is the cutest! L did that too before crawling forwards.

It will come, I think the first year is so crazy with all of the teeth coming and all of the milestones and brain development, for those that can get their babies sleep trained and have it stick, kudos, but things change so rapidly that I don't think it really matters what you do in the first year.

L is getting so much better (although now he's getting his premolars so last night he was whining/crying in his sleep and waking up more, poor guy), and now I just savor the time we get when he wants us to cuddle him back to sleep. Savoring is a lot easier now that my bf is fully able to help half the time though! He consistently falls asleep with us in bed with him but we don't have to rock or do anything but cuddle him which is a huge change. And he instigated it, I would try to rock him in the carrier and he would flip out, I'd take him out and he'd get himself comfortable in bed so now that's what we do. One thing we did consistently though was consistent bedtime, a loose routine, and comfort objects (first blankets, and now soft toys too). Because he's all over the place we make sure he has the same comfort objects everywhere he goes. We just got him this little dog lovey that you can attach a pacifier to and now that goes everywhere with him, and he can easily find his pacifier at night without us, and it doesn't get stuck behind his neck or back which is nice.

And the action doesn't stop. I thought L would be content with being able to walk but now it's running and climbing, but coming out of the first year things are easier. Still demanding, but a bit easier. :)

How big are your babies?

My son is 20 pounds, and 6 months old. The doctor says he is off the charts on every level, including height, head circumference, etc He goes for his 6 month check up on Monday.

My mom is calling him fat. She is saying I need to focus more on feeding him food vs giving him bottle. Isn't he supposed to have a bottle as his main source of nutrition? Am I not supposed to give him his bottle first, then feed him the food?

He is up to having 8oz bottles most of the time (sometimes only 6 oz, but he mostly has 8 oz), and he eats lunch and dinner. My mom says to try and stick to 6 oz bottles, but if I do that he cries. He wants more. I feed him 60ml of pureed chix/veg, and 30ml of fruit.

Does that seem ok? Can I help that the fact I have a "big boy" ? Why would I cut my son's bottle amount down?

I've met a few other babies Quintin's age that are identical in size and weight and we all seem to have happy healthy children, but we're also all getting the fat jokes about how big our babies are.

david is pretty big and i don't see it as being a problem. he eats really well (no junk food obv) and that is a great thing. i'd be worried if he didn't. and i'm not sure if having a big baby has much to do with what you feed them anyways. unless there's a medical issue, thinking about putting an infant on a diet is kind of ridiculous. you're right to feed him as much formula as he wants. but you could probably switch to food first if you wanted to, he'll eat food or formula as long as he's hungry and that's fine.

we make jokes about david being a big baby all the time. but i guess it doesn't matter to us cause we're not really worried about it. in fact, we're quite proud to have a big, healthy boy.

Skypaty, his bottle amounts are bang on for his age. He is just a big boy and you know best for your baby. He will lean out as he is closer to toddler age.

skyparty, at this age i would worry about WHAT you're feeding him. if he's fat cuz you're giving him processed food and sugar to chew on, i would worry. if he's just a big kid (mine has always been near the 100th percentile) and eats fruits, veggies, and natural cereal purees with his bottle, then i wouldn't worry.
