So Mir and Nog as the next TUF coaches. Safe to say that "interim" heavy weight title won't be fixed/defended for another year.

Sometimes I hate the ufc so much.

Well I bet the original plan was to put Brock in there instead of Mir for publicity's sake, but him losing obviously threw a bit a of a wrench into those plans.

That'll be a pretty boring season IMO.

I somehow don't see those two coaches being very interesting to watch on tv. Charisma? No. Speaka de english? Not so much.

I just want to see Nog fight. Bah. Is it too much to ask to have titles defended three times a year? I just hate that they are giong for tv ratings while devaluing the titles.

I actually like Mir's TV personality. Nog, I like as well - but yeah...english? Maybe he'll speak the international language of pain!

I'm not hyped at all for a Mir vs. Nog fight though. Mir needs to be rebuilt before he gets a shot.

Mir needs to retire

TUF has done what it ws supposed to do now the show must end for good....

HW division is terrible and TUF'ers wont fix that

i think it is too much to ask. if the champ is healthy then it be possible but an injury would obviously put them out. i dont think it's about ratings as much as having healthy fighters.

yup, it's a sad day for the heavyweight division when your champ, one of the all-time greats, defends against Frank Mir. Mir's comeback has been less than stellar and I feel is in no way deserving of a title shot, but then again, who is when you look at the HW roster?? I foresee Nog/Herring IV in the near future.

peace

That'd be horrid. Herring has done less than Mir has as of late, IMO

In other news, here's the current July 19/08 Affliction card:

Fedor Emelianenko vs Tim Sylvia
Josh Barnett vs Pedro Rizzo
Ben Rothwell vs Andre Arlovski
Aleksander Emelianenko vs Paul Buentello
Matt Lindland vs Fabio Negao
Renato Sobral vs Mike Whitehead
Savant Young vs Mark Hominick
Brett Cooper vs Mike Pyle
Ray Lamaza vs Justin Levens
JJ Ambrose vs Patrick Speight

Is Nog injured? Mir? No, but lets wait from February untill November or December for a championship match. That's way too long. The belt doesn't mean much if it's only defended once every 9-10 months. Sure it's one thing if the champ is injured ala Rampage, but just to accomidate the schedule of their TV show in order to build the match? No.

If the champ is healthy then 3-4 fights a year is very doable.

Great fights in Dream.3

Hansen vs. Alvarez = AWESOME fight. Simply awesome from start to finish.

Ishida vs. Uno = Amazing finish.

Kawajiri vs. Buscape = Decent enough.

The rest of the fights of interest (Manhof, Miller, Diaz) went as expected, with the "name" fighters destroying their Japanese/Korean opponents. Diaz mauled Inoue for the last 30 seconds. Dude was out on his feet - you could hear the crack as Diaz tee'd off on Inoue's jaw. Manhof did his opponent in with one knee on the ground and Miller ran a clinic on Shibata.

The other fights were okay, but nothing to write home about.

So, after this, we'll just have to wait for Aoki to fight Nakamura IIRC and we'll have the final 4.

havent watched all the fights yet but the Alvarez vs. Hansen was incredible you got a bit of everything in that fight WOW WOW WOW!

Diaz mah boy!!! absolutely killed that poor basterd thank jebus they threw in the towel, gotta give the boy credit he can take a beating....

what I was most impressed with was Diaz not only pounded on him but ate a few big shots like they were nothing and kept coming, once he's done destroying everyone over there the UFC will have to take him back

going to watch more tonight!

I guess you have a point on that in this situation. But I would have to agree with ufc here I'd rather them build the fight up albeit months into the future. Why would you want to see the title defended for a who cares fight rather then build some interest. I think if Nog vs Mir were to happen anytime soon it would be far from headlining any card....

Mir doesn't deserve a shot right now, so no matter when it happens it should not be headlining any card IMO, plus there's not much to build up in that fight at all really

The division is so garbage that Mir is the # 1 yeah fucking right..

Agreed Joey. There's so little interest in that fight right now, at least through some TV exposure someone might care about the HW title fight down the line since neither Nog nor Mir are big money draws in UFC.

But the tv show is going to take so long. Want to build up the match? Have them show up at the PPVs. Do interviews, show clips, whatever. We have two of the top heavy weight BJJ guys in what will most likely be a clinic of a match. That will sell the match on its own, plus we could see it sooner after being announced.

There are guys like me who don't watch the reality show, but still get excited about the current fighters.

Don't get me wrong, I'd rather see the match now than wait too, but I can see why UFC is doing this. Their HW division is at best stagnant, and after Mir, who else is there to fight for the title? None of the top heavyweight prospects have been able to chain up a few wins in a row and right now it's guys like Fabricio Werdum and Heath Herring who are hovering near the top of the division (and that's just heartbreaking).

