Stranded @ WEMF

Hello all,

I'd first like to say, I heard some people say they had a great time. However this is the story of the Stranded Partiers!!

First most of the promises for the event fell through big time!! There was a beach, but it was in town, there was supposed to be shuttle buses to and from the beach..... didn't happen. Showers? Where?

Now on to the shuttle bus fiasco.
First it started saturday, with the first shuttle bus @ 8:00pm although the flyer said that one would run from noon saturday till midnight saturday every 30 mins!
The drive was advertised as 1.5 hours but as anyone on the bus can confirm it was closer to 3 hours.

So the party was ok i would rank it a 4 out of 10. loved the decoration in the Psy tent and Lori was wicked.

So the morning rolled around and @ about 6:00am we decided to catch the bus to avoid the crowd, but boy were we wrong.

My mom, girlfriend and myself and one other guy were waiting for the bus, which the first was supposed to run @ 6am. On top of this none of the event staff could tell us how often it was running, some said every hour, some every 2.

This was only the starting. We slept on the side of the road as more and more people showed up. 8am 9am 10am and 200 people later the first bus showes up.

This is where the fun really started, everyone stormed the bus, pushing started and the cops started getting mad at everyone and this only raised tension. The cops were going to have us all line up for each bus. But they were yelling and tension in the air lead me to think some 200 people would take down the cops on the next bus.

So my mom started writing numbers on people's hands to organize the crowd, at that point people calmed down a bit, but the over all vibe was still very angry @ times.
The next bus came @ noonish, with the promise of 4 more coming in the next hour(Which was neveer seen). 40 people left on the school bus.

By 1-2 o'clock people were starting to feel the heat, we arranged the guys to come out with water, we asked for free however since it was a hired water company they were talked down to a dollar.

They came out again an hour later handing out free freezes. Which helped with the heat.

I would like to give thanx to the people that lived on corner for giving us free access to there hose and selling pop, pizza.
And to the cops for cooperating with my mothers number system. I spoke with some of the police and some understanding was displayed by them, however some still saw us as criminals.

Another bus came around 2 at this time we had tagged 331 people with numbers.
Taxis came charging 160 dollars to go to Toronto(split between 4). I saw a hand full of taxis, and about 10-15 people left taking the taxis.

We meet a guy that had no more money and had to get back to catch a train/bus home. I switched numbers with him as I was on the next bus. And i caught the next one.

To add injury to the situation a destiny promoter tried to get one of the buses diverted to the after party, we said no.

However later the promoter spoke to a bus driver and that bus was going to the afterparty, which I was told no one took them up on.

In the end, I was hoping this was going to be a great event, however I got home @ 6:30pm after spending 12 1/2 hours in the scorching sun.
I heard alot of people complaining however I will let they tell there stories instead of getting a rumor milll going.

I would like to ask on the behalf of all the shuttle bus users. What went wrong? Where was Destiny when it was time to leave? Why were we left in the hands of the cops?

I saw a number of news vans show up (New VR. Newsline?) I have still yet to see the news but I have a feeling this will just but another nail against us as trouble makers BLAH BLAH, we have heard this before from the media, but I think alot went down this weekend. I heard something about someone getting arrested, but I would like to hear from
Destiny the story(The Truth) an apology as I am sure some of those 300 people will not trust Destiny in the future.

Destiny why were we left stranded?

it's scary to see that the 3-day shuttle busses from hell are still in full force!
i was unfortunate enough to experience this at wemf '98. first it took about 8 hrs to get there (christian island) from yorkdale, and about 2.5 hrs were actually on the bus.
thats not even counting the 6hr wait to get on the fairy, then the other 2 hrs to get to the actual location on the island.
on our way back when the 3-day was over, it took about 4 hrs to get off the island which wasnt bad at all. but then we had to wait for about 6 more hrs for the shuttle bus to arrive. No one ever knows when they are arriving or leaving, and no one is ever around for any information at this point. its funny that your mom made a number system, cause thats exactly what happend to us.
I vowed NEVER EVER EVER IN THE HISTORY OF EVER TO TAKE ANOTHER SHUTTLE BUS IN MY LIFE!
I was mentally afraid of large line-ups after this experience. (even after all of this, that was still one of the best weeknds i have ever had)
thats why i say arrive early, leave early, and get a car!

sorry you had to experience this though, you'd think destiny would try to fix this problem over the years..?

thankfully I stopped doing the shuttle bus thing many years ago.
It was fun 6 years ago when you would go downtown and get on a bus not knowing where you were going. Then I got a car and all that stopped.
Although I did take the shuttle to wemf 96. It hink it was the last shuttle bus I ever took. No problems with it though.

okay, a couple things.

i was one of the stranded ones, for 2 and a half hours--although i did get on the first bus, primarily because i stormed through bushes and clouds of pollen and got scratched up a bit. my primary motivating factor, though, wasn't getting on the first bus--it was NOT letting the ghetto hoodrats (well, suburb-rats) who made fun of me like it was high school the whole weekend get on the first bus and leave me waiting for 4 hours. i didn't think there were 200 people there, it didn't look like that many to me. i thought at least most of the rest of the people waiting would get on the second bus that arrived just as mine left.

