table 17 booked for tonight. thanks for the deal link MM!

as far as Lady M, I seriously die for their salmon sandwich, it's so tasty. but I work in the area so can go for brunch/lunch on weekdays when it's not so busy. I'm spoiled and go at least once a week

How about Eddie Levesques?

And @vise which places take reservations for brunch? I would think far and few..

We used to go to Edward Levesque's years ago when it was one of just a few places in the area... haven't been back in ages though, never really found the food all that special and had a few meals that were meh.

As for brunch places taking reservations, check Open Table... from memory Origin, Globe Bistro, Splendido, Cafe Belong, Lai Wah Heen (dim sum), One, Cafe Boulud, etc. More then you would think actually.

Oh yeah, Splendido wins hands down for brunch in Toronto too. If you haven't been go asap.

I haven't heard one good review of Lai Wah Heen from a Chinese person yet. I'd be curious.

That is surprising. It is always full of Chinese families when we go... IMO best dim sum in the city but certainly not cheap. In fact it is rather expensive but somewhat understandable given the ingredients/preparations.

Yeah, a lot of HK families I assume go for the status. I've heard from a few people that the dinner is just standard Chinese fare with very little variation. And the specialty items with all the extra stuff like truffles and luxury ingredients taste off from the original. I guess it's really challenging to please purists when we have some of the best tasting Chinese food in the world in Markham and Scarborough.

My friend went for the fixed price and told me the whole time he just wanted regular dirty dim sum.

A friend just went to a wedding banquet there this week and was texting me complaining the food was mediocre. No shark fin soup, very blase dishes with questionable portions and the chicken was steamed! That's like serving ketchup on prime rib at a wedding. Traditionally, it's supposed to be crispy paper skin chicken. Steamed chicken is passable if you're not in the know but it's sometimes used for funeral meals. So if they had auspicious people there, it would be frowned upon. Also for a high end place, paper chicken should've been the #1 choice. It's a strange thing to offer. It's kinda like offering chicken wings to wedding guests at a Caucasian wedding.

I know a Triber who went there for a birthday dinner and said it was just kinda average Chinese dishes for double the price. It makes me wanna go so bad so I can see it for myself. I bet it can spectacular if one can be a discerning about the menu choices.

Yeah that is probably part of it, when we've gone we've ordered the expensive dim sum stuff and it has generally been excellent. I'm not much for price fix type menus in general though... probably explains my dislike of the 'licious events but whatever. The dungeness crab dumpling, foie gras/pork tart, and deep fried oysters were particularly memorable. We've had the peking duck there too and it was damn tasty.

^I'm still sad Sushi District was born only because the old Chinese couple finally decided to retire Woodgreen Fish & Chips after 35+ years in the business. Both Reliable and B&B Fish & Chips in Leslieville just don't cut it for me. :(

Explains why no one was in there last night as I walked by but Tabule was rammed... I ate there once (Sushi District) hope I'm ok...

We've eaten at District a few times, it is ok... bit better than the cheap Korean run sushi places on the Danforth but also more expensive. I'm sure they will be back open soon.

I'd love to see them close down and reopen as an Izakaya though...

Ooooooooh competition with Tropical Joe's. Unfortunately Tropical Joe's is cheaper and PERFECT jerk chicken and roti.
Poor Playpen. Hehe.

Both Reliable and B&B Fish & Chips, agree, so over-hyped, could be so much better. Not to mention that lady at B&B is a real piece of work. Not in a bad way if you have some patience, just funny! She almost yells your order at you in such quick succession. YOU WANT ONE FISH AND CHIP ONE SHRIMP AND CHIP! SALT PEPPA?
