Got there at 2. Stayed 'till 3. Spent most of my time in the coat check blob (not even close to a line). Carter sounded good, too bad there was no room to dance whatsoever. Sweaty, not to smiley, loaded people everywhere. Someone please remind me never to go to Life when there's a big House DJ spinning again. Pure Gross!

I went because I wasnt paying any money to go- and the aditition of Greg Gow fighting with a name I canrt remember right now- on 4 decks- just sweetened the deal.
Showed up around 11:30ish- and it was already fairly packed. Myka - Im really digging his musical stylings. He threw down one of the new South Souls- and I was surprised to hear him playing around with some techno earlier on.
Carter finally came on at some point- but a combination of me being drunk and having to resist SATAN himself in extremely hot-t-t-t-t girl form (I have a girlfriend and pride my self in my good morals) the night became wierd. I danced as much as I could. Even though there was no room to dance- I found it really easy to clear my self a space by just dancing normally.
What was with the STINK in the main room? B.O. Ode de stinky clubbers. It really did stink in there. Since when did the ciggerette smoke stop covering that shit up?
Overall- the night was good. Chilling with my friends- amusing our selves at clubbers (we came to the conclusion that the only way Gino's can get in touch with there feminine side is to dance to gay house) - dancing to so wicked house ala Carter and the night closing off with Greg Gow made the whole evening perfect almost. House IS good for a change.

What a nite!

Myka's set started my nite off great. He really knows how to get the crowd pumped.

By the time Carter came on there was no room to dance. So I ventured into the back room. Who was that girl spinning? She was great! My friends and I ended up stayin in the back room for the rest of the nite.

I had a good nite but I was very disapointed with all the attitude! What the hell?! If it wasnt for the back room I would have left right after Myka's set. Why can't people just have a good time?! I agree w/ThePlunger..don't go to Life when a 'big house DJ' is spinning!

I didn't get there until about 1:45am, but it was so hot by that point that you couldn't move in the main room! I managed to stand around suffocating until 5am, but it was pretty tough. Derrick Carter was amazing, but it was a shame that you couldn't really enjoy it in the middle of the crowd... you had to stand in the periphery in order to breathe (at least I did, I wasn't prepared to fight with everyone for air).

The whole night was worth it though when I was getting my coat around 5am and Derrick Carter played Cricco Castelli's "Life Is Changing."

I really wish they'd get some better ventilation in Life though!

i got there around 1am after wating outside for a loooong ass time.
anyway, myka had some good mixings going, and hyped up myself..ready to dance to mr. carter!
i was left side of the dj booth, and somehow, it was not slippery there on the floor to dance, so i stayed there for most of the nite..
it was great to dance to his tunes, and his mixings made me go crazy! lol
i got all sweatie and was dancing non-stop that is a fun thing cause if the music suck, then that does not happen
tongue.gif

anyway, it was nice to finally meet nichole and ronnie.

Had a good time...but it was definately too hot in there, and very packed. Carter held the crowd longer than any dj I've seen at Life. Played a little harder than I've seen him before, but I liked it...

Myka held his own before Carter...very impressed...

Had to leave around 5 so didn't catch Greg Gow and Dez's set...

Didn't mind the crowd, thought it was a lot better than at Lafleche...but yeah, I'd agree with ThePlunger about not going to Life with a big House dj...

Overall a good night...

Aside from the aforementioned heat and the fact this party was the biggest sword fight 'EVAR', I thought that Derrick Carter was spot on. I got there around 1am, to an already hot, sweaty and stanky club. The coat check issues didn't please me in the slightest either. 1am, at an afterhours club, and the coat check was full? Give me a break.
Myka, had the crowd very hyped for D.Carter. I was thoroughly impressed with his track selection and skillz. I found his set better than the one he threw vs. Lafleche. He has re-affirmed himself as one of my favorite local DJ's around. Respect.
Derrick Carter impressed me even more with his thumping, deep, hard and sexy DETROIT House. I was dancing the whole night and would have danced harder had I not been sweating like 'smokey in a chicken coop'
wink.gif
. His set was filled with disco beats, various horns and was just very groovy. Great track selection as well, as I was pleasantly surprised to hear a mix of Michael Jackson's 'Off the Wall'.

Nesta, thanks again bro for the hook ups and for some chilling on Saturday afternoon. I saw you quickly inside the club, but was too hot and messed up to really say much. We'll do it up again bro, soon and fo' sho'.

Detroit what.

Peace and love,

We reached Life at approximately 2:30am, thinking that we were going to avoid any sort of a 'wait'. LOL... twenty minutes later we were inside the venue. I then waited in coat check for almost half an hour only to be told that coat check was full !

I paid my $25 and as soon as I handed the dude at the door my ticket... I entered 'the spa'. Derrick Carter was already on the decks in the main room which was absolutely RAMMED, and there was this girl spinning in the back room which was not as packed but it sure was oozing with a 'chem' vibe.

Derrick played his typical funky-chunky house with some decent build-ups and it was quite obvious that people were having a great time. It was around 4am when he dropped that 'Price Is Right' tune... that track sucks, and I also noticed a lot of faked enthusiasm but I must say that he definitely compensated with the following 10 tracks. He dropped these two horn tracks that had me fucking jamming like I was back in the Klub Max-bell bottom-peaked hair days.