hmm. i was the last one in a group of 5, and i had no idea how many were on the bus at the time. i was SURE they were going to say thats it and close the door while the ghetto rats laughed at me... so i stood all nervous, waiting for them to let me on, and i was talking with someone who had been there since 7 am. three and a half hours. i kinda hope they got on the next bus. or even that one; it ended up being half full when i got on.

anyway.

as far as the showers, beach and such, i think the flyers were printed with a different venue in mind. obviously you can't change the flyers. when rumors of a shutdown went around at nathan philips about 11 on friday night, i called the infoline and they said to check the website, which i'd done half an hour before, and it didn't say anything.

oh yeah.. i wouldn't worry too much about VR News... maybe they'll keep all of muskoka and haliburton and the kawartha lakes living in terror that such a rave-party will swoop down unexpected on their quiet towns too, but it shouldn't impact the toronto scene very much. plus, VR is associated with City-TV (i think) and might be more positive than you'd expect.

wow, that was pretty much my experience in '98... i skipped the shuttle up there but was around for most of the crap that went on for the return trip. didn't get home til midnight after having been up with no sleep from friday morning

the worst bottleneck was that fucking ferry though... i remember wanting to kill the security dorks in charge of loading the ferry because they were being beyond stupid. here we were at the front of this enourmous fat-azz line waiting for this next ferry to arrive and a whole pile of people swing around the side to get on before us... and the security turns their backs on them and yells at *US* for pushing!... so a whole load of about a hundred people go rushing up the plank and we had to wait for the next one. fucking awful.

never again.

My story:

My friend and I reached the shuttle bus stop at 7.50am. From then until 11am I passed out on the lovely, sticky road. A nice lady (aka Orpheous9's mom) took charge, asked us if it would be a good idea to have numbers, everyone agreed, so numbers were given. We were # 101 & 102. A school bus arrives, the cops are calling the numbers... the last person to get on was freikin 96!!!! I had been waiting for 5 hours now, and I had to wait another f*kin' 2-5 hours for the next bus.

So a friend sees me and tells me that cabs are going to Toronto for a flat rate of $140-160. So we catch a cab to Toronto (it's 2pm now), and even though she will never see this, I wanna thank the nice lady who drove us back to civilization (it was 4pm) and had to put up with shit when we got there. Beverley, if you're reading this, THANX!!
tongue.gif

Also wanna thank Orpheous9's mom for taking charge and not put up with more bullshit from those vest-wearing, glock-on-the-belt cops.

On a lighter note, the chicken tried to peck my head!!

stories from hell eh?

well i didnt take a shuttle but it still took me 14 hours after leaving sarnia to get into the party!

car breaks down in london (a whole hour away from sarnia) and we are stranded there for like 3 hours if not a bit more, end up getting a rental car in the end anywayz and yadda yadda...

get the map point FINALLY and then drive around for 4 fuckin hours trying to get even close to the party... whic then in turn we finally do, park, walk to the hugeass lineup... by pass most of it by being bitches and walking right past everyone in line... then wait over an hour to get in...

so in total 14 hours.
and trust me those 14 hours were FOREVER!!!

As soon as I saw the shuttle bus line, I knew I was never going to get on that bus. So eight of us got together and ordered a limousine. Trust me, it was well worth the cash to ride in style.

The VR guy was a prick. He started to interview me, and as I was talking about how this party would have been so much safer if the public worked with, and not against us, and about how raves are nothing like their media portrayal, and how the police supervisors were just showing off for the cameras, the asshole turned the camera awy from me!!!! I asked him: "so I guess the truth would fuck up your whole story about evil raves, huh? You need to preserve your lie so you can money from big headlines, right?!", and he said yes! Asshole. Did you also notice how they didnt film the nice locals that gave us their garden hose, and sold us pop and pizza? All the cameras were focused on the guy across the street who hated us.

It's things like this that stop me from getting a job in the media.

I know man i taped it !!! Record the past so we may remember in the future :p
The metro (transit paper) did a fair article on the party.
One quote said " You won't believe how much we have sould (pop, water) but when they came in here they were very quiet, no trouble at all, I know a lot of older people are complaining but really they were no trouble"

However on the other hand i think they interviewed the guy across the street, he sai he doesn't want to use his last name because "you don't know what they might do".

I have pictures of the cops talking to people in line and the media. once i develop them i'm going to post them on neksis and techno.xvi

The shuttle buses pulled a big prickshot with us on Saturday. Because of the distance of Wemf, they pulled half of their buses for us on Friday and Saturday. And even upped the price.

AS far as them being late on Sunday. We've always had a problem with this. At every single Wemf. I was constantly trying to get a hold of the broker all Sunday morning. But its a Sunday morning, who's going to be in the office waiting for calls and/or orders. We finally contacted someone at about 10. And they sent one and told us that theyre only sending one every 2.5 hours.

