Sports Wars!

football is just annoying. basically a bunch of big dumb jocks. no skills required besides catching. a very "manly" (tm) sport, based more on brute force than agility and accuracy.

soccer is somewhat boring, but only because it's so long. some skills required (no hands).

hockey. what to say about hockey? bad hair! LOL nah really though, hockey takes a lot of skill, because it's really really really fast and very physical (especially of late). i have great respect for anyone who can shoot a little rubber disc into a net while trying not to fall down and avoiding getting pummeled by three huge guys at the same time. the thing that annoys me about hockey is the fans...why are you people such morons? like yeah i know you have to get drunk and shit, but tone it down!

basketball. i personally am a huge basketball fan because i believe it is more of a gentleman's sport than any of these....i mean, the fouling system they have is in place to keep players form being too unruly, and it works...shit, you can't even touch a guy's arm without getting a foul call. add to that the accuracy aspect. putting a ball into a cylinder that's only a LITTLE bit larger than the ball about 17 feet away and 10 feet high while some guy is trying to take away the ball and put his hand in your face....and oh yeah, you can't go more than 2 steps without dribbling! now THAT's skill.

those are my opinions, anyway.

i'll probably catch a lot of shit for the football comments, but hey...
:p

ok.

let me rephrase that.

soccer is not LONGER, but it seems more boring because there isn't as much tension, like most of the action happens in the mid field, not at the net.

get me?

Ultimate has all of that. And they encourage you to drink and smoke pot on the field.

I win again.

i always thought that soccer had more tension because the game can turn around so fast. also since the scores are a lot lower, a goal is cause for more celebration.

i find myself anticipating everything when i watch soccer.

[soccer is better than hockey, football, basketball and any other sport you could think of]

[anyone who disagrees with me is not intelligent or civilised enough to appreciate it]

let me help..

for those who can't appreciate soccer, there are others who cant appreciate football. Sure hockey players are tough but football players are equally tough. How about quarterbacks throwing 80 yard passes to a moving object with 2 strong safeties grabbing the receiver while the QB has 5 320 pound defensive ends trying to stop him from completing the pass with hands in the air and...

then you got mike alstott, having the ball handed off and putting his head down and running through the smallest hole which contains 11 of the meanest mofos trying to stop him and...

i havent even told you abot brett favre, john elway, barry sanders, etc etc.

toughness answered

Colligate Wrestling/Grappling

Probably the oldest sport around. One of the top 5 drawing sports in the USA. You want to talk about skill. In any form of grappling the only one to blame if you lose is yourself.
Some people call it gay and stuff. Those are the people that are ignorant and "don't know the power of the darkside":)
Every grapppler I've ever met (I know quite a few) are always good in other sports which would mean that they are athletic!
Extreme balance, confidence, training, technique, strengh, stamina, and a whole list of other is are needed.

Are you kidding me? Is this because you've only watched it on TV and find it boring? (I find watching it on TV an incredibly relaxing experience). Golf requires more mechanical ability than any other sport I can think of (coming from a basketball freak!!)

I've been playing the game for almost 20 years and I still have trouble breaking 90 on a regular basis despite many lessons, hours upon hours upon hours on the driving range and many incredible courses. The challenge to master the clubs in my bag and the course I'm on is enough to keep me going. I acknowledge that golf courses are not exactly environmentally or politically (witness Oka) friendly but stand on the elevated 1st tee at Silver Lakes early on a mid-summer morning and you'll understand where the addiction comes from. I've played with foxes at Don Valley, hiked through dense forest to find my ball at National Pines and been chased by an alligator at Worthington in Bonita Springs. I've played with Whistler as the backdrop at Nicklaus North and walked along the cliffs (but never played) at Pebble Beach.

The ability to hit and maintain control over a small ball as you direct it towards a tiny hole anywhere from 125-600 yards away after negotiating bunkers, rough, water, trees, animals and other golfers, all the while visiting the cart girl to refresh your bevvy every 3 holes (and a spliff at the turn) is an incredible skill, one that should not be taken lightly.

