Star Wars : The Force Awakens

How do you guys even know Phasma's name? Her character was not interesting or important to the story in any way.

I did enjoy the competitive relationship between Snope's two henchmen, Kylo Ren and General Hux. It will be interesting to learn more about that, as we learn more about Snope and the leadership of the First Order.

Now that I've seen the movie, I've also watched the current commercials and latest trailers. I am SO happy that I avoided the latest trailers, as they show too much of the movie. I don't want to know beforehand that there's a scene where Kylo Ren holds his lightsaber to Rey's throat, or that Finn will have a lightsaber duel with a stormtrooper.

I got Scotiabank IMAX tickets for all my nephews on Dec. 28, as part of their Xmas presents, so that's when I will see it again. :)

If you told me a year ago that Episode 7 would feature no Jedi and have no skilled lightsaber fight, but would still arguably be the best movie in the series (given that our standards for storytelling, acting and choreography are much higher today than in the 70s and 80s), I would not have believed you.

AWESOME.

She is so going to be Luke's kid.

The best 3D I have seen yet. My eye's didn't hurt or get tired.

Going to see it again tomorrow. Because I can.

Pretty sure everybody knew the outcome of Han or Solo. Got so little crowd reaction compared to so much else.

"What about that ship?"
"That's a piece of junk"

If Empire the Strikes Back was made today by JJ that would be the best movie. Know what I mean?

I really loved this film.

Now for a dump of misc. comments:

- I love Rey's character. She's like a young mash-up of Han Solo and Luke Skywalker. The girl who played her did a fantastic job and I've heard it's her first major role in anything.
- I feel the need to hunt down all of the extended universe stuff that's out there. Too much of a gap in the events that have occurred between ROTJ and this film other than Han's 30 second recap of what happened to Luke and the First Order (Reich) speech that gave hints of there being a new galactic republic that it seems the First Order is trying to overthrow from the outside.
- Rey is totally Luke Skywalker's daughter (IMO). Will, yes the old Jedi order never took on relationships/kids etc. but he came after that was all dead. He carved his own Jedi path so it's not out of the question if he had a daughter.
- Call me sappy but I cried a bit when Han Solo died at the hands of his own son and even though I saw it coming a mile away.
- It took me a good while into this movie until it started to "feel" like Star Wars (if that makes any sense, even through it screamed Star Wars from the opening scroll) mid-way through it really picked up though.
- Kylo Ren looks more like Jeff Goldblum's son than Harrison Ford's ;P (my wife made that comment).
- Although it made no bearing on my thoughts on the film, it really did feel a little strange not hearing the 20th Century Fox fanfare before the start. To this day whenever I hear that music, I still associate it with Star Wars, regardless of the film.
- I do love the "grey" force they're using. It's not really Jedi, It's not really Sith, it's more dark and light force without the religious dogma of either side of things.

Going to see it again next Sunday :D

I'm the only person who didn't really enjoy it much?
Imagine Disney made a Star Wars movie that relied entirely on nostalgic value. That's what this movie is.
Absolutely nothing new. It's basically a remake of a new hope.
Villain is just a big lame spoiled brat.
Looked and sounded amazing in imax though.
loser.

Catching imax on Tuesday night, I'll post my thoughts afterwards. I've been lucky to not read any spoilers and I only saw the teaser and first trailer so I know nothing of the plot! Definitely looking forward to it!

(I also didn't read any of these comments)

Man, when Keilo made his entrance and force stopped the laser, I had a nerd gasm and actually yelled out 'owned' in movie theater. Then he went and started to suck. Mediocre would be a complement to his performance the last half an hour of the film (the character not the actor).

I loved it. Will be seeing it again.

Thoughts:

Great intro to the new and sendoff to the old.

I didn't see Han dying until he stepped on the bridge ---then I knew it was coming. Not happy about it but I guess it was a good way for him to go. I think we will get more light shed on the years between rotj and tfa when they do the han solo solo flick unless they choose to do the 12 parsec run as a focus.

Rey I think will be one of two: Lukes daughter - In one of the trailers you hear luke saying "my father had it, my sister had it now you have it" or something like that. He left her on Jakku when he went into seclusion. OR she will be the twin sister of Kylo Ren. All the lore pointed to Han and Lei having twins. Though they did not mention a daughter so who knows. I think I am leaning more toward lukes son.

I thought Chewie didn't get enough time to mourn in this flick. They were partners forever and when he watched Han die he pretty much went "oh well" and got back on the ship and took off.

Snope I don't know if he is a giant or if that's just the hologram. Will be interesting to see. Hopefully he is one of the original Ancient Siths. I guess the theory that Palpatine was a clone that was tossed around for years isn't going to materialize.