Several devil reefers later... I wandered off into the back room. That chick dj was dropping some killer tunes. It was around 5:15am and the room was bouncing. I ran into some old friends, caught up on old times and got reaaaaally stoned. (Marc, that hydro was unreal).

I ventured into the main room, jonsing to hear Greg Gow battle Dez... but it seemed as though Derrick Carter was going to play until the lights went on. We got tired of waiting and decided to leave around 5:45am

Did Greg Gow and Dez end up touching down ?

Overall, I had a good time... but please, Life, use some profits and get a better ventilation system or even some oscillating fans.... the heat is unbearable. (all night I was smelling 'lightning' and 'avalanche').

I agree with what everyone is saying so i won't go on about the insane heat( i ad to concentrate on breathing), and smelly people. Unfortunately i didnt get to see Myka cuz we got their late but Derrick Carter was spinning some good tunes, so good that i had to groove on the dance floor until i felt like i was gonna pass out. The night went well except there where too many guys in wife beaters showing off their "pecs"--yucky, and my messed up friend got his glasses stolen off his face which ended the night badly
frown.gif
It would be nice to go out and party with people that have some respect--anywho that is my 2 cents

Yeah, that tune sucks ass. I'll watch TV if I want to hear it. The faked enthusiasm? You couldn't have been more accurate. I was just trying to keep a bit of a groove going, but kind of stood around and watched everyone until the track was done. What up to the horns, and the Michael Jackson track was thrown in around that time as well.

I left after D.Carter finished his set, but the DJ who started right after sounded like he was picking it up quite nicely.

I was reminded why I don't go to Life once again... when am I gonna learn??
It is too bad too because Carter was great. It was super frustrating though cuz all I wanted to do was dance my ass off but as EVERYONE has pointed out it was too damn hot!
It was great to catch up with people I hadn't seen in a while, and to meet new ones

Here is my synopsis of the party:

1. Derrick Carter was amazing. What a tasty, groovy house set. Loved the horns, loved the changes of pace. Nice edge on his music. A great change from the typical prog sets I hear.
2. Myka—what a great warm-up set. Some serious tracks to get the crowd going. He’s definitely got great skills.
3. The girls that were there were cute. The problem was that it was 80% guys, as usual.
4. Please, spend some money and ventilate the place. Get a bigger coat check. No excuse for that stupidity.
5. Overall, one of the best nights I’ve had at Life. DC definitely attracted a better crowd than normal. I haven’t ever seen Life that rammed before.

Looking very forward to what will surely be a great night at the Guv this Thursday.

Hey Peeps,

Thanks for the feedback.

It was my birthday on Saturday and I wanted to have one of my favourite DJs play for me. (Unfortuneately Kenny was on tour.)

It just so happens that Derrick is one of the best DJs in the world and has a huge following. Therefore the club was packed. In any packed club, it gets sweaty especially if there is a good vibe and people are dancing alot.

These are actually the best type of parties in my opinion.

I also read posts from people who say "the DJ was great, but I wish there were more people." at other party review boards often.

I am sure that Derrick will be playing larger venues in the future, but they may be packed as well. (I wouldn't want Derrick to play a venue too large that wasn't full.)

The coat check problem is the same at any club that is rammed (and only during the winter) ... including Industry and Buzz that I part-founded, and most other clubs existing in the city.

This week Halo from H-Foundation, Trunkids, and 6400 crew will be playing. I don't think it will be quite as packed though. (He doesn't have the same cult following, but he definately is hyped.)

Halo used to be a regular at Dose and Lifeforce events, and is one of the creators of that future dark and techy house sound. DJs like Myka, Kenny Glasgow, Tim Patrick, . Peter & Tyrone, Stretch and Hooker all play H-Foundation religously.

If I can find a link on the internet I'll post it.

I'd like to invite everyone who remarked to this topic to be my guest this Saturday. Just email mwepublicrelations@hotmail.com by Saturday 6PM and mention your real name and your Alias on Tribe. You will be put on the b4 1am free guest list +1 (reduced after 1am.)

It won't be as packed, and if it is at least you didn't have to spend any money and you can leave

Cheers to mr. Most Wanted, I might just take you up on that offer.

However, I think the ventilation claims are still valid... I don't remember clubs like Turbo or System getting as hot and stuffy as Life gets, so I assume it's due to the ventilation systems involved. Ventilation has to be one of the most important (and costly) factors in designing a club, so did they just forget about it at Life? It's perfectly reasonable to ask the owners to upgrade whatever system they have though, as the heat really is detrimental to the club. The heat itself is not so much a problem as the fact that the air by 3am is completely stale and recycled... it's garbage.

Having said that however, when's the last time any of us got a club owner to spend MORE money? Good luck.

Mr. 1zt .... thanks. That's a very nice offer.

I may have to take you up on that... but beware, ... you may be forced to smoke some of my uhhhh.... you know... ummmmm.... devils reefer in return for the favour.

Also, I agree with Doublecross. I think you and MWE have an excellent vision and you constantly bring in groundbreaking and established talent... I enjoy attending your functions with only one fair complaint, heat.

It's something that could even be fixed by having fans maybe on both sides of the dj booth... even just circulation of the air would be better. Maybe put a couple fans in the back too... facing the back of the crowd.
I'm not 'knocking' anything... just a suggestion that I feel will make you and yours that much better.

just my two cents.
