The Great Gin Debate and other alcohol related discussions...

The problematic issue of what gin to buy at the local liquor store seems to be rearing its head more and more often these days. I used to buy Tanqueray exclusively, but then on a chance at Duty Free I bought a bottle of Bombay Sapphire...and then if that was not bad enough Tanqueray released Tanqueray Ten! I am just curious as to what gins the many connoiseurs that frequent this board select?

Also, if you happen to have discovered, or created, an alcoholic libation of some sort please share...

I hope not too many of you have had this drink before but a Stolichnaya Vanilla Gimlet is a delicious drink..and easy to make too!

1 and 3/4 oz of Stoli Vanil and mix with 1/4 oz Rose's Lime Cordial.

And who doesn't like the taste of Windex...

Here's a recipe for a drink called Tastes Like....Burning:

2 oz. Windex
1 oz Tabasco
Mix in a tall glass and bubble with a can of Lysol.

Serve to unlikeable characters only.

Bombay makes for the best Martini, esp. if you can find the imported 120-proof version. You can buy it in New York state.

For G&T, in my opinion you can't touch Tanq - is has a much stronger bite than Bombay that just cuts through a Gin&Tonic like nail polish remover through snot. Mmmmmm. Tanqueray G&T with a slice of lime.

Gin lovers, try a some Tanqueray with Welch's white grape juice - a little club soda is optional. I was messing around one day and came up with this unusual combination... so, I suppose if anybody asks you what you're drinking tell them it's a "nebula"

Red Bull, where can I buy that in the states? I rode down to Niagara Falls USA, stopped at Tops and they didn't have it.

Sorry to change the topic, carry on with the Gin Debate, just throw my answer in a P.S.

I used to say that the first few times i had gin - although admittedly it was a martini and christ those are strong. mow i really enjoy a good gin and tonic once in a while with a twist of lime.

it's refreshing and not sweet like any drink with soda in it and it's not heavy like beer.

Bombay sapphire is excellent, i don't really like beefeater or seagram's because there isn't much to them. but sapphire has that nice hint of flavour that keeps you coming back for more. i still haven't tried tanq 10, and since it's available at the liquor stores now and i'm out of my sapphire i may just indulge in some - although it is $50/ 750mL.

Vodka is where it's at.
uh, no. vodka, by definition is a flavourless spirit. so you don't really like anything about vodka other than the drunkeness that it induces. unless it's Skyy - then we can talk.

If you have to drink gin warm, like on a camping trip to Shirkston shores or if you are smuggling 750mLs into Hullabaloo in a ziplock bag in your underwear, then I recommend Tanqueray. It is smoother than the cheap gins and, unlike the Saff, doesn't smell skunky when warmed to crotch temperatures. (insert crotch smell joke here). Tanqueray also keeps longer (not that this is ever a problem). Bombay Sapphire is definitely a step up though for the delicate botanicals at cooled temperatures, which is of course the best way to have it served especially if you are going to be mixing it with martini&rossi vermouth, which is quite casky at room temperatures (OK for some folk).

Tanq 10 is OK but it tastes too much like Sapphire without the cool blue bottle so... add in that it is a Johnny Come Lately and I don't see much reason to prefer it.

The best Gin I have ever enjoyed was a bottle of Quintessential. Süßer Gott im Himmel, this I tell you all, it is good warm, cold, anywhere anytime. It is so incredibly smooth, not burning, and is what gin is -supposed- to be. It has no botanicals to taint the juniper berries (which are actually pinecones) but the extra work has been put in to keep it from being biting or bitter. I once had the great pleasure of devouring a bottle of the stuff. It's bottle is also cooler than Bombay's, for what it's worth. Mind you, paying for the difference isn't all that cool.

Candykids don't like gin.

i actually drank two g & t's this past week. it was very strange. not so bad, if only a little bitter. i think i'll stick to girl drinks though....then again, i'm pretty sure i also drank a martini that had a piece of sushi at the bottom of it which was supposed to be there, so...there are really no excuses for my behaviour.

Jeffsus: You find that Tanq 10 tastes like Sapphire?? Really?? I find Tanq 10 has a hint of citrus in it giving it a unique taste myself...

Your suggestions regarding smuggling gin have also been duly noted in my brain's databanks.

As for this "most delicious" gin you speak of..is it readily available in North America or is it exclusive to the shores of Europe, which would be quite tragic.

Sunkist: Just so you know this is Peter (Zoned on icq)..I finally registered! YEA ME! :)

Nebula: Thanks for the recipe...I will try mixing that concoction up the next chance I get..which will probably be tomorrow night (Monday) haha

Are there any other interesting and unique recipes floating around out there?

Joey:

Did you get my e-mail notifying you of my presence on this board? (this is peter from nyc aka the deep man hahaha)

And those malt liquors you mention are all *fine* but for the true experience you should really try Steel Reserve. At the bodega on my block I can by two 40ozers for 4 dollars :)

Joey:

You clever clever man

We can do make that plan a reality if you make it down to visit me here in nyc.

I won't be back in toronto for a while....

I don't think train tix are *that* expensive, and of course you could crash at my place. And as an added incentive we could even walk the 10 blocks up to Harlem to buy our 40s :)