Give the game a try man, it's a great way to spend time with your crew, with your pops and grandpops (or in my case gramma), and you know when you retire you'll be the only one not playing. There are many reasons why so many of us cannot get enough.

exactly. It's all about building up tension for a goal...not ridiculous scores of 24-12...that's the problem with North America, the people want large scores instead of 3-2 (Amercian Football has large scores e.g. 24--12, but isn't that just 3-2 with higher points for each goal)...

Soccer is a beautiful game, the fittest too, and it isn't just 22 people kicking a cows stomach up and down a pitch...you need skill to make it, it separates the great players from the average.

i could ramble on, but i'll quit while i'm ahead.

Vote soccer! (or football-it's REAL term)

opinions aside, how can we ever succesfully argue or at least convince each other of the merits of our fave sports. unless this is merely a means to show what we like/hate about them and why, i for one will never love soccer but i dont think im uncivilized for not liking it b/c i can say the same thing about others who dont like stuff like art, or jazz, or whatever else.

well this isnt a knock or anything but i guess im just BORED at 1:53PM.

Baseball - One of the world's most explosive sports, between explosions though it tends to be quite slow, lots of hand eye, stand still to sprinting foot speed, more and more becoming a game of pitching. Favourite parts - stolen bases and big home runs.

Football - Pure strength sport with each positon requiring strength in different areas. Similar to rugby in it's variety in body types but with more focus on set plays rather than continual motion. The most damaging to the body in that the season is short and they play a game a week but guys still retire early.

Basketball - Again lots of different body types from short to tall but less emphasis on strength. Lots of scoring lots of attempts end to endaction no real neutral zone shots almost every 20 seconds. Fav parts blocks, 3's (the only major sport where you get more points for scoring from frther away), transition points.

Hockey - Fastest game flow by far. I enjoy the physical aspect but could do without the man slaughter, if it's illegal on the street it should be illegal on the ice! Scores similar to that of soccer but way more scoring chances. Lots of ankle and wrist skill and room for both finness and brute strength. My prob with hockey - the players and goalies have gotten soooooooooo good I feel that over 50% of the goals are less about nice moves/designed plays and more about bouncing pcks off skates or guys legs and shit.

Soccer - I've always loved playing soccer and always will. Requires lots of stamina no fatties here please and less about upper body strength and force. These players are sooooooo good the game is boring. Too much mid-field control and because the main control is at the foot level there's too much tripping and sweeping. Like hockey scores ie 2-1 or 3-2 but hockey has like 50 scoring chances where soccer has like 5-10 scoring chances. Love corner kicks, World Cup and youth soccer cause they have less control so it's more enjoyable to watch.

Golf - One of the only sports I can think off where the arena/playing field is not only different everytime but is less regulated in it's size or height or width. Plus they move the pin after every day. Your tee off time effects green conditions not to mention weather. Will argue this till the day I die but I feel it's the world's most difficult hand eye co-ordination sport and really frustrating. Maybe not the best all around athletes on paper (that nod usually goes to nordic skier's) but cardio and strength aren't everything.

Other sports that get my respect. Volleyball for being (at high levels) the most continuosly explosive sport. Aussie Rules and Rugby these guys are insane. Tri-Athletes and Decathletes for not really being the best at anything but at the same time being the best at everything.

This is because Hockey is faster (ice and skates play a large part) and played on a smaller arena....

Hockey also has more fights

A goalie in soccer can kick the ball almost end to end with accuracy plus soccer has more guys more spread out on that "larger surface." Soccer can go back and forth like hockey very quickly but soccer players have more control. Less turnovers in soccer, in hockey there is one every 10 seconds. I guess I was just stating that soccer has less scoring chances which is one reason I find it less enjoyable to watch.