At least with some time perhaps the more exciting heavyweights like Brandon Vera and Cheik Kongo will gather up another win or two and get their place in line for a shot. UFC might even finish negotiations to hold Arlovski on for a little while longer, even if he hasn't yet looked as impressive as he did when he held the title.

regardless of his experience, I think any match with Brock can easily headline a ufc event. not saying im a big fan but he has a huge draw. as for it being a good match only time will tell

good article......

Diaz will fight Sakurai, but he wants Aoki

Despite having to battle through bureaucratic hardships that complicated the weight-cutting process, Nick Diaz (Pictures) was still able to put on a striking clinic against welterweight King of Pancrase Katsuya Inoue (Pictures).

Diaz credits his superb conditioning as the key element in making the 170-pound limit on such short notice.

"Yeah, it affected me, [but] I came here to fight so I understand what it's like," Diaz said. "I come prepared, so it didn't have anything to do with me. I was also prepared to go ahead and make whatever weight he wanted. If you said I wasn't going to be able to fight unless I was 154 pounds, I'd have stayed up all night running a marathon trying to make 154 pounds to get in there and showcase my skills in that ring."

Diaz described the process of originally preparing to fight Marcelo Garcia (Pictures), only to have his opponent switched to Inoue and then have the bout cancelled altogether. Discouraged after the cancellation, Diaz had lifted his dietary restrictions and looked to move forward by helping teammate Jake Shields (Pictures) prepare for his upcoming bout. Shortly thereafter, though, he received the call to continue with the weight cutting because the fight was back on.

"I think [Inoue] did an excellent job for trying to throw a lot of punches like he did," Diaz remarked. "He got back up, and I didn't mean to let him back up, but I wasn't too worried about exerting the energy trying to keep him down. I didn't know what would be better, trying to finish the fight early -- but with the weight issue, I didn't want to use that kind of energy on the ground, so I threw punches.

"I felt like I was a lot stronger than him, and I kept that sort of a pace because I wanted to make sure I could take some of his energy before I could settle down and land punches. I had a lot less sparring for this fight, so I didn't want to play around. I wanted to make sure I stayed on him and kept him at a low energy level. Once I took his wind, I wanted to keep him that way."

Inoue, who perhaps unwisely decided to stand with Diaz, claimed that doing so was in line with his game plan.

"Well, as for my fight against Gomi, it wasn't like being hit with one strong strike," Inoue said of Diaz's punching power. "When [Diaz] hit me, it wasn't like it was really hard, but after a few of them, it really got to me."

Having put Inoue away, Diaz is now expected to fight Hayato "Mach" Sakurai for the Dream welterweight title. Despite respecting the veteran Shootor, Diaz was decidedly less excited at the prospect of fighting him compared to dropping to lightweight for other challenges.

"You know, there's a lot of other people I'd like to fight, just considering Mach Sakurai is a lot older than I am," Diaz said. "He's probably in his late 30s I'd imagine, so I'm going to have a lot of respect for him and everything he's done. I tend to do better with people I have less respect for. To be honest, I'd rather be fighting Shinya Aoki (Pictures) or Kawajiri -- somebody other than the guy that got knocked out by someone I already beat [Gomi].

"But I think I match up very well against Mach Sakurai. I think he's a little too short to reach me, and I think his ground game needs a lot of work and you can't teach old dogs new tricks. Like I said though, I'm not afraid to fight anybody -- that's not the issue. I'll fight anyone you got. I'm here to prove I'm pound-for-pound the greatest fighter on Earth."

After discussing Sakurai, Diaz reasserted his challenge to rising Japanese star Shinya Aoki.

"I know the only way to win is not care to win or lose," he said. "That's why I'm not afraid of anybody and why I want to fight the best. I think Shinya Aoki is the best fighter here. I want to fight this guy -- I think I can beat him.

"I think that I would use the same technique and skills of judo and jiu-jitsu that he does, just that I get excited and will punch when it's time to punch. And I know he's not much of a striker or standup fighter, but I train a lot of standup striking. [Aoki is] good on the ground, but I'm good on the ground too. I know [he's] not good at standup, and I do a lot of standup. I would like to fight and win to bring that one home for the team to prove that I'm the better jiu-jitsu student, and so I can represent Cesar Gracie (Pictures) jiu-jitsu."

Tonight's Sengoku II card:

Satoru Kitaoka vs. Ian Schaffa
Eiji Mitsuoka vs. Kwang Hee Lee
Yuki Sasaki vs. Jorge Santiago
Yoshihiro Nakao vs. Jim York
Mike Pyle vs. Dan Hornbuckle

Decent enough - should be some good grappling if nothing else with the last 2 matches.