If there is a Wemf in the future, we strongly reccomend travelling by vehicle. You can rent a car for $20.00 a day, and its worth all the hassle it will save you guys. And on behalf of Destiny we truly are sorry for any inconvenience we put you guys in. Obviously it wasnt deliberate, but these bus brokers are bitches and dont really give a shit about tired sketched out ravers as much as they should. But primarily its due to the fact that in the past ravers have torn up and vandalized their buses that it gets harder and harder to rent out. I believe theres only 1 or 2 companies that will do it, because if instances in the past.

Any more questions, feel free to email me.

I would have rented a car if I had a driver's license. But I don't...and neither did the friend I was travelling with. We were on the 7 PM shuttle bus (actually 7:30) that got lost. The driver didn't seem to be able to follow the directions (he had a compass!), and almost got us hit by a truck... so there was a mass exodus as we all decided to get out of the bus on some lonely dark road and find WEMF ourselves.

The worst of it for me, though, was the teenage-dickhead attitude in evidence. I felt quite old being on that bus as it was (I'm 25, everyone else looked 17). The driver looked Pakistanian or Indian, and during the last part of the trip when everyone was yelling at him, trying to direct him, some little prick behind me decided to yell "immigrant!" I turned around and told him to shut the fuck up, as did a few other people on the bus (but not enough, IMO). His friends replied with a chorus of "Fuck you's!" Huh? I'm not allowed to show my repulsion for someone's racism?

A big reason why I don't attend lots of rave/dance events is that I can't deal with teenage attitude. I also got enough of it from some whiny girl in line yelling at us for "butting"...when I tried explaining to her that we were not, she just kept on yelling at random strangers (who ignored her anyway) and her friend claimed -I- was trying to start shit.

Maybe I'm ageist, I dunno...but I thought that the kids in this scene would be a little more chilled out and open-minded...PLUR and all that. Guess not.

Well I guess I was lucky enough that I didn't encounter any of that "childish" behaviour that U had to deal with from the bus ride from HELL.Maybe they SHOULD put an age restriction at these parties like 19 or even 21 and over.CTV asked their viewers one of these daily phone in questions to make Raves "safe".BUT where will the UNDER 19 go to listen and party to this scene???...Its a tough call....
Ryan@Destiny mentioned possibly renting cars INSTEAD of taking the shuttle buses.Only problem with that is that u need a major credid card to rent a car AND a drivers license which some of these teens don't have yet so those buses are a MUST for some to get to any future events like WEMF.Its too bad that a FEW idiots have to spoil it for the majority.Vandalizing buses isn't going to help our scene so IF you're one of those people that vandalize buses OR act like pre-school kids IN those buses then you DON'T and NEVER will belong in our part of the electronic music scene...

THAT is all

but what coming back!....

i was out at the end of the parking lot around 6:20am on the sunday waiting for the bus. others were out there since 6am and b4 with no site of a bus. atound 6:45am a yell told us to head to the other end of the street to catch the bus. (we had been directed by destiny ppl to the side we were at). so we ran down the streets and main entrance and scrabled to opposing ends road block.

the oop officer told us no bus had come yet and we waited until 9 before we planned our escape. the realization that we were stranded and numbers of ppl were growing made a team of us pannik. we came up with calling for buss's to come but they dont contract them out on the spot like that, cab (they directed us to bobcaygeons service which was of no use) and nothing else would fly. the last call i made from a long distance call from a ohio guys phone (i lsot mine wemf) was to home to ask for a ride from my dad.

by 12:30pm i was on my way home. over 6 hours waiting on the road like a piece or road kill.

no apollogies or explanations did i ever see realy from wemf for this. round ticket my ass! "vastly improved shutle bus service from previous years"-destiny B.S

orpheus9, glad you made it back. i was wondering how everyone was going to come back. hitch hiking girls at 6:30am were not getting picked up so if it were not for the cops..eek

the 2nd bus that came around 11:30 was the one to ottawa. i dunno when the buses started to realy show up

errr... is there any reason to trust them?

I have been away on tour, so have not had a chance to respond until now.

The bus service this year was definitely not what we spent over $20,000 to provide. The bus company lied to us from the beginiing and then ripped us off to boot. They basically sent about half the number of buses we paid for and then made up lame excuses all weekend that basically blamed the kids for not being in the right place or traffic (Saturday night? Ya right!!). When we asked for a refund they basically told us to take a hike and taking them to court would cost more than the actual amount we paid...

We understand that the blame for this cannot be shifted away from us however and we definitely accept the fact that we made a mistake in dealing with this company. Obviously we will try to ensure that we find a more reputable company in the future.

Destiny, plz keep us posted on the case.

the missing headliners and such was bad but not being able to get home was the worst. no one realy knows the bus companies (heck we tried call them) and ppl had only your word on how the service would be. your the one who looks soley to blame.

hopefully the court decission will help straighten out your name.
