However was playing the house before Tall Paul came off was kinda blahy I thought..

just as it would get good he'd jack it down..

Tall Paul played a pretty sweet set from what I heard. I had been trying to see him for awhile and I finally did. It was nice and trancey yet still icluded some house elements..
if he threw some hhc in there it would have been a perfect set..

Nice to see some tbksers out, big ups the presrinking crew

big downs to slutty roomates who leave their roomate at Tonic and thus they have to take a $40 cab ride home

Fuck, that's harsh. You'll just have to repay the favor!

And what was all this business about it being a Smirnoff sponsored night? Anything new/different at tonic to be attributed to that?

All I can say is that their logo on the flyer was horribly ugly - both in composition and colour - bad bad bad printing.

Prolly has something to do with the Smirnoff commercial they shot there a while back.

sweet! great music, smooth transitions between styles, and it was great how he lead up nicely to a couple of sweet trancey tunes from the butt-shakin' hard house. I danced so much I stopped sweating, but I just kept on moving!

I agree with Joey on the opening DJ...it was ok but kinda mellow

Tall Paul was great and....yes...he's TALL.I went over after his set to give some congrats...nice guy and met the owner Jim in the dj booth too.I couldn't chat long with Paul because the chicks were bugging him but that was ok.

I didn't know WHO was spinning after Paul but he was great too.

Even though i am on holidays this week, i was getting tired and left around 3:30am.Ran into some friends there too which I always love to see.

I know the glowsticks were overwhelming BUT I love 'em.I even brought my own because I didn't know they were handing them out...

But all in all a fun night

Evil P opened for Tall Paul. I was listening in at home. He was kind of "blah". He is usually very sharp, but I found him to be stale last night. Passed out after TP's third track...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Tall Paul owned. Even though it was a bit commercial, that Get Your Muzikizum On bootleg rocked! He had a good range of styles going, and he kept it strong the whole way through. Wish he could have been there for longer, but at least his set was all peak stuff. Evil P afterwards was ok, not what I'm used to hearing from him, but lots of good tracks I haven't heard in a while which was nice.

Tall Paul was PANTS!!!
oh god what a crappy set
played a few good tracks like the new Brancaccio and Aisher, Vaiio but thats about all that was good from the night...God what an OVERRATED DJ!!! I TRIED to get into his set many times but i just COULD NOT DO THAT! NO FLOW WHATSOEVER! Jumping from a deep prog. house track to a trance song in a span of a few minutes! HORRIBLE PROGRAMMING! NO DIRECTION! Just played a bunch of half-decent tunes. Thats about all i can say! I thought he SUCKED!!! I wish Evil P was allowed to stay on for the whole night! Ah well, Hawtin, Emerson/YOUSEF, Graham and Carl Cox are coming up soon at Tonic so all is not lost...

I must agree with Special K. What a fucking let down as far as I'm concerned. I got to Tonic early and was pleased to see the place busy. I haven't been to Tonic in a while and I saw lots of familiar faces as well as new ones. Overall a good vibe for the evening.

Sorry....for those who don't know...Evil P rocked the house. Don't front on a good local. He played a much different set than the old System fare. Evil P had me moving in anticipation for the special DJ of the night. I am reading these reviews of Evil P saying he was just ok....did the drugs not kick in yet? He was wikked!

You know when you were a kid riding your bike around doing the block doing skids by breaking really, really hard and grinding your tire against the cement? Can you remember the sound your tire made when you caught a flat and the air would escape through a puncture?

I think it sounded something like this:

FFFFFFFfffffffffffffffttttt.

Sorry folks....that's just what Tall Paul was....FLAT. There is no way on earth this guy is worth the money that was paid to get him into town. You can take that money...and send him back.

And what was that bullshit remix I heard of Missy Elliot's "Git Your Freak On?" Now this dude is starting to look like a skid mark.

Jesus save us all....

I left and went to Limelight although my friends kept saying...please stay it will get better.

God bless Richie Hawtin!

Cut N Paste from another post:

Went with high expectations to catch one of better known DJ's in the world. I've never really heard much prior to this performance about his sets, but I knew that some of his most recent productions were pretty good. Top that off with the fact that he has a huge fan base, and that all should combine for a very good night ... right???

WRONG!

Damn, I was miserably disappointed with this DJ who is considered to be in the upper echelon of DJ's by some. YES, he did play some excellent tracks, but being a big DJ is not simply about the tracks you have, but more so how you blend those tracks together. His programming and flow were AWFUL!!! I went with Special K, and I lost count of how many times we would look over at one another after a bad choice of songs! Wow, I couldn't believe my ears when he mixed out of Vaiio's Rapture AT THE BEGINNING OF THE BREAK!!! DISASTERS!!!

To top it off, I'm guessing the fact that TALL PAUL is such a well-known DJ, he brought out a lot of ... losers/ginos. OK, I know it's not right for me to say that, but it's those clowns that come to these events, and get totally smashed, or totally high, not for one second trying to enjoy the music, but more so the fact that they're getting fucked up. They ruin the vibe inside the club bouncing off of people on the dancefloor, and not even noticing it. To top things off, there are a million and one glow sticks flying around the club, HORRIBLE!!! It's really sad what our scene has become.

Well, Tall Paul was a disappointment, but I highly doubt Richie Hawtin, Darren Emerson, Yousef, Max Graham, or Brad Copeland will disappoint. We'll just have to wait and see.

it's very interesting to read the different opinions about tp.. I'm starting to notice that some more of the critical comments about this show (and others in general) come from people with trained ears. people are able to identify most tracks and the best way (or not) to mix them together. I've only been in these clubs for a couple of years and I guess there's still more I don't know, but to me this show sounded fantastic. I think the biggest reason why people get upset about a show is because they've heard the same stuff done the same way before. It's like we need to be surprised to be satisfied all the time.

And one question about glowsticks - why does everyone hate them so much? I think they look kinda cool!
