So what's so good about Leslieville?

And my steak at Ruth's was $45 so not sure why that's overpriced compared to Jacob's. $200 for a kobe steak (not even real kobe) at Harbour 360) is ridiculous. I can HIRE a pro chef friend to grill 10 steaks for that price.

Jacobs is slightly more expensive than Ruth's Chris, the USDA ribeye is around $55 or so I believe. It's actually slight less expensive than Harbour 60 which is not entirely surprising. Keep in mind that's for the steak alone with no sides.

Jacob's also has real A5 wagyu (ie. kobe) from Japan as does Harbour 60 from time to time... at Jacob's they list the prefecture in Japan on the menu. The price is what it is, wagyu is a very low volume breed and expensive to produce. True kobe from Japan is even more expensive as to be expected. Cumbrae's has been crossing wagyu cattle with red angus the past couple years and it is a fantastic product at a much lower price point (retail for around $50/lb so still expensive).

Why do you say that the kobe at Harbour 60 isn't real? I've been there when they've had A5 kobe from Japan as well as US or Australian raised wagyu. $200 may be ridiculous to you but its not for everyone...

although I won't open this can of worms about USDA grade beef vs. cooking vs. point of purchase blah blah blah, i'll say this...

Cumbrae's mark up for their heritage-hybrid livestock (misnomer, I know) is just plain stupid. reminds me of Olliffe... people claim to know fuck tons about beef and pork yet are willing to drop, and like straight up drop without blinking, comically exorbitant prices for shit they can travel a third of the way cross town for and get from another, well known, blue chip butcher.

if i'm paying that much for a fucking steak (BONE IN I might add) stevie alexander better come to my goddamn house and fucking cook it for me!

teh fuck.

We should stop this thread jacking and take it to the steak thread. :D

Let me preface my responses by saying to each their own...

That really doesn't look that good to me. There is no crust on that steak and is covered in some strange green nonsense. I'm sure it tasted good but that isn't what I'd look for in a special steak experience.

For reference this the ribeye from Jacobs (not my pic), note the ridiculous dark brown crust. A good steakhouse will cook at crazy high temps to sear/crust the outside leaving the inside rare to medium rare. The closest you can get to at home is on a charcoal bbq with a shit ton of charcoal ripping as hot as it gets.

Yeah, that looks okay. Different strokes for sure. I don't really love cuts that have that divide in them. Like a lamb shoulder is great until there's that space between with the membrane. I did like my filet for sure. It was $63 (no sides) but it was still good. Not $63 good is all I'm sayin'. I think in a restaurant, I'd pay a max of $35 or so which includes sides.

Charcoal is definitely my preference now. Great grilling. I'm not sure why I ever left it behind. We only did charcoal growing up. I sometimes compare steak to wine. There are great $12 bottles and $1200 bottles. It's a matter of taste, price point, access... Even mood. Maybe I don't like steak enough to have a real professional opinion.

To each their own, I think tenderloin is boring... texturally it is nice I guess but not enough beefyness for me. Ribeye is king IMO.

Totally accurate as far as the general use of `kobe`at shitty restaurants... since it is not enforceable plenty of places claiming to have 'kobe' hamburgers etc etc. Different story at a legit steakhouse that is listing the breed, grade, and prefecture of their beef from Japan. Plus charging $20+ per ounce.

Personally its a bit much, I've had wagyu/kobe a number of times but the thought of eating a 12oz+ wagyu steak seems a bit crazy... its like eating meat flavoured butter, best reserved for a small portion/serving. I mean I love foie gras but I'm not going to eat an entire lobe in one sitting... as much as the idea excites me.

So...

Anyone been to Gelato Pizza yet?

Not yet, heard mixed reviews so far. I did try Liberty Shawarma though and it was solid, definitely the best shawarma option in the area. Perhaps the only shawarma option mind you.

We also had a very nice meal at Bero on Friday night... will be interesting to see how they do as it is quite different than anything else in the area. It was busy but not packed, only day 2 mind you. The menu is 4 courses for $52 or 6 courses for $68. We had the 6 course + wine pairing, can't recall every dish at the moment but the bone marrow gnocchi was ridiculously amazingly tasty. Bass ceviche, halibut, and lamb courses were also very good. Desserts were also beautifully plated and quite interesting/different... ie. my chocolate dessert with yogurt/eggplant ice cream.

Since almost every other spot in the area is casual with midrange price points will be interested to see if they take off. We would go back for sure though.

Does anyone know why it's 7:30 AM and fire trucks have been whizzing down the streets for a while now? I also see helicopters and smoke wafting down Greenwood. What is going on?

I was curious what was going on when I left for work, I hear the helicopter buzzing around.

Forget about the Tulip for two seconds and try out their new neighbor 2 doors to the east on 1610 Queen Street East for great Caribbean food. I'm plugging this new West Indian restaurant that opened up last month because they have delicious jerk pork. Other than the Mr.Jerk franchises there are not that many places that actually serve jerk pork. Most Caribbean food joints serve everything else, but jerk pork. It is my second favorite dish after mouthwatering oxtail at these Irie restaurants.

BTW, after months of waiting I only noticed today the Subway sandwich shop has finally opened on Carlaw just south of Dundas. It is right across the street from the Lolabar.

Went yesterday. It was just okay. The jerk pork was super fatty but the meaty pieces were pretty good. Like the jerk rub they use. I think they're a bit chintz on serving sizes though. Will definitely go back to try their made to order red snapper dinner. Tropical Joe's still holds the east end caribbean belt for me though.

Have you noticed the food is a little different at Tropical Joe's? I always get the goat roti and it was piddly and overly salty. The meat was poached and curled with some curdling happening with the fat like when you boil beef. And the prices went up! I was kinda not pleased!

Has anyone tried the place at Queen and Greenwood? It seems really pricey!

Also, a lot of those places on the Danforth east of Main are great. A more Trini style roti and eats. And cheap. Totally also love the place at Donlands, next to the 7-11. Had it twice and though they don't give you even a smile, the food is pretty good.

The jerk pork at Mr. Jerk in the Peanut Plaza is delish and his home made hot sauce that you can buy..

As I mentioned other than Mr. Jerk franchises, consider yourself pretty lucky when you can find a Caribbean restaurant that actually serves jerk pork.

Pretty sure the Peanut Plaza Mr.Jerk franchise located around Don mills/Sheppard area is nowhere near Leslieville. :p

I get donuts for the office once in a blue moon. In a year there'll be 20 different gourmet donut shops.

Still love my Chick'n Joy for fried chicken.
