Picked up a pair of Wharfedale Diamond's bookshelf speakers on sale at Bay Bloor last week, sound fantastic am very happy (especially compared to my old Logitech 5.1 which finally bit the dust)

Time to bump this thread.

Anyone got any new gear lately?

Looking at setting up a small system in my garage. Old school am fm receiver and some bookshelf speakers. Need a place to chill and listen to baseball as the playoffs approach.

Already have the recliner set up and ready for lounging.

So the garage system has been set up and I've added an old turntable for those impromptu vinyl sessions.

In the process of upgrading the amp to either a used Krell or Naim integrated.

And I'm on the fence in picking up a used Totem Mani 2 with target stands. Price is right but I'm not sure sure. May opt for used Totem model 1 from my local dealer.

Sat on the fence for a while as I wasn't sure which way to go, but I've lined up a set of Totem Forest speakers from my local stereo shop.

My amp isn't quite up to snuff as far as having the power to drive these the way I would like but I think it will do the trick for now and then in a year or so I will make the switch from the integrated amp to dedicated power and pre-amp.

I have been blasting my totem rainmakers for a little over a year now and I am throughly enjoying the sonic boom. They seem to make each song sing as I have been rediscovering songs.

Do you have dedicated stands for your speakers?

When I was looking at the Mani2's I had 4 post mass loaded target stands with them.

I would have pulled the trigger on them but the seller was in Ottawa and I wasn't up to make the trip to audition them.

I will eventually have stands for them. I have two young kids and if they touch my speakers I will snap!! lol. I had to put them up on a bookshelf / opposite corners. Im not thrilled with the set up as I read the rainmakers perform best on stands about 1 - 2 feet from a wall. When they get older I will continue to trick out my audio room but for now it will have to do.

Tuner - Old vs. New

So, it's finally going to be time to upgrade to a proper receiver to power my wharfedale diamond speakers.

I don't have a huge budget, would like to keep it in the $200 range.

Will be used mostly for streaming music, watching movies, etc.

I'm NOT super concerned about 5.1 or surround sound.

I found a store near me that carries older stereo tuners that have been completely refurbished. They look quite nice and my understanding is they will likely sound a little warmer and nicer, and likely last longer.

Though, new entry level receivers have a few more bells and whistles, remote control etc.

Any thoughts/suggestions on which direction to go here?

With all due respect, $200 is not going to get you anything, or at least anything worth while.

I'd suggest checking out Canuck Audio Mart for used gear.

I spend the majority of my listening time with a Cambridge amp with built in DAC, so I just run my laptop through the amp.

I have another system that I use for vinyl but I'm lazy these days and I find the convenience of being able to use my computer for music is so handy. And I can pretty much find anything I want to hear, when I want to hear it.

Great for those of us with a short attention span.

Oh, so unless I'm willing to spend close to $1K like your Cambridge amp I may as well just stop listening to music?

LOL.

Sorry dude but that sounds SO pretentious.

Anyways, I've found a few receivers in the $200 range that get great reviews and I'm sure it'll do just fine. I guess Tribe is for rich yuppies now.

I picked up my amp for $600 but you can find used models in the $300 - $350 range.

I guess I should have been more specific in my post. What I should have said is that you may want to consider spending a bit more to find something that meets all your needs.

Good to hear you're finding some options .

Wasn't trying to be a music snob so apologies it came across that way.

I'm waiting on what I hope is a pretty decent commission cheque this month so will see what the budget allows - I want to upgrade my tv also :)

God I love new toys... :D

Everyone has a different ear, and music is so subjective.

I've listened to so many systems over the years but I still have my 25 year old paradigm speakers and they sound as good as a lot of the speakers I've heard that cost 10x as much.

It's whatever sounds good to you and there is no right or wrong. Just what you like.

Quick little update, ended up going with a basic Yamaha R-S201, what a difference from my crappy old sony mini system, lol. Nice to hear what my speakers are actually capable of now!! :D

Looking to try and find a gently used pair of Totem Rokk speakers for what I call my "front room".

Main system is in the basement but as the weather gets nicer, I find myself spending more time in my front room and basking in the sun in the afternoon.

Nothing fancy up front but a simple amp that I can run my laptop through and decent, quality speakers.
