what years was that taking place?
The 90s are in revival right now, so if it was from then it may just happen. But it will never happen if you dont sign.

M'eh. They are a corporation. Ain't no petition gonna win over a corporation with dolla dolla bills...especially when you add a sprinkle of political backroom dealings.

That's a terribly defeatist attitude to have. Of course a petition showcasing the sentiments of the local residents will make a difference to the OMB review board. I understand what you're saying, but this ain't Turkey.. if enough people speak up, it will be much more difficult for Riocan to get the area re-zoned. I think this is one petition that everyone (who cares and agrees) should sign.

This is not even in Kensington Market.

It is right around the corner if you know the neighbourhood; and certainly close enough to do damage. I've been involved in several discussions about this on facebeurk.

I've seen what the Dufferin Mall (of which Walmart is the anchor) did to the area, which has just started to recover in the last couple of years.

And Walmart are particularly evil, being one of the holdouts (along with the Gap) on signing that agreement to ensure workers' standards are improved in Bangladesh.

If they could make a smaller version, less invasive one, perhaps, though I still don't like them. But they don't do that. They always go BIG and maximize shareholder profit: damn anything else.

So I say: damn them.

Leslieville/Beach rejected a big box megalocomplex a few years ago. It even went to the OMB which is no enemy of big corporations and they still lost.

I think you'll eventually see Kensington lose the war of attrition. Starbucks will be in at Baldwin and Augusta before you know it.

We dont even need a walmart there, its just a stupid place for one given how close The one at dufferin mall is and easy to get to. They should build down by front, lakeshore, skydome. That areas been ruined by condos anyway so walmart wont matter. They cud stick it on top of that loblaws thats down there somewhere.

I agree with this. Way too close to Dufferin Mall. It's really not needed on Bathurst, and can think of many other areas that could benefit from a Walmart without creating a huge negative impact....if that's even possible.

How is this going to impact Kensington businesses? Everybody seems to get up in arms whenever you hear the term "big box store."
There's a huge, new Loblaws on Queen Street (which also was met with mild protest) and I don't see Kensington businesses closing up shop? Kensington Market provides a niche vibrant marketplace that can't be touched by a Walmart unless it starts stocking Empanadas and second hand clothing. :p

would residents ( and store owners ) of Kensington be up in arms if people carrying Walmart bags shopped in the local stores too ? because that's exactly what will happen.
such a bad thing ?

You say defeatist, I'd call it realist. Potayto, Potahto.

And frankly, they wouldn't be trying to put one in if there wasn't some demand for it.