I really enjoyed the movie. Still thinking about a bunch of the elements. The one thing I don't like is that some of it seemed too convenient to keep the story moving like Luke's saber in the basement, how did ren get vaders mask? didn't it blow up on the death star when Vader died? These are just a few things that came to mind but I think it is among the best of the franchise. In league with empire strikes back.

I thought his initial reaction was good, going beserk and firing off like crazy at Kylo on the bridge, even clipping him. But yes the end wound down a bit too quickly with only the quick mournful hug with Leia when he returned.

I think there are chances he's Palpatine reborn/cloned/whatever. Thinking ala Voldemort. He did note at the end to whoever it was to grab Kylo's body and bring it to him so he could complete Ren's training. A very Sith/Apprentice gesture. Dunno. Will need to wait and see.

- Ditto on the "convenient" front. Also that Han/Chewie just happened to be in the same general area of the Galaxy to pick up on the Falcon and bring it in.

On the Vader helmet front, if you'll recall when Luke was burning his remains at the end of ROTJ, Vader had his helmet on in the fire.

interesting that a major character dies by lightsaber in the first episode of each trilogy.

i don't like the idea of luke being rey's father. why would luke have abandoned his daughter as a child? why would leia and han not know about luke's kid?

the movie reveals that kylo ren was luke's jedi pupil who turned to the dark side (after being lured away by snoke), thus causing luke to disappear and han/leia to split. presumably this would have happened after kylo ren was no longer a child, and thus rey would not have been a child either.

do we really think that luke would be such an asshole that he would abandon his young daughter, living alone with no income or support on a hostile planet, so that he could sulk in private forever? do we really think that luke would not mention to his sister and best friend, while teaching their son the way of the force, that he had a daughter?

i agree that some family bond is suggested by the fact that luke's lightsabre spoke to her.

some suggest that kylo ren and rey are twins, as evidenced by the design of the movie poster, but this is an equally ridiculous idea as han and leia would certainly know if they had twins.

nothing is by chance. such is the way of the force. all of the conveniences (such as rey and finn just happening to find the millennium falcon as they are under attack) are explained by the force pushing people towards their destiny.

Either of the two theory's (Rey is Luke's daughter or Kylo's twin but sent away in hiding) can be rationalized by them all hedging their bets of keeping Rey "safe" and away from dark side harm.

Should Luke's plan of training up a new set of Jedi all go to shit because they turn to the dark side, they have a backup of someone who has been kept safe and hidden away.

Heh. Everything not explainable can be explained by "it was the will of the force"....

Could actually give credence to Rey being Han and Leia's daughter and Kylo's twin.

Han was actually in that sector of the Galaxy because he's been maintaining close watch (from somewhat of a distance) on his daughter to make sure she's still safe.

Don't you think it could possibly be a similar situation where they were separated at birth (Luke & Leia)? In the 1st Star Wars Luke & Leia kissed, didn't they? Then you find out they're brother & sister in the later movies.

I don't remember anything said at any point in the movie to make us believe that Rey was their only child - or did I miss something?

My point is; if they can spin that incest scene into something that works in the storyline down the road I'm sure they can make Ren & Rey as twins work somehow.

No matter what, I'm not buying that Rey is Luke's daughter.

Re: Rey being Kylo's twin: i can't believe that han solo or leia would abandon their daughter in order to "keep her safe" after defeating the empire and winning the war. they had won the war and they had luke on their side training new jedi. why would they abandon their daughter and keep only their son? what horrible parents they would be! also, why would han and leia both pretend that they didn't know rey when they met her?

Re: Rey being Luke's kid: this is not the same situation as obi-wan hiding luke and leia as infants. at that time, the twins had an evil father (who would take the children if he knew of their existence) and no mother, so obi-wan gave leia to the royal family of alderaan and he gave luke to his uncle owen. i cannot believe that luke skywalker, a jedi, would think the best move would be to abandon his own daughter and leave her with no guardian and no cash, living alone on hostile world, and never check up on her. that would make luke the worst father in the history of star wars, and that's saying a lot.

neither of those theories make sense.

neither of those theories make sense.

Neither theory makes sense out of context....

We know pretty much zero of what happened between ROTJ and TFA. There might have been a new threat that surfaces that is the REASON Luke decides to start training Jedi (out of necessity). And the growing threat could be so great/perilous that it compels him to hide his daughter (the offspring of Skywalker would be the most important target to claim for the enemy).

The point is, we don't know so I don't think the theory could be dismissed outright by saying it would make Luke a "bad father".

And the more I read/think about it, the more I'm convinced on Rey being Luke's daughter.

1. Isn't it curious/convenient that the only person who has 1/2 the map to Luke's whereabouts happens to be living on the same planet as Rey (perhaps also looking after her from a distance).
2. And isn't it curious/convenient that R2-D2, who has the other half of the map remains mysteriously dormant until Rey show's up at the base. Only waking up when she gets there to complete the map on where Luke is and how to get there.....
