Wow. This episode was full of the stupid. But it was very entertaining stupid, culminating in a wild Tribal Council that saw moves and counter-moves, but it all came down to one ridiculous play by a terrible, terrible player.
We begin the episode with the Brains+ tribe returning to camp after eliminating Alexis. They’re discussing how Alexis was crying, and then pivoting to how they are still in control. They’re hoping for a merge and make plans to stick together. Great, episode over, right? Then, we get Kass and Sarah talking, where Kass tells Sarah that she’s worried about her or Jeremiah flipping. WHY DO YOU KEEP DOING THIS, KASS? She did the same thing to J’Tia with negative results, but Kass just can’t help herself. Sarah interviews that she doesn’t like being called a liar and that the surest way to drive her out of the alliance is to accuse her of disloyalty. So, you react to being called disloyal, by … being disloyal? Ok. Sarah reiterates to Kass that she’s with them, and that she thinks the likeliest thing that will break them up is a lack of trust. Kass is shocked that someone is upset that she’s accusing them. Even though this is now the second time it’s happened. Oh well, they’re all good, yay!
And, merge. Tony’s tribe moves to the other camp, with Tony and LJ being sure to gather their idols. Everybody exchanges pleasantries and there’s food and alcohol. There’s also a message that there’s a new idol at camp with ‘special powers’. Hmmm. No idea what that could mean. Maybe you can’t use it for yourself but have to use it on someone else? Tony interviews that the only way to find out the powers is to be the one who finds it. Tony also notes that unless they get Sarah to flip, his tribe is in deep trouble. Tony talks to Sarah and promises her the world (specifically final 4) if she rejoins them. Sarah is non-committal and notably refuses to swear on her badge that she’s with Tony. Bad, bad move. Sarah is thrilled to be “in control”. She sees herself as the one in the middle between two tribes of 5. She does not realize that is a terrible place to be. Yes, you have some power at this specific moment, but you’re making yourself the 6th person on both sides. Control now does not mean control three days from now.
Kass, Jeremiah and Sarah discuss the next vote. Jeremiah and Kass want to target Trish or Jefra, because they’re pretty sure LJ has an idol. Sarah thinks this is boneheaded, she wants to target Tony or LJ as the strongest guys, and she’s convinced they don’t have idols. Based on nothing, mind you. It’s weird, you get some people who are just convinced that their opponents don’t have the immunity idols. It’s like their world-view won’t accept it. Of course, they both have idols, so this is very, very dumb of Sarah. Then she starts insisting that she won’t vote for Trish, because she thinks it’s the wrong choice. This gets Kass going, who is now convinced Sarah is playing for herself.
The next morning, Sarah makes a comment to Kass and Tasha about how people just want her vote, which sets Kass off and they start arguing, which Trish notices and loves. Tasha takes Kass and Sarah aside, and starts playing peacemaker, trying to mollify Sarah. Tasha says she can see both sides and is doing a good job of calming Sarah down. Kass, though? She sees this as a betrayal by Tasha. Tasha should have sided with Kass, and now Kass believes Tasha’s against her too. Oh my god, she’s terrible. Kass completely fails to see that Tasha isn’t playing up to her because Tasha thinks the final three will be Tasha, Spencer and Kass. You mollify Sarah because you need her for the next vote, and then she’s expendable. But Kass says nothing to her alliance, just continues to stew.
Individual immunity involves balancing on a triangular platform in the ocean, the first two stages are irrelevant as everyone makes it to the final stage where you balance on the narrow top of the platform. And everyone is quickly out except for Tony and Woo, with the martial arts instructor Woo as the winner. Now Sarah insists she’s the one to make the decision of who’s going home, and she’s adamant it’s LJ or Tony. The others want Jefra, because of the idol concerns, and Sarah insists that Tony especially doesn’t have an idol, 100%. Tony makes a last play to Sarah to join their side, but Sarah refuses to commit, saying she’ll decide at tribal. STUPID!!! Tony, rightfully, considers Sarah dead to them at that point. Trish therefore makes a play at Kass, asking who Kass would like to get rid of (Sarah, obviously, which Trish knew), and that they’ll go along with that, no problem. Now Kass is claiming she has all the power now, and this is even stupider than Sarah. She’s actually contemplating flipping from a solid position with her allies since the beginning of the game to the bottom of the other tribe, just to show Sarah up. Kass says she’s sure Sarah will destroy the game, so Kass wants to destroy it first. Oh wow. So much stupidity.
And on to the tribal council. The battle lines are pretty clearly drawn and that comes out quickly. The talk turns to idols and LJ is being coy about none having been played up until now. Then, Tony takes the opportunity to admit he has an idol and that he’ll play it for the tribe. Spencer asks if he’ll show them. Tony asks why he’d do that, and Spencer says to show he’s not lying. So, Tony does. Tony’s clearly loving the turmoil this causes, but this is a terribly stupid move. Two stupid moves, actually. Saying he has one and then confirming it. By doing this before the vote, he’s giving the other side time to change things up. The original plan was to vote for Tony, so if he just played it after the vote, he wins. Spencer and his group are saying “go with the other one, the other one” and now Tony’s having to guess their second choice. We vote. Jeff makes the call for idols to be played, and Tony plays things up even more, getting Jeff to confirm the validity and strutting around. Totally loving the attention. Tony plays the idol on LJ, convinced he’s “the other one”. Jeff’s about to begin checking the votes, when LJ pipes up and plays his idol on Tony. This seems dumb too. To my mind, Tony’s probably the one person they didn’t vote for, but LJ’s probably deciding to save the person who saved him. Tony’s side is pretty happy … until Jefra’s name is read as the first vote. Now, it’s Spencer and Tasha looking smug as they’ve clearly outwitted the other side and both idols are now wasted. The votes are Sarah and Jefra, and we’re tied 5-5 with one vote left. Oh man, it’s Sarah. Everybody’s floored and Kass is quickly identified as the flipper. Spencer is furious and says “Kass – zero chance to win now” which Kass responds with “there’s a long way to go”. On the one hand Kass is right, but she’s antagonized the first 4 jury votes which means that effectively Spencer is correct. It’s completely boneheaded where Kass has apparently flipped just because she didn’t like Sarah having a temporary and mostly illusory power. Kass should have been final three, and now she’ll be lucky not to go out in 6th.
Next episode, Kass and Morgan will be taking
