in retrospect, who would you pick as your most influential "musicians"...i'm still thinking of mine...however the debate rages around nirvana in my mind as i believe they ulitmately have led to the destruction of alternative music in the 90's...influential to me should mean innovative...something that changes the not just the music, but the people who listen & make the music...

your thoughts...

I honestly couldn't agree more.

I think they are missing a few highly influential artists.

But I suppose with only 50 spots you can't name them all.

The Ramones #2? Pink Floyd #49?

I understand this isn't a "best" list but rather a "most influential" ... still...

They name NIN as band of the year 3 years in a row and says that they pushed Industrial music into the spotlight. That list is bullshit anyway.

actually i'm not sure what this list is supposed to represent...it's labelled best, but they also talk about influence which is where i got mixed up when posting the thread...

They also had to clearly influence today's music in undeniable ways. Finally, they had to be bands that spawned a special emotional attachment to their fans

that list looks just about right in my opinion. However I think Elvis should be in there, seeing that he influenced probably everyone of those groups..

I liked Nirvana, but there's no way they should be number 5.
And David Bowie's only at number 36?? There goes the validity of this list. I hate Spin.

if you're only looking at influential bands, that list is pretty accurate

as much as i love the smashing pumpkins, in terms of causing the american grunge revolution, they were no nirvana

The reason why Neil and some other solo artists, et al are not on the list is beacuse it is a list of bands not solo artists, hence Bowie is included with the Spiders From Mars and Iggy Pop is listed with the Stooges, Jimi is listed with the Experience and so on.

As much as I adore Radiohead and some of the other bands, they havent been around long enough to influence and inspire people as much a a band like the Ramones have. The Ramones were ugly, working class dudes from Queens who made a big dent and showed a lot of people three chords played hard and fast could rock crowd. I competely argree that they were more influential than Pink Floyd. There are far more thrashy, garage punk bands than epic, 3 min guitar solo stoner bands

Any of those should of bumped OutKast, sorry I love OutKast and hip-hop.

But they don't deserve to be in this list.

I'd put Big Daddy Kane or Boogie Down Productions over Outkast if you wanna keep the hip-hop..

how can a band that is less than 5 years old be considered 'influential'?

motorhead should be in there! those guys changed the face of metal
