ok, so Greg and Jamie's sets were "ok" - but i guess everyone is just "ok" when compared to speedy J! Got there just as Greg was getting off and Jamie was beginning to play....
As always, a certain adrenaline fills the room when Speedy J hits the laptops. Last night's gig was an absolutely phenomenal display of hard, layered, pounding techno - with enough whispy, whooshy high end frequency sound generation to pull your brain in opposite directions and give your muscle fibres a seizure. Sitting back, I really paid attention to how Speedy J was putting his music together and it was remarkable - some of his clips lasted upwards of 15 minutes - while really heavy basslines marched in, syncopated, broke, and returned to their original cadence. Speedy J is a master at what he does because he listens to how sound frequencies harmonize and break - all night long he was dropping clicks and high hats that fell out of time with the lead bassline and then "caught up" with it again as he crescendo-ed the "movemement" -- when you put this on top of layer upon layer of "beats" you have amazing techno. And that is what last night was. Perhaps one of the greatest displays within the walls of FW - in my opinion (and I've marched many a night within FW!)
You had to experience it to really "hear" what was going on...
If this sounds overly-intellectual, I'll just add that the dancefloor was totally entranced and possessed by every moment of Speedy J's set. My ears are still ringing - for a few moments i went to the front and the air from the speakers was actually rippling my t-shirt! fucked up.
that's my review..........
