Steve Lawler at System

This is a cut 'n paste of the review I put on the Global Underground board...

Okay, what can be said... He totally blew me away!!! I was dead tired and sober (yes drinking would have helped cure my hangover, but I didn't want anything to interfere with my listening to Lawler) and I did not stop dancing for one second. I stayed at the back (on that little ledge area) and completely danced my ass off (sorry to anyone if I seemed anti-social, but last night was all about Steve Lawler... very, VERY impressive. In fact, I really like his NuBreed CD, but last night he simply kicked the sh#t of that.) He dropped the perfect amount of new/ unheard of tracks while keeping it recognizable for most of the night. If he ever comes back to Toronto, I will definitely go out of my way to see him again. Respect to Breathe, the people who came out and contributed to the party, and of course, to Steve... very well done!!!

Jay.

Oh, does anyone have any info on the track he played (maybe 2 hours into his set) with a vocal that says something like "They know what is what, but they don't know what is what. They just strut... What the F@ck?" Wow, what a track!!!

Yeah, likewise Nesta...good to finally put a face to the name.

lawler kicked some serious ass...I was more than impressed with his set...especially when he dropped Schiller's "Das Glockenpiel" (thanks Coleridge for the track ID)...shit, what a sweet track!

It was also good to see Suke, Libradragon, J-Man, Tack, and Coleridge again...my night wouldn't have been so good if you guys hadn't shown up.

Peace
Chris

wow- that was one of- if not the best sets i've heard.

the set was in my all time favourite style- it rivalled digweed's set back in march.
i could not stop dancing to save my life.

very impressed with the improved vibe at system on fridays.

crouse- aquaviva spun that track last week at turbo- blew the roof off the place- i heard it's a mix of a new fatboy slim track(believe it or not- i'm not sure i do!).

cheers to everyone who witnessed it last night and shame on thoso who didn't.

I've only heard it once before (I think it was Dean Wilson who dropped it when he was in town a few months back) and I've heard it's Fatboy Slim, but you're right... I can't believe it. It has such a solid groove to it. If it really is Fatboy Slim, maybe he's taking his production in a new direction?!?

...and to me, he topped Digweed back in March (and I'll admit, Diggers is my all-time favourite) But it's been years since I've been dying of thirst and honestly could not pull myself away from the dancefloor to refill my water bottle. (that says something)

And Suke was there??? I must have been off in my own world of musical bliss. As it was I didn't run into JMan and LibraDragon until I was walking out.

Holy f@#king s%^t!!!!!!
Steve Lawler's set has gotta be the set of the year to this point.
No word of a lie.

Oh by the way...that track (They know what is what...) is a Star 69 remix of Fat Boy Slim...believe it 'cuz it's true.

Sister Bliss dropped it when she was here three weeks ago.

Also...the last track Deko-ze played was his own production piece fresh of the vinyl cutter.

Bo!!!!

It just came to me....
The track is called "Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars".
It's a Fatboy Slim track.
The remix is by Star 69.

they just strut, what the f*ck!!

wicked track & a wicked evening...dark, tribally & twisted with even a little uptempo progressive near the end...its a shame they shut down so early, but lawler was definitley on top form...got there a little late, (which is better than expected as i wasn't even sure i was going to be there at all) & moved around from the front to the back & all spots in between...

not much of a review, but i haven't been to bed yet, & have to get out to another hallowe'en event this evening...definitely one of the top sets of the year...

kudos to a job well done, Breathe...

Just quickly checked on Napster for this track, and what do you know, I'm downloading from djcheezwhiz as I speak.

Ah, it's so nice to hear how well Lawler did! Good to hear that he did drop some killer deep, dark Tribal grooves to get everyone on their toes, happy that he kicked ass! It sucks so much how I can't get into clubs...I should get a fake ID, eh?

Steve Lawler played the most mind-bendingly dark and tribal set I have ever heard.
Like Crouse said...Sasha & Digweed are/were two of my favourite Djs but now I have a new one.
Steve Lawler's set was easily the best set I've heard this year of all the progressive DJs who've played Toronto.
3 1/2 hours of heaven on earth.

Oh and the Lawler remix of Cevin Fisher's track "Love U Some More" is sweeeeet!!!

Steve Lawler : one word - exhilarating.

His set started off on the rather slow side for me, it wasn't bad, but it wasn't spectacular - although that may be due to my high expectations. I wasn't worried though, since i was sure he was just setting the tone for the night and sure enough, halfway through his set the beats became darker, tribal beats in full effect.

Thanks to MikeTwisted for Lawler's Nubreed sampler CD. Keep up the great work - System never looked better.
