Ted Demme director of Blow & The Ref - dead at 38

The Associated Press
SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) Ted Demme, a film and television director whose credits include the film "Blow," died after playing basketball. He was 38.
Demme was participating in a celebrity basketball game at the private Crossroads School when he was stricken Sunday, said Ted Braun, a spokesman for Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center.

Paramedics rushed Demme to the hospital's emergency room in full cardiac arrest. He was pronounced dead 20 minutes later.

The cause of death has not been determined and an autopsy will be conducted, said Lt. Cheryl MacWillie of the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office.

Demme, a nephew of director Jonathan Demme, directed Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz in last year's "Blow." The film was based on the true story of George Jung, who was the American connection to the Colombian cocaine cartel in the late 1970s and early '80s when the drug became hip.

Demme, who lived in West Hollywood, also directed the 1996 film "Beautiful Girls" and was a director on the 1999 television series "Action."

His uncle, Jonathan Demme, was director of the 1991 film "Silence of the Lambs," which won the Oscar for best picture. He also directed the films "Philadelphia," "Married to the Mob" and "Something Wild."

Is it just me or does anyone think it's kind of distasteful to state the achievements of his uncle, when he's done some good work of his own?

From the Ministry of his work should stand and speak on its own.

I thought the same thing too. Can't think of any other specific examples, but I do not like when the news reports items that, really, are of no relevance to the story, but because they involve someone famous, they are reported as a side note.

Cheers ... Ian

shame, I liked both the Ref and Blow

not to sound flippant or anything, but I am sort of wondering what the chances are that his myocardial infarction was brought on by something other than just playing basketball?

be interesting to hear what the autoposy/tox reports say...

I believe he was charged with some drug offences sometime last year on some drug charges and it happened either before blow got released, or while it was being shot.

From the Ministry of it wouldn't surprise me

vidman, you're thinking of Traffik.

Blow was the one starring Johnny Depp as a coke dealer, married to Penelope Cruz.

In the commercials for Blow, there was a really funny scene where a guy says "i...can't...feel...my...face."

its also a true story, and it comes off as a real trajedy.

Damn....that is young...
And yes, BLOW was an excellant movie.
Probably one of the few movies where J.Depp was 'semi-normal'.

I heard about this on Stern today
How tragic - he was so young!

I really liked Blow - and Beautiful girls - he was a talented director.
